If Windows 10 won’t let you change screen resolution, first select the correct monitor in Settings → System → Display, then try its Recommended resolution. If the option is missing, greyed out, limited to low resolutions, or keeps reverting, check the graphics driver and display connection before trying advanced fixes. The right solution depends on which symptom you see.
Quick checks
- In Settings → System → Display, select the monitor you want to change.
- Restart the PC, then press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. The screen may flicker briefly or beep.
- Check the monitor’s selected input, cable, adapter, dock, and ports. If possible, connect the monitor directly to the PC.
- Check Device Manager for Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or a warning icon under Display adapters.
- Install the correct graphics driver, or roll it back if the problem started after an update.
These steps address common driver and connection problems, but they cannot make an unsupported resolution work. A monitor, graphics device, cable, adapter, dock, and selected refresh rate must all support the display mode.
1. Select the monitor you actually want to change
With more than one display connected, Windows applies resolution settings to the selected display. Open Start → Settings → System → Display, choose Identify if you are unsure which screen is which, then click the correct display in the diagram.

Under Scale and layout, open Display resolution, select a mode, and choose Keep changes if the picture looks right. You can open this page quickly by pressing Win + R, entering ms-settings:display, and pressing Enter. Microsoft’s Windows display instructions also begin by selecting the display.

If you are using Duplicate, Windows may need to use a mode compatible with both screens. Press Win + P and try Extend while troubleshooting, then select the external monitor again.
2. Choose the recommended resolution—and distinguish resolution from scaling
Windows normally marks the monitor’s native or preferred resolution as Recommended. It is usually the sharpest setting. A lower or non-native mode can make text less crisp, or leave the picture stretched, centered, or surrounded by black borders. If you only want text and apps to appear larger, adjust Scale instead of lowering resolution.
If the desired setting is absent, do not force a custom mode as a first fix. The monitor or connection may not support it, and a forced mode can produce a blank or distorted picture. When testing another mode, wait for Windows’ confirmation prompt and choose Revert if the display is unusable; if the prompt times out, Windows should return to the previous setting.

A missing, generic, damaged, or incompatible driver is a common reason the resolution list disappears or offers only a few low modes. To inspect it, right-click Start, open Device Manager, and expand Display adapters.

If the list shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows is using a generic fallback rather than the graphics manufacturer’s driver. Microsoft explains that the basic adapter may lack higher resolutions, multi-monitor support, and other graphics features. A warning icon beside a GPU is another clue. On a laptop with switchable graphics, check every listed adapter; the built-in screen may be driven by integrated graphics even when apps use a separate GPU.
Update the driver
- In Device Manager, expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for updated driver software, then restart if prompted.
If Windows does not find a suitable driver, download the driver for your exact PC or graphics-device model from the PC maker or GPU manufacturer’s official support site. For laptops, start with the laptop manufacturer: its driver may include support for the internal panel, graphics switching, power management, or dock. Avoid third-party “driver updater” utilities.
You can also check Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → View optional updates and inspect any listed Driver updates. Availability varies by device and servicing status. Microsoft’s guidance for graphics-device problems covers driver updates and manufacturer drivers.

Roll back a driver after a recent update
If the problem began immediately after a graphics-driver update, try rolling back before uninstalling anything:

- In Device Manager, expand Display adapters and right-click the adapter.
- Choose Properties, open the Driver tab, and select Roll Back Driver.
- Restart Windows and check the resolution list again.
The rollback button may be unavailable if Windows no longer has a previous driver to restore. Microsoft lists rollback as an option when a recent driver change causes display problems; see its display-driver troubleshooting steps.
Reinstall a missing or corrupted driver
If updating does not help and the driver appears damaged, download the known-good replacement from the PC or GPU manufacturer first. Then, in Device Manager, right-click the adapter under Display adapters and choose Uninstall device. Restart; Windows will attempt to reinstall a driver, which may be generic or may not be the newest OEM version, so install the manufacturer’s package if needed.
If Windows offers to delete the driver package, use that option cautiously—and preferably only when you already have a replacement. Administrator access may be required. If the display is too broken for normal troubleshooting, use Safe Mode as described below.

An external monitor showing fewer resolutions than expected does not automatically mean its driver is at fault. Check the monitor’s on-screen menu to confirm the selected input, then isolate the connection:

- Try another compatible cable and another port on the PC or monitor.
- Connect the monitor directly to the computer, bypassing the dock or adapter.
- If the desktop has a dedicated graphics card, connect the monitor to that card’s outputs rather than the motherboard’s video output.
- Test the monitor with another computer, or test the PC with another monitor.
- For USB-C, confirm that the particular port supports video output; a USB-C connector alone does not guarantee it.
Older or unsuitable cables, adapters, and docks can limit the resolution or refresh rate the display connection can carry. A monitor may also support a mode only at a lower refresh rate. These are possibilities to test, not proof that any one component is defective.

A high refresh rate can remove a resolution from the available combinations. To test, open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display settings → Display adapter properties, then inspect the Monitor tab and try a conventional refresh rate such as 60 Hz if it is offered. The exact choices depend on the display and connection. Microsoft notes that changing refresh rate can change the resolution Windows uses; see its refresh-rate guidance.
Resolution provides workspace and detail; refresh rate affects how smoothly motion appears. The monitor, GPU, cable, adapter, dock, and selected display mode must support the combination. If the target resolution appears at a lower refresh rate, that points to a compatibility limit in the current setup rather than a resolution setting you can safely override.
Press Win + P to test PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, or Second screen only. For diagnosis, Extend is often useful because each screen can use its own mode. If the setting reverts immediately, after restart, or only after reconnecting a monitor, note when it happens: an unsupported mode, unstable driver, dock renegotiation, or a management policy could be involved. A third-party GPU control panel may also override Windows settings.

6. Recover from a black screen or unusable picture
If the screen goes black after applying a mode, wait for the confirmation timer to expire so Windows can revert. You can also press Esc, reconnect the display, or press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. For additional blank-screen steps, consult Microsoft’s Windows blank-screen troubleshooting.
If the picture remains unusable and you cannot reach normal settings, enter Windows Recovery Environment by interrupting startup two or three times, then choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart. Select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking and roll back, remove, or reinstall the display driver. Use forced shutdowns only when necessary to regain access, not as a routine troubleshooting step.
If the fault began recently after a driver, Windows, or application change, System Restore from Windows Recovery Environment may help return the PC to an earlier working state. Treat it as an advanced recovery option and choose a restore point from before the display problem began.

7. Check for a graphics-device error or hardware fault
In Device Manager, open the graphics adapter’s Properties and read its device status. Error code 43 means the graphics device reported that it is not working properly; the cause may be a driver or software installation, or hardware. Update or roll back the driver as appropriate, then use the manufacturer’s driver. If the error persists after a clean reinstall, or if the display has artifacts, crashes, or loses signal under load, hardware diagnosis may be necessary.
Hardware becomes more likely when multiple known-good cables and ports fail, the monitor works with another computer but not this PC, or the problem occurs before Windows loads. Conversely, if the same monitor works on another computer and the PC works with another monitor, focus on the original connection path—such as its port, adapter, dock, or driver. Cross-testing narrows the fault; it does not by itself identify a specific failed part.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 standard support ended on October 14, 2025. The operating system still runs, but standard support and routine free security updates are no longer provided under that lifecycle. Driver and update availability can vary by device and servicing arrangement. This does not change the resolution steps above, but it matters when deciding whether to keep troubleshooting an older system or move to a supported Windows version.
Which fix should you try first?
- Dropdown missing or stuck at a low resolution: select the correct monitor, then check for Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or a warning icon and install the correct driver.
- Resolution disappeared after an update: roll back the graphics driver; if that is unavailable, install the PC maker’s known-good driver.
- Only an external monitor is affected: check its input, cable, adapter, dock, direct connection, and Win + P mode.
- Desired resolution missing only at a high refresh rate: test a lower supported refresh rate and verify the connection supports the combination.
- Change reverts or produces a blank image: revert or wait for timeout; if the screen remains unusable, reset the driver or use Safe Mode.
- Persistent Device Manager error or pre-Windows display faults: after driver and connection checks, seek hardware service.
Do not use registry tweaks or custom-resolution tools as a first response. They cannot add capabilities missing from the monitor, GPU, or connection and may leave you with an unusable display.
