Two Chrome extensions called SearchBlox were found to contain a backdoor targeting Roblox users in November 2022. One had more than 200,000 downloads; the other had 959. The figure was not “200,000K” (200 million), and downloads do not prove that every user’s account was stolen. Google later said it removed and blocklisted the extensions.
What happened with SearchBlox?
On November 23, 2022, security reporting identified malicious code in two extensions named SearchBlox. They claimed to help users search Roblox servers or find players by username. Investigators found a backdoor that could put Roblox credentials at risk. BleepingComputer’s incident report documented the findings and Google’s response.
The headline figure needs correcting: one extension had more than 200,000 downloads, while the second had 959. “200,000K” would mean more than 200 million. Neither the download count nor the presence of the backdoor establishes how many accounts were actually accessed or stolen.

These IDs are for identification, not download links. The extensions were removed from the Chrome Web Store, according to Google’s statement reported at the time. The incident is historical; it is not evidence that these same extensions are currently available or actively spreading.

How the backdoor worked
Researchers found suspicious code in content.js in the larger extension and button.js in the smaller one. The obfuscated code contacted searchblox[.]site for JavaScript disguised as image- or HTML-related content. The code appeared capable of sending Roblox credentials to releasethen[.]site. Reporting also discussed interaction with Roblox trading-profile information on Rolimons, though coverage of that detail changed in later updates. Candid.Technology’s summary provides additional incident context.
In plain terms, the extensions’ advertised search tools were separate from the suspicious behavior investigators found. The reported code could expose credentials, but public reporting did not establish that every copy ran the payload, that every downloader was compromised, or that any particular number of Roblox accounts was taken over. It also did not conclusively establish whether the code was deliberately added by the developer or introduced after a compromise.

What Google did
Google told BleepingComputer that the extensions had been removed from the Chrome Web Store, blocklisted, and set for automatic removal from systems where they had been installed. That was Google’s statement as reported on November 23, 2022—not a current independent inventory of every browser or device.
If you installed SearchBlox, take these steps
- Check each browser profile. In Chrome, open the three-dot menu and select Extensions → Manage extensions. Remove SearchBlox and any extension you do not recognize. A blocklisted extension may already be disabled or gone. If you use Edge, Opera, or another Chromium-based browser, check its own extension manager too; also check other Chrome profiles and synced settings.
- Run a full malware scan. Roblox recommends removing malware before trying to recover a compromised account. Use a trusted security scanner; a paid product is not a required part of this response. Roblox’s account-recovery guidance explains its recommended steps.
- Change your Roblox password on the official site. Do not follow login links from an extension, Discord message, video description, or free-Robux offer.
- Replace reused passwords. If you used the same password for email, trading, or another service, change it there too and use a unique password for each account.
- Enable two-step verification (2SV). Use an authenticator app where available, and never share verification or backup codes.
- Review account activity and security settings. Look for unfamiliar logins, changed contact details, trades, missing Robux or items, unfamiliar connected apps, and active sessions. Sign out of other sessions if Roblox offers that option for your account.
- Clear browser cookies and site data after removing the extension. This is a prudent cleanup step because uninstalling an extension cannot prove that previously exposed session information was not copied.
- Contact Roblox Support if you believe the account was compromised. Roblox advises contacting support within 30 days of the compromise. Recovery of items or Robux is not guaranteed; Roblox says it does not support or enforce deals made outside its official systems.
Uninstalling the extension is important, but it does not undo possible credential or cookie exposure. If suspicious activity continues after cleanup, secure the email account tied to Roblox as well and seek help through official support channels.

How to judge Roblox extensions safely
Chrome Web Store availability alone is not a safety guarantee. Before installing an extension, check whether its developer is identifiable, its permissions make sense for the feature, its documentation and updates are credible, and users report redirects, forced logins, or unexplained account activity. Avoid extensions or sites that ask you to provide your Roblox password, browser cookie or .ROBLOSECURITY token, 2SV code, or backup code outside Roblox’s official login flow. Do not reinstall a similarly named extension from a mirror, Discord server, or unofficial store.
Roblox advises users not to share passwords, cookies, 2SV codes, or backup codes, and to enter credentials only on official Roblox login pages. What is still unknown
The public reporting did not establish how many people suffered credential theft or account takeover, whether every installed copy executed the payload, or who added the backdoor. Community claims about suspicious inventory activity are not proof of developer responsibility. The defensible conclusion is narrower: two SearchBlox extensions contained a backdoor capable of putting Roblox users at risk; Google said it removed and blocklisted them; the download figures are not a count of confirmed victims.
