United Airlines Flight UA925 diverted to Dublin on November 19, 2025, after a passenger’s laptop became trapped in an inaccessible area around a business-class seat on a Boeing 767 flying from London Heathrow to Washington Dulles. The aircraft landed safely, and maintenance personnel reportedly retrieved and inspected the device. No fire or injury was reported; the diversion was a precaution because the battery’s condition and location could not be confirmed.
What happened on United Flight UA925
UA925 was scheduled to fly from London Heathrow (LHR) to Washington Dulles (IAD). During the flight, a passenger’s laptop slipped into a gap around a business-class seat and could not be retrieved from the cabin. The Boeing 767 diverted to Dublin Airport (DUB), where it landed safely. Reports say maintenance personnel recovered and inspected the laptop and nearby seat structure (FlyMag’s incident report).
That account does not describe an inflight fire, explosion, injury, or aircraft damage. Nor does the available reporting establish the exact seat, whether the laptop was powered on, or what happened to passengers and the aircraft after the inspection. The incident details are based primarily on media reporting; no specific public United or FAA statement confirming every operational detail was identified.
Why divert over a lost laptop?
A laptop contains a lithium-ion battery. If damaged, overheated, short-circuited, or defective, such a battery can heat rapidly and enter thermal runaway, a self-sustaining failure that can produce intense heat, smoke, and fire. That possibility does not mean UA925’s laptop was overheating. The reported concern was that it was inaccessible and its condition could not be checked.

A visible device in the cabin is easier for crew to assess and manage: they can respond to smoke or heat, move it away from nearby materials when safe, cool it under their procedures, and monitor it. If a device is lodged behind a seat or panel, crew may not be able to see it, reach it, cool it, or place it in a containment bag. Operating or adjusting a seat to retrieve it could also press on or damage the device. The specific response depends on the aircraft and crew procedures.
On a long transatlantic flight, carrying an unresolved battery hazard in an inaccessible space presents a different response problem from handling a device in the open cabin. Diverting to a suitable airport with maintenance and emergency resources is a conservative risk-management decision. It is not evidence that a fire had started, and the available reporting does not show that FAA rules required a diversion in this particular case.

The FAA advises passengers to tell crew promptly if a battery-powered device becomes hot, swollen, smoky, or catches fire. Its general guidance on lithium batteries and portable electronic devices explains the hazard and response context, but it does not establish that UA925’s laptop showed any of those warning signs.

Some reports about similar seat incidents use “cargo hold” to describe where a device went. For UA925, the more careful description is that the laptop disappeared into an inaccessible gap or void around the business-class seat or adjacent structure. The precise location has not been documented in the available reporting.

An aircraft’s main cargo compartment is not interchangeable with every hidden space behind or below a cabin seat. Without aircraft-specific maintenance information, it would be inaccurate to state as fact that this laptop reached the main cargo hold—or that it was outside a particular fire-suppression system. - October 15, 2025 — Washington Dulles to Rome: United Flight UA126 reportedly returned to Dulles after a laptop fell behind a cabin wall panel into an inaccessible area. Coverage said the crew was concerned about the lithium battery and the difficulty of responding if it caught fire. - November 19, 2025 — London to Washington: UA925 diverted to Dublin after another laptop became inaccessible around a business-class seat.
Reports published in January 2026 describe additional United 767 laptop incidents, which occurred after UA925. They should not be counted as part of the November event. Examples include Flying Insight and Aviation A2Z. The reports establish a pattern of comparable incidents, but by themselves do not prove a confirmed aircraft defect or a fleet-wide design change.

What passengers should do if a device slips into a seat gap
- Tell a flight attendant immediately. Explain where the device went and whether it is hot, damaged, or showing any other warning signs.
- Do not adjust the seat to retrieve it. Avoid reclining or electrically moving a seat around a trapped device; pressure or movement could damage it. Follow the crew’s instructions.
- Do not reach into the mechanism or fish with an object. Trying to recover a device yourself can injure you or make the situation harder to assess.
- Report heat, swelling, smoke, an unusual odor, or flames at once. Move away if instructed and let the crew manage the response.
- Leave recovery decisions to trained crew and maintenance staff. A device that is out of sight may require access to the seat or panels on the ground.
Keeping a laptop or phone secured while seated can reduce the chance of a drop, but a device’s compliance with carriage rules does not make it harmless if crushed or damaged. FAA watt-hour limits—generally up to 100 Wh without special airline approval, with some 101–160 Wh batteries permitted with approval—are transportation rules, not a guarantee against damage-related failure. What remains uncertain
Public reporting does not establish UA925’s exact seat number, aircraft registration or 767 variant, the laptop’s power state, or whether it entered the main cargo compartment rather than another inaccessible structural space. It also does not reliably confirm the precise delay, passenger reaccommodation, or any subsequent United hardware or procedure changes. Those details should not be inferred from coverage of other flights.
