The Ubiquiti UCK-G2-SSD is a compact local UniFi console with a pre-installed, user-upgradeable 1 TB 2.5-inch SATA SSD. It can host UniFi Network, Protect, Access, Talk, and Connect, making it useful as a dedicated controller and small camera-storage appliance. It is not a router, firewall, switch, Wi-Fi access point, or gateway, so it still needs separate network-edge hardware.
The model also needs to be distinguished from the older HDD-based UCK-G2-PLUS. Ubiquiti currently lists them as separate products.
What the UCK-G2-SSD is—and is not
The CloudKey UCK-G2-SSD is a local UniFi OS console. It centralizes management for compatible UniFi equipment without requiring a workstation, virtual machine, NAS, or hosted-management arrangement to remain online.
In a typical deployment, the architecture looks like this:

Router/firewall → PoE switch or LAN → CloudKey and UniFi devicesThe CloudKey manages devices, stores supported application data, and can host UniFi Protect recordings. It does not route internet traffic, provide firewalling or DHCP, supply Wi-Fi, or offer switch ports for other devices. A separate router, firewall, gateway, or UniFi Cloud Gateway is still required.
It is also not a general-purpose server or a multi-drive NVR. Its appeal is appliance simplicity: install it, connect it to the LAN, and manage UniFi applications from one small physical device.
ServeTheHome’s December 21, 2025 article describes it as a controller box with a 1 TB SSD rather than a switch or gateway.

The names are easy to confuse, particularly because older Ubiquiti documentation focused on the HDD-based CloudKey Gen2 Plus. The current UCK-G2-SSD is a separate listed SKU.

The current UCK-G2-SSD technical listing and UCK-G2-PLUS technical listing should be treated as the authoritative model references. Older UCK-G2-PLUS data sheets may show different capacity figures and should not be silently applied to the SSD SKU.

The anodized-aluminum enclosure includes a front OLED status display and status LED, a removable 2.5-inch drive tray, a Kensington security slot, USB-C, microSD, a power button, and a 1GbE port with PoE input. The underside includes the SSD-release latch and a rack-link interface.

Its single 1GbE interface is sufficient for a management appliance, but it reinforces what the CloudKey is not: this is not a high-throughput gateway or multi-port network appliance.

UniFi applications
Ubiquiti currently lists support for:
- UniFi Network: management and configuration of UniFi networking equipment.
- UniFi Protect: camera management and local recording.
- UniFi Access: compatible access-control management.
- UniFi Talk: compatible UniFi telephony services.
- UniFi Connect: compatible connected-device and display management.
ServeTheHome observed UniFi Network installed by default and additional application-management options in the dashboard. Application availability, requirements, and interface labels can change with UniFi OS and application releases. Ubiquiti’s list should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every application can run simultaneously at maximum scale.
Setup and first use
The basic setup is straightforward:
- Connect the CloudKey’s Ethernet port to the LAN.
- Provide PoE, or connect compatible USB-C power.
- Find its DHCP address using the OLED display, the router’s lease table, or UniFi discovery tools.
- Open the console in a supported browser and complete account and password setup.
- Update UniFi OS and installed applications before adopting production devices.
- Install or enable the applications required by the deployment.
- Adopt UniFi devices from the relevant application.
- Configure backups and test recovery before relying on the appliance.
In ServeTheHome’s setup, the unit received a DHCP address, displayed it on the front panel, reached the dashboard after account creation, and discovered a UXG-Lite ready for adoption. The older Ubiquiti Quick Start Guide recommends Chrome because other browsers may have limited functionality; treat that as guidance for the guide’s software era rather than a permanent browser requirement.
What the 1 TB SSD is used for
Protect recordings
The SSD provides local storage for supported UniFi Protect recordings. Actual retention depends on camera resolution, frame rate, bitrate, continuous versus motion-triggered recording, retention settings, smart-detection activity, and the other applications running on the console.

Therefore, “1 TB equals a specific number of recording days” is not a meaningful claim without a defined camera mix and recording policy. Ubiquiti lists the UCK-G2-SSD for up to 24 HD, 14 2K, or 8 4K cameras, but those are vendor capacity figures—not retention guarantees or independent test results.

Application and console data
The SSD also stores supported UniFi application data and console configuration. The 32 GB eMMC remains part of the system architecture; the removable SSD is not simply a replacement for every internal storage function.
Why SSD storage matters
Compared with the mechanical HDD supplied with the older UCK-G2-PLUS, an SSD avoids moving parts and should be quieter and less mechanically vulnerable. The available quick-look coverage does not establish a specific application-speed improvement, camera-retention gain, or measured performance advantage over the HDD model.
Drive replacement and compatibility
Ubiquiti’s current storage requirements specify these important constraints for CloudKey+ systems:
- Use a 2.5-inch SATA drive.
- Use a drive operating from 5 V power; drives requiring additional power are unsupported.
- Use at least 1 TB for current CloudKey+ storage guidance.
- For Protect workloads, DRAM cache and at least 0.3 drive writes per day endurance are recommended.
Not every physically compatible 2.5-inch SSD is equally suitable. A cheap DRAM-less or low-endurance drive may operate, but it is a weaker choice for continuous surveillance writes. Check the drive’s power profile, endurance rating, warranty, and suitability for sustained writes.
Replacing the drive safely
Ubiquiti’s Quick Start Guide warns that replacing the drive resets configurations stored on it. Before opening the tray:
- Export or verify a current UniFi OS console backup.
- Confirm that the backup can actually be accessed.
- Shut the CloudKey down cleanly.
- Replace the drive only while the unit is powered off.
- Initialize the new drive and restore the configuration.
- Recheck application installation, device adoption, users, remote access, and retention settings.
Power and networking
The CloudKey can receive power over PoE through its Ethernet connection or through USB-C using a compatible Quick Charge 2.0/3.0 adapter, according to Ubiquiti’s technical listing. A PoE-capable switch or compatible injector is usually the cleanest installation. USB-C is useful on a lab bench or on a network without PoE.

Keep the power figures separate:
- 9.6 W: Ubiquiti’s stated maximum specification.
- 3.6 W idle and up to 5.2 W: ServeTheHome’s observed measurements under its test conditions.
Actual consumption varies with application load, storage activity, connected peripherals, and power-conversion losses. ServeTheHome also reported that its sample did not include a USB-C power adapter, so confirm the package contents for your region and SKU rather than assuming USB-C setup is complete.
Is it good for a UniFi test lab?
Yes. A dedicated physical controller is one of the strongest reasons to buy the UCK-G2-SSD. ServeTheHome used it to simplify testing UniFi hardware, including a UXG-Lite.
- It remains available when a laptop or desktop is powered off.
- It avoids tying the controller to a workstation.
- It provides a consistent appliance image for repeatable testing.
- PoE can carry both network connectivity and power over one cable.
- Local management does not make a hosted subscription the only control path.
- The 1 TB SSD leaves room for Protect experiments and application data.
The trade-off is flexibility. If you already own a mini-PC, NAS, server, or suitable virtualized environment, a self-hosted controller may be cheaper and more adaptable, although it transfers operating-system, backup, and maintenance responsibilities to you.
Who should buy it?
- Small businesses with an existing router or firewall: a tidy local UniFi management appliance with optional Protect storage.
- Homelab users: a compact way to manage UniFi equipment without keeping a full server online.
- Test-lab builders: a repeatable dedicated controller for device adoption and configuration testing.
- Existing UniFi gateway owners: potentially useful, but check for duplicated controller functionality before buying.
It is a poor fit if you need WAN routing, firewalling, DHCP, Wi-Fi, more than 1GbE, redundant storage, extensive camera retention, or the flexibility of a general-purpose server.

Ubiquiti’s advanced-hosting catalog is the appropriate starting point for comparing current CloudKey, gateway, and NVR products. Regional availability, pricing, warranty, and included accessories should be checked immediately before purchase.

Verdict
The UCK-G2-SSD makes sense when you want an uncomplicated, local, physical UniFi controller and already have routing and firewall hardware. Its included SSD makes it a sensible choice for smaller Protect deployments and avoids the mechanical-drive design of the older UCK-G2-PLUS.
It is not an all-in-one UniFi network appliance. Buyers expecting a gateway, switch, Wi-Fi system, multi-drive NVR, or flexible server will need another solution. For a new purchase, the SSD model is the more attractive CloudKey format when its price is competitive—but only if a dedicated controller is actually missing from the existing setup.
UniFi OS, application support, capacity guidance, and interface labels can change. Verify current firmware, regional stock, package contents, and compatibility before deployment.
