A MetaMask connection failure can come from the site, browser, another wallet extension, a pending permission request, or a mismatch in account or network. If clicking Connect does nothing on desktop, MetaMask recommends temporarily disabling other wallet extensions first. Then work through the checks below in order; most are reversible and do not require reinstalling your wallet.
Start with these five checks
- Verify the site. Use the dapp’s official URL and its own Connect button. Don’t follow unsolicited support links or enter your Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP) into a website, chat, or “verification” form.
- Unlock MetaMask. Open the extension or app and check that the intended account and a network supported by the site are selected.
- Disable competing wallet extensions. On desktop, temporarily turn off other wallet extensions, reload the site, and try again.
- Resolve any pending request. Open MetaMask, approve or reject an outstanding connection request, then reload the site and retry.
- Compare carefully. Try another known-good Web3 site or a clean browser profile with MetaMask as the only wallet extension. This helps distinguish a site problem from a browser or wallet problem.
A connection and a transaction are different steps. Connecting typically gives a site access to the selected public account address and related public blockchain information; it does not by itself authorize a transfer. A later signature or token approval can have consequences, so read every MetaMask request before approving it. See MetaMask’s explanation of dapp connections.
If clicking Connect does nothing
MetaMask identifies multiple active browser wallets as a common reason a dapp may not connect to its extension. Wallet extensions can compete to provide the connection, and a site’s wallet-selection code may not handle every combination correctly. Temporarily disable other wallet extensions without uninstalling them, leave MetaMask enabled, reload the dapp, and try again. MetaMask documents these extension settings pages:

These paths and browser labels can vary. If disabling other wallets does not help, check that MetaMask itself is enabled and allowed to interact with the site. A browser pop-up blocker, privacy tool, ad blocker, or script-blocking extension may interfere with the site’s connection flow. Test by allowing a required pop-up for that site only, or temporarily disabling blockers for the test. Avoid turning off browser protections more broadly than necessary.

For a cleaner test, open a new browser profile with MetaMask and no other extensions, then visit the verified site. If it works there, the cause is likely something in the original profile—such as an extension, stored site state, or browser setting. This is an isolation test, not evidence that one browser is universally more compatible. MetaMask’s extension connection troubleshooting covers competing wallets and browser extension settings.
If MetaMask opens but the site still says disconnected
First look in MetaMask for an outstanding connection or permissions request. A prompt may no longer be visible on top of the browser while the request remains unresolved. Approve or reject it, return to the site, reload, and try again. If the message says a permissions request is already pending, resolve that request rather than repeatedly clicking Connect; MetaMask’s dapp troubleshooting index includes guidance for pending requests.
If there is no pending request, close the dapp tab, lock and unlock MetaMask, reopen the site in a fresh tab, and retry. If needed, fully restart the browser. MetaMask also recommends restarting the app on mobile when troubleshooting.

The site may have retained an old connection or failed to update its interface after MetaMask responded. Disconnect that site and reconnect:
- Extension: Open MetaMask, open the top-right menu, choose Dapp connections, select the site, and choose Disconnect.
- MetaMask Mobile: Open the site in MetaMask’s Explore tab, tap the account icon in the top-right, review the site’s permissions, and tap Disconnect all.
Then reload the dapp and connect again. MetaMask’s disconnect instructions describe these flows; menu names and locations can vary with app version.
Check the selected account and network
A dapp connection request can ask for access to selected accounts and enabled networks. Check that the account shown in MetaMask is the one you intend to use. If the site previously connected to another account, disconnect it, select the correct account, and reconnect. Don’t assume the address shown on the site is the account you meant to choose.

Also check the network. The wallet may connect successfully while the dapp remains unusable because it expects a different supported chain. Confirm the site’s documented network requirements and MetaMask’s selected network. If the site asks to switch networks, review the request and make sure it matches the site you intended to use. Don’t add a custom network or RPC endpoint from an unverified source just to force a connection.

MetaMask Mobile: use the right connection flow
On a phone, opening a dapp in a regular mobile browser and handing it off to MetaMask is not the same as opening it inside MetaMask. For a direct test, open MetaMask, go to Explore, visit the site, tap Connect, select MetaMask if prompted, review the requested account and permissions, and approve only if they are expected.

If MetaMask opens but does not return to the site, or the page spins indefinitely, force-close and reopen the app and retry. Mobile browser handoffs, app links, QR-code connections, and WalletConnect-style flows depend on the phone’s operating system, browser, app versions, and the dapp’s connector. Trying the site inside MetaMask Explore can help isolate a handoff problem, but it will not fix every mobile compatibility issue.
Find out whether the dapp is the problem
Use this comparison to narrow the cause:
- Only one site fails: The dapp may be down, have a connection integration or domain issue, or not support the selected network. Check its official status page or support channel and contact the site first.
- Every site fails in one browser: Focus on MetaMask’s extension state, browser permissions, competing wallets, privacy tools, and stored site state. Test a clean profile or another supported browser.
- Several sites fail across devices: Check that MetaMask is functioning and that your internet connection is stable. If the issue persists, contact MetaMask through its official support route.
- The wallet connects but a transaction fails: This is a separate transaction problem. Note the exact error and network before seeking help; don’t approve unexpected requests just to test.
When you contact a dapp, provide its exact URL, your browser and operating system, whether you use the extension or mobile app, the selected network, the exact error, and whether another known-good dapp works. Screenshots can help, but crop or redact sensitive information. Never send a password, private key, SRP, or wallet backup. MetaMask’s FAQs advise users to contact the site first for a site-specific connection problem.

Update safely; don’t rush to reinstall
Update your browser and MetaMask through the official browser extension store, app store, or MetaMask’s official download flow, then restart and retry. MetaMask says extension updates occur automatically when the wallet is locked and unlocked; mobile updates may depend on the device’s app-update settings. No particular version number is required for these checks.

Do not uninstall or reinstall MetaMask as an early fix. Before any installation change, make sure you have a correct, safely stored backup of your SRP. Never reveal it to support or enter it into a dapp. MetaMask notes that entering the phrase to restore an existing wallet in a new installation is a rare legitimate use; a connection failure does not require you to disclose it to a website or support agent.
Important: disconnecting is not revoking token approvals
Disconnecting removes or limits the site’s connection to your wallet account; it does not automatically cancel token allowances you previously granted to smart contracts. If your concern is a token approval, you need a separate approval-review and revocation process. Treat an unexpected transaction or approval prompt as a security issue, not as a routine connection step. MetaMask explains this distinction in its dapp disconnection guidance.
Be especially wary of pages or people asking you to “synchronize,” “validate,” “unlock,” or “verify” a wallet to fix a connection. Never share your SRP or private key, and do not sign a transaction just because a site says it is needed to connect. If you already approved something suspicious, stop interacting with the site and use official wallet documentation or support to review the approval and protect the account. Do not trust search ads, unsolicited messages, or social replies claiming to offer wallet recovery.

For dapp operators
Support both extension and mobile connection paths, handle multiple-wallet discovery rather than assuming a single injected provider, and show a clear state after approval. Distinguish rejected or pending requests from unsupported-network and provider errors, offer an appropriate fallback where possible, and provide a clear status page and support route. Never direct users to enter a recovery phrase. MetaMask’s developer documentation covers wallet integration.
