The ASUS ROG Strix Z890-F Gaming WiFi is an ATX Intel Z890 motherboard for LGA1851 Core Ultra Series 2 processors. Its retail package includes the board, Wi-Fi 7 antenna, SATA cables, M.2 hardware, a thermal pad, cable ties, stickers, documentation, and a few ROG extras. At an official US listed price of $429.99 when checked on August 18, 2026, it is aimed at builders who will use its five M.2 slots, Thunderbolt 4, Wi-Fi 7, extensive USB connectivity, and installation-friendly features—not buyers building a basic single-drive gaming PC.
This is a visual and practical unboxing guide, not a benchmark review. ASUS’s advertised specifications do not replace independent testing of temperatures, power consumption, memory stability, or performance.
What exactly is being unboxed?
The full product name is ASUS ROG Strix Z890-F Gaming WiFi. The “F” model belongs to ASUS’s ROG Strix family and should not be confused with the ROG Strix Z890-E, Z890-A, Z890-H, or other ASUS Z890 boards.

Box presentation and first inspection
The board arrives in the dark ROG Strix packaging used for ASUS’s enthusiast-oriented hardware. Before opening the box, check the model label carefully: it should identify the ROG Strix Z890-F Gaming WiFi, not a similar Z890 variant or a bundled listing with different contents.
Inside, the motherboard should be protected by an antistatic bag and cushioning. Handle the board by its edges and avoid touching the LGA1851 socket contacts, exposed connector contacts, or small surface-mounted components.
Before installing anything, inspect:
- The PCB edges and corners for cracks, dents, or impact damage.
- The LGA1851 socket cover and contact area.
- The DIMM slots, PCIe slots, and rear-I/O ports.
- The M.2 heatsinks, captive screws, latches, and rubber supports.
- The integrated rear-I/O shield and its port openings.
- The Q-LED indicators and onboard Start, BIOS FlashBack, and Clear CMOS controls.
Do not remove the CPU socket protective cover until you are ready to install the processor. LGA socket contacts are delicate. If you find visible socket damage, document it before proceeding and follow ASUS’s current warranty guidance rather than attempting to straighten contacts yourself.

Small items such as the M.2 rubber packages, thermal pad, cable ties, and Q-Latch parts can be tucked beneath cardboard inserts or inside a separate accessory compartment. Compare your box against the official ASUS accessory list before discarding the packaging.
The “additional cooling kit” is not a CPU cooler. You still need an LGA1851-compatible processor cooler.
What the motherboard looks and feels like
The board uses a dark ROG Strix design with a large VRM heatsink assembly, an integrated rear-I/O cover, broad M.2 heatsink coverage, and a reinforced primary PCIe slot. ASUS also includes Polymo lighting on the I/O cover for configurable visual effects.

The pre-mounted I/O shield is useful during installation because there is no separate shield to fit into the case. The reinforced primary PCIe slot is intended for the main graphics card, while the onboard labels and diagnostic lights make troubleshooting easier when the system does not start normally.
Slots, storage, and connectivity
CPU and memory
The LGA1851 socket is designed for Intel Core Ultra Series 2 desktop processors on the Z890 platform. Check ASUS’s current CPU support list and BIOS information for the processor and firmware combination you plan to use.
There are four DDR5 DIMM slots in a dual-channel layout. ASUS lists support for up to 192GB and advertised overclocked memory support up to 9066+ MT/s. That is an overclocked rating, not a guaranteed plug-and-play speed. Actual results depend on the CPU’s memory controller, the memory kit, BIOS version, DIMM population, and whether the kit uses conventional UDIMMs or CUDIMMs.

For a first build, a matched two-DIMM kit is generally the less demanding configuration. If four-DIMM operation or a high-capacity kit fails memory training, begin at default settings, update the BIOS, and change one setting at a time.
PCIe expansion
- One CPU-connected PCIe 5.0 x16 slot for the primary graphics card.
- One chipset-connected PCIe 4.0 x16 physical slot operating at x4.
The second physical x16 slot is not a second full-bandwidth x16 graphics slot. It can be useful for selected expansion cards, but buyers should not interpret its physical length as equivalent electrical bandwidth.
ASUS’s PCIe Slot Q-Release Slim mechanism assists with graphics-card removal, which is particularly useful when a large GPU covers the normal slot-release latch.
M.2 and SATA storage
The board provides five M.2 positions, including one PCIe 5.0 x4 slot and additional PCIe 4.0 connections. One M.2 position supports PCIe 4.0 x4 and SATA operation. There are also four SATA 6Gb/s ports.
That raw slot count is attractive for a workstation, creator system, or enthusiast build, but check the motherboard manual’s lane-sharing table before installing several drives. Depending on the selected M.2 position and drive type, installing a device can affect SATA availability or other board connections.

During installation, check that:
- The SSD length matches the selected M.2 position.
- The correct M.2 Q-Latch or rubber support is installed.
- Protective film is removed from the relevant thermal-pad surface.
- The heatsink sits flat over the drive.
- Heatsink screws are snug rather than over-tightened.
Networking
Networking includes Intel Wi-Fi 7, the included ASUS Wi-Fi Q-Antenna, and Intel 2.5Gb Ethernet. Wi-Fi 7’s practical benefit depends on a compatible router, client devices, supported spectrum, operating-system and driver support, antenna placement, and regional 6GHz rules.
ASUS compares Wi-Fi 7 with earlier standards under specified conditions, but advertised comparisons should not be treated as guaranteed real-world throughput. With a Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 router, the board can still connect wirelessly, but it will not deliver Wi-Fi 7-class results.
USB, display, and audio
ASUS lists two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, USB 10Gbps Type-A and Type-C ports, a designated rear USB-C port with up to 30W power delivery, and front-panel USB 20Gbps Type-C connectivity. The rear I/O also includes DisplayPort, HDMI, optical S/PDIF, and other audio and USB connections.
The motherboard video outputs require a processor and configuration capable of providing integrated graphics output. They are not substitutes for a discrete graphics card in a typical gaming build.
Audio is built around ASUS’s ROG SupremeFX implementation with a Realtek ALC4080 codec and Savitech SV3H712 amplifier. ASUS states 120dB stereo playback SNR and 110dB recording-input SNR, along with Dolby Atmos support. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent audio measurements.
Installation-friendly features
- Pre-mounted I/O shield: Simplifies case installation.
- Q-Antenna: Provides a snap-on connection for the Wi-Fi antenna instead of conventional screw connectors.
- M.2 Q-Latch and Q-Slide: Reduce the need for tiny M.2 screws and help accommodate different drive lengths.
- PCIe Slot Q-Release Slim: Helps release a graphics card from the primary slot.
- Onboard Start button: Allows basic power-on testing outside or inside a case.
- Q-LED indicators: Show which major component is preventing a successful start.
- Clear CMOS: Provides a convenient way to reset firmware settings after a failed configuration.
- BIOS FlashBack: ASUS describes the feature as allowing a BIOS update from a FAT32 USB drive without the CPU or memory installed.
- BIOS Q-Dashboard: Helps visualize board connections and settings within the firmware environment.
For BIOS FlashBack, use the current manual rather than a generic motherboard tutorial. Confirm the required USB filesystem, file-renaming requirement, correct USB port, button location, LED behavior, and completion signal before starting the process. Do not power off while the update is in progress.
What you need to complete the build
- Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processor for LGA1851.
- DDR5 desktop memory, preferably a matched kit checked against ASUS’s current QVL for high-speed configurations.
- An LGA1851-compatible CPU cooler.
- An ATX-compatible case with sufficient clearance for the board, graphics card, and M.2 heatsinks.
- A power supply with the connectors and capacity required by the selected CPU and graphics card.
- A graphics card unless your intended workload can use integrated graphics.
- NVMe or SATA storage.
- A Wi-Fi 7 router if you want to use Wi-Fi 7’s full potential.
- A FAT32 USB flash drive if BIOS FlashBack may be required.
This is not a drop-in upgrade for an older Intel system. Moving to Z890 and LGA1851 generally means buying a new motherboard, processor, and DDR5 memory, with cooler compatibility and operating-system requirements also worth checking.

Important caveats before installation
Memory speed is not guaranteed
The advertised 9066+ MT/s figure is an overclocked support claim. High-speed DDR5 becomes more difficult with four DIMMs, high-capacity modules, certain CUDIMM configurations, older BIOS revisions, or a weaker individual CPU memory controller. If the first boot takes longer while the board trains memory, allow the process to complete before assuming the hardware has failed.

Five M.2 slots do not mean five independent connections
Check the manual’s storage and lane-sharing table before planning a five-drive array. The number of physical sockets is only part of the storage story; the connected chipset lanes and any disabled SATA or expansion connections matter too.
Thunderbolt 4 and USB-C power delivery are specific features
Two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a designated rear USB-C port with up to 30W power delivery can be valuable for compatible docks, displays, storage, and peripherals. The 30W figure applies to the specified port, not every USB connector on the board. Verify the exact port and device requirements before assuming a particular accessory will work.
BIOS and operating-system support can change
BIOS revisions and processor support notes are not permanent. ASUS’s support pages may show different Windows requirements for newer Core Ultra processor variants, so check the current notes for your exact CPU before installation.
Marketplace listings need scrutiny
Third-party listings can vary by seller, price, condition, warranty, and whether a CPU or other component is bundled. Treat marketplace pricing as a purchase option rather than a stable MSRP. Check seller identity, return terms, warranty coverage, and whether the board is new or used.
Is the ASUS ROG Strix Z890-F worth roughly $430?
ASUS’s US store showed a listed price of $429.99 during the August 18, 2026 check. That price places the board in the premium Z890 segment, although current discounts and regional pricing may differ.

The board makes the most sense when its connectivity is part of the plan: multiple NVMe drives, Thunderbolt 4 peripherals, Wi-Fi 7, high-speed DDR5 experimentation, extensive USB, and convenient troubleshooting controls. If your build needs only one graphics card, one or two drives, wired networking, and ordinary DDR5, the premium may be difficult to justify.
Final verdict
The ROG Strix Z890-F Gaming WiFi is a feature-rich ATX foundation for an Intel Core Ultra Series 2 system. The box provides a complete set of practical small parts—two SATA cables, Wi-Fi antenna, M.2 hardware, thermal material, cable ties, and documentation—rather than just the motherboard and a generic cable bundle.
Its strongest reasons to buy are the five M.2 slots, Wi-Fi 7, 2.5Gb Ethernet, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, high-speed DDR5 support, reinforced primary PCIe slot, and helpful Q-Design installation and recovery features. Its main weakness is value: many builders will never use enough of those features to justify a roughly $430 motherboard. Buy it for the specific storage and I/O capabilities you need, not simply because it carries the ROG branding.
