Two unfamiliar entries in Task Manager’s Startup apps list are not automatically malware. They may be legitimate update helpers, incomplete application entries, or leftovers from software that has already been removed. They can also indicate potentially unwanted software or malware, but the name alone is not enough to tell.
The safe response is to record the entry’s command line and file path, check its publisher and digital signature, disable it temporarily, and scan the computer before deleting files or registry entries. The original Malwarebytes forum case should not be treated as proof of what any particular “two programs” are unless its original logs and detections are available.
What the Startup apps list actually means
Task Manager’s Startup apps page is an inventory of launch points used when a user signs in to Windows. Older Windows versions may label the page simply Startup. It is not a malware verdict.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Entries can come from registry Run keys, Startup-folder shortcuts, application installers, update services, browser components, drivers, or software that registers a helper program. An entry may also remain after its parent application has been uninstalled. Not every enabled item runs with administrator privileges, and not every item launches before the Windows desktop appears.

The Startup impact column estimates the item’s effect on startup performance. It does not indicate whether the program is safe or dangerous.
Why a startup entry may look strange
- Generic name: Windows may show an executable name or incomplete metadata instead of a friendly product name.
- Missing publisher: The file may lack publisher information, be unsigned, or no longer be available for Windows to identify.
- Broken path: An uninstall may remove the executable but leave its startup registration behind.
- Truncated or confusing command line: Paths containing spaces, such as
C:Program Files..., can be difficult to interpret when displayed incompletely. - Update helper: Some applications start a small updater rather than their main program.
- Security quarantine: Antivirus software may quarantine the file while its old startup registration remains.
- Potentially unwanted software: Adware, browser modifiers, and intrusive “optimizer” tools may create persistence without being conventional viruses. Microsoft describes unwanted software as software that can alter browsing, show intrusive advertising, monitor activity, or reduce user control: Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance.
Comparable Windows troubleshooting cases have linked generic startup entries to truncated paths, legitimate installers, and remnants of removed software—not just malware: example Windows startup-entry discussion.
The safe five-minute check
1. Do not delete anything yet
Do not immediately remove registry keys, EXE or DLL files, services, scheduled tasks, or files identified only by a search-engine result. Deletion is difficult to reverse and can break legitimate software or Windows. Disabling a startup entry is the safer first step.
2. Record the entry’s details
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Right-click the unfamiliar entry and note its name, publisher, status, and startup impact.
- Use available options such as Open file location or Properties.
- Copy or record the full command line if Task Manager exposes it. If the command-line field is not visible, right-click a column heading and enable it where that option is available.
If the entry is not recognized, choose Disable, restart Windows, and check whether any application stops working. You can re-enable it later.
3. Locate the referenced file
If Task Manager does not provide a file-location option, check these Startup folders:

Registry inspection is useful when the command line points to a Run entry, but inexperienced users should not edit the registry as a first step. The common locations are:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
Before changing anything in Registry Editor, export the relevant key or create an appropriate recovery point. A registry entry that points to a missing file is often an orphan, but it should still be identified before removal.

4. Check Installed apps
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and sort by installation date. Look for software installed around the time the startup entries appeared, especially unfamiliar products described as an assistant, updater, search tool, optimizer, toolbar, or browser utility.
If you identify the parent application as unwanted and it appears in Installed apps, uninstall it through Windows Settings rather than deleting its files manually. Microsoft also recommends obtaining software from official websites or the Microsoft Store and avoiding untrusted third-party download sources.
Scan before removing suspicious software
First update Windows Security and its security intelligence, then run a Quick scan. Microsoft says Defender quick scans inspect locations where malware may register itself to start with Windows, including known startup folders and registry locations: Microsoft Defender scan guidance.

If the result is clean but the entry remains suspicious, run a Full scan. Windows 10 and Windows 11 include Microsoft Defender Antivirus, although its active or passive state can change when another antivirus product is installed: Microsoft Defender documentation.
For an elevated PowerShell window, Microsoft documents:
Start-MpScan
That starts an on-demand Defender scan. To start Defender Offline, which restarts the computer and scans outside the normal Windows environment, use:
Start-MpWDOScan
Save open work before running the offline scan. It is appropriate when the entry returns, interferes with scanning, or appears persistent. More details are available in Microsoft’s Start-MpWDOScan documentation.
An elevated Command Prompt can also use Microsoft’s Defender command-line tool. The platform directory varies by installed Defender version; common locations include C:Program FilesWindows Defender and C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindows DefenderPlatform<version>.

MpCmdRun.exe -Scan -ScanType 1
MpCmdRun.exe -Scan -ScanType 2
The first command requests a quick scan and the second a full scan. Microsoft documents the command-line options here.
Malwarebytes is optional as a second-opinion scanner, particularly for adware and potentially unwanted programs. It is not mandatory if Defender is functioning and updated. Avoid running multiple real-time antivirus products simultaneously; use one active antivirus and deliberately run another scanner as a second opinion.

| Lower-risk indicators | More concerning indicators |
|---|---|
| Recognized publisher and application | Random-looking executable name |
File under C:Program Files or C:Program Files (x86) |
Unsigned or invalidly signed file |
| Valid signature from the expected vendor | File in a temporary or randomly named folder |
| Entry appeared with software you intentionally installed | Command launches PowerShell, JavaScript, wscript.exe, mshta.exe, or encoded commands |
| Entry disappears after a normal uninstall | Entry returns after being disabled |
| No security-product detection | Defender or Malwarebytes reports a specific threat |
These are indicators, not verdicts. Legitimate applications can run from %AppData%, while malware can imitate a trusted folder or publisher name. Check the file’s properties and digital signature, installation history, command line, and security-tool result together.
A clean scan lowers concern but cannot prove that a computer is completely uncompromised. Conversely, a detection should be investigated by its exact threat name and file path rather than by a generic label in Task Manager.

Treat a generic label as an incomplete or orphaned registration first. Record the command line if possible, inspect the two Startup folders, check the relevant Run locations if you are comfortable doing so, and scan the referenced file. Do not infer malware solely from the word “Program” or from a missing publisher.

When Task Manager is not enough
Task Manager does not show every persistence mechanism. A program can return through a scheduled task, Windows service, browser extension, WMI event subscription, logon script, driver, or boot component.
Advanced users can use Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns to inventory many more autostart locations. Use it for inspection first. Do not uncheck or delete entries unless you understand the publisher, path, and role of the item. Microsoft’s Secure Boot and related boot protections help protect early startup stages, but they do not make ordinary Startup apps automatically trustworthy: Windows boot-security documentation.
Disable, uninstall, or quarantine?
- Disable first: Choose this when the publisher is unknown, the item may be leftover, or you need time to investigate. It is reversible.
- Uninstall: Use Windows Settings when the associated application is identified as unwanted, was not intentionally installed, and appears in Installed apps.
- Quarantine or delete: Let a reputable security tool handle this after it identifies the file. Preserve the detection name and path, and ensure you have a recovery option.
Do not manually delete files from Windows system directories or remove services and scheduled tasks simply because their names look unfamiliar.
If the startup entry returns
- Record the full path, command line, and any Defender or Malwarebytes detection name.
- Disconnect from the internet if there are signs of active compromise, such as unexplained account activity or aggressive pop-ups.
- Run Microsoft Defender Offline.
- Run a second-opinion scan if appropriate.
- Inspect scheduled tasks, services, browser extensions, and other Autoruns locations.
- Change important passwords from a known-clean device if account theft may have occurred.
- Seek specialist malware-removal help instead of repeatedly deleting files.
What this means for the original Malwarebytes forum title
A “resolved” Malwarebytes forum thread can provide useful context, but the exact diagnosis depends on its original startup names, file paths, logs, detections, and moderator conclusion. Without those verified records, it is not responsible to name the two programs or claim that they were malware—or harmless remnants.
For a Windows 10 or Windows 11 user today, the correct conclusion is practical: identify the command line and file, disable before deleting, check Installed apps, scan with Defender, and escalate if the entry recreates itself or is tied to suspicious behavior.
