The ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero is a premium ATX motherboard for AMD’s AM5 platform. ASUS lists support for Ryzen 9000-, 8000-, and 7000-series desktop processors, DDR5 memory, three PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots, two PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, Wi-Fi 7, 5Gb Ethernet, USB4, and extensive installation aids.
This article covers the standard ROG Crosshair X870E Hero—not the connector-hidden Hero BTF, the Dark Hero, the Glacial, or the older X670E model. The important unboxing takeaway is that ASUS supplies a notably complete motherboard accessory bundle, but the board’s PCIe and M.2 lane-sharing rules deserve planning before you buy.
Price and positioning
ASUS’s US listing showed the ROG Crosshair X870E Hero at $569.99, with $599.99 also shown as a comparison price, in a store snapshot dated August 16, 2026. Retail pricing changes, so treat those figures as a dated indication rather than a permanent MSRP.

It makes sense for a high-end Ryzen build that needs several M.2 drives, USB4, fast wired and wireless networking, robust power delivery, and onboard troubleshooting features. For a conventional gaming PC with one graphics card and one or two SSDs, a less expensive X870, X870E, or B850 board may deliver similar gaming performance and leave more money for the GPU.

The Hero arrives in ASUS’s black-and-gray ROG presentation, with prominent Crosshair branding. The motherboard and its accessories are packaged separately rather than being presented as one loose collection of parts. Check that the board is protected in its motherboard packaging and that the smaller accessory compartment contains the antenna, cables, M.2 hardware, USB drive, guide, and ROG extras.
Outside the packaging, the board’s defining visual elements are its dark heatsink layout, integrated rear I/O shield, substantial VRM cooling assembly, covered M.2 area, and Polymo Lighting II display zone. These are product-design observations, not a claim that the board’s appearance or heatsink material guarantees better performance.

The lower lighting area may be partly hidden once a large graphics card occupies the primary PCIe slot. If lighting visibility matters to your build, plan around the installed GPU rather than judging the bare board alone.
Motherboard tour
AM5 socket, VRM, and power
The board uses AMD’s AM5 socket and four DDR5 DIMM slots in a dual-channel configuration. ASUS presents an 18+2+2 power-stage design: 18 stages rated at 110A, two additional 110A stages, and two rated at 80A, along with dual ProCool II CPU power connectors.
Those ratings indicate electrical headroom for powerful processors and enthusiast tuning. They do not automatically increase gaming performance; cooling, firmware, CPU power limits, and the processor itself remain decisive.
Expansion slots and Q-Release Slim
With supported Ryzen 9000- and 7000-series processors, ASUS specifies two PCIe 5.0 x16 slots capable of operating as x16 or x8/x8. The second slot is not an unrestricted second x16 link in every configuration. Processor choice and M.2 population can alter the available lanes.
Q-Release Slim is a practical feature for large graphics cards: it helps release the card from the primary slot without requiring the usual difficult reach to the retention latch. Test the release mechanism carefully during installation and avoid forcing the graphics card upward.

Five M.2 slots
There are five onboard M.2 2280 slots: three PCIe 5.0 x4 slots and two PCIe 4.0 x4 slots. M.2 covers, Q-Latch parts, Q-Slide hardware, and rubber support pieces are included.

PCIe 4.0 drives are usually the more practical value choice unless your workload benefits from the higher sustained sequential throughput available from a Gen5 drive.
Rear I/O and networking
The integrated rear I/O shield includes two USB4 ports, high-speed USB Type-C connectivity, numerous additional USB connections, BIOS FlashBack and Clear CMOS controls, 5Gb Ethernet, and Wi-Fi 7 connectivity. The included Q-Antenna is part of the wireless setup, not an optional decoration.
Wi-Fi 7 performance depends on the router, client device, channel width, operating system, region, and local interference. USB4 behavior likewise depends on the connected device, cable, display or storage protocol, and software support; do not assume every USB-C device will use the same capabilities.
The lane-sharing issue to understand before installation
The Hero’s headline slot count needs to be read together with ASUS’s lane-allocation notes. Using both primary PCIe slots can change them to an x8/x8 arrangement. Populating particular M.2 slots—especially the slots identified in ASUS’s documentation as M.2_2 and M.2_3—can affect the second PCIe slot or available lane widths.

For the exact slot-to-lane behavior, use the current ASUS technical specifications and the latest manual. This is more reliable than treating the board’s “two PCIe 5.0 x16” headline as two permanently independent full-bandwidth links.
Installation conveniences worth using
- M.2 Q-Latch: secures compatible SSDs without a conventional tiny screw.
- M.2 Q-Slide: provides the board’s supported sliding installation hardware for M.2 configurations.
- Q-Connector: makes power-switch, reset, and indicator wiring easier to organize.
- BIOS FlashBack: can update firmware under supported conditions without first booting into an operating system. Follow ASUS’s current file-naming and USB instructions exactly.
- Integrated I/O shield: removes one common installation step and reduces the chance of forgetting the rear shield.
- Diagnostic display and status indicators: help identify where startup has stopped, but the exact indicators and labels should be checked against the manual for your board revision.
ASUS’s support page lists newer English documentation dated June 22, 2026. Use that current documentation rather than assuming an older launch-era guide contains the final connector labels or FlashBack procedure.
What is not included?
This is a motherboard bundle, not a complete PC. The package does not list a CPU, CPU cooler or AM5 mounting hardware, DDR5 memory, graphics card, M.2 SSD, SATA drive, expansion card, power supply, case, Windows license, separate Thunderbolt add-in card, or external USB hub.
You still need to confirm that your cooler includes AM5 hardware, that your case supports an ATX motherboard, and that your power supply has the required motherboard and CPU power connectors. The included USB drive contains utilities and drivers; it does not replace an operating-system installer or license.
Compatibility checks before you build
- Processor: Check ASUS’s current CPU support list. Compatibility can depend on BIOS version and the exact processor model.
- Memory: Use DDR5 and consult ASUS’s current memory QVL as guidance. Four-DIMM and high-speed configurations can require more tuning or lower settings.
- Storage: Plan M.2 placement around lane sharing, not just heatsink convenience.
- Graphics and expansion: Check x8/x8 behavior, GPU thickness, lower-slot clearance, and the effect of capture or networking cards.
- Cooler and case: Verify ATX support, CPU cooler height, top radiator and fan clearance, VRM-heatsink clearance, and room for the two CPU power cables. Do not rely on an unmeasured generic clearance claim.
- Wireless: Attach the included antenna and confirm that your router and client devices support the Wi-Fi features you intend to use.
- Firmware: Record the factory BIOS version before updating. If a new CPU is not supported by that firmware, use the current ASUS BIOS and FlashBack instructions.
First-boot checklist
- Compare the board model and revision with the box and manual; make sure it is the standard Hero, not Hero BTF.
- Inspect the AM5 socket, PCIe slots, M.2 sockets, and rear I/O for shipping damage.
- Install the CPU, cooler, DDR5 modules, GPU, and storage according to the manual.
- Connect the 24-pin motherboard cable and the CPU power connectors required by your build.
- Attach the Wi-Fi antenna if using wireless networking.
- Power on and note the diagnostic display or status indicators.
- Enter UEFI/BIOS and verify CPU, memory capacity, memory slots, and each installed M.2 drive.
- Test Ethernet, Wi-Fi, USB4, and the rear USB ports with suitable devices.
- Check the current CPU support list and BIOS downloads at ASUS before applying firmware.
- Install current chipset, networking, audio, and other drivers from ASUS support.
Common problems and fixes
Missing accessory
Compare the box with the official manual’s package-contents list before discarding packaging. If an item is absent, photograph the contents and contact the retailer or ASUS rather than substituting an unrelated part.

No POST
Recheck CPU support, BIOS version, memory seating, the 24-pin connection, both CPU power connections where applicable, and the diagnostic indicator. A newly released CPU is not guaranteed to boot on every factory BIOS.
An M.2 drive is not detected
Confirm that the drive is fully seated, the Q-Latch or Q-Slide hardware is correctly installed, the thermal pad is positioned properly, and the chosen slot is not affected by the current PCIe lane configuration.
The second expansion card behaves unexpectedly
Review the manual’s lane-sharing table with every M.2 slot populated. The issue may be expected x8/x8 operation or a slot being disabled by the selected storage arrangement.

Weak Wi-Fi performance
Attach the supplied antenna, update the wireless driver, and check router and client compatibility, channel conditions, and distance. The motherboard alone cannot guarantee a particular wireless speed.
BIOS FlashBack fails
Use ASUS’s current support-page instructions, the correct BIOS file, the specified USB format and port, and the exact file-naming procedure. Do not improvise from an older guide.
Should you buy the standard Hero?
Buy it when you will use its high-end connectivity, multiple M.2 options, 5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7, USB4, diagnostic tools, and enthusiast-oriented power and firmware features. The accessory bundle is complete for a premium motherboard package, with practical inclusions such as the antenna, SATA cables, Q-Connector, M.2 hardware, and driver USB drive alongside the ROG novelty items.
Skip it when your build is a typical single-GPU gaming system and the premium features will sit unused. A cheaper board may provide comparable gaming performance, while the saved money could materially improve the graphics card, processor, memory, or storage. Also reconsider it if your build needs several PCIe cards and many Gen5 SSDs but you do not want to plan around lane sharing.

The newer Crosshair X870E Dark Hero costs more and targets buyers who specifically need its additional enthusiast features. The Hero BTF is not simply a cosmetic alternative: its hidden-connector design changes case and cabling requirements.
