Twitter is now called X, but the troubleshooting is the same. First open x.com, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, then restart and update the app. Those tests quickly show whether the failure is an X outage, a network problem, a damaged app session, or an account issue.
Check whether X is down or the problem is local
Do these checks before deleting the app:
- Open x.com in a browser. If it works there but not in the app, the installation, cache, compatibility, or session is more likely than a platform outage.
- Try mobile data instead of Wi‑Fi, or Wi‑Fi instead of mobile data. Also test another device if available.
- Check whether other apps and websites work.
- Check X’s official status information through the X status page and Help Center. A status page may not show every regional, account-specific, app-release, or ISP problem.

Quick fixes for everyone
- Force-close X and open it again.
- Restart the phone or tablet.
- Check Wi‑Fi or mobile-data signal and try another network.
- Temporarily disable a VPN. X says VPN interference can prevent connections; disabling it is a diagnostic test, not a permanent recommendation.
- Update X from the official Google Play listing or App Store listing.
- Install available Android, iOS, or iPadOS updates.
- Try x.com in a private or incognito browser window.

Android: force-stop, clear data, or reinstall
Update Android and X
- Open Settings > System > System update (the wording varies by manufacturer).
- Open Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, choose Manage apps & devices, and update X.
Google’s general sequence is documented at Android app troubleshooting.
Force-stop and clear temporary files
- Go to Settings > Apps > X > Force stop, then reopen X.
- If it still fails, choose Storage & cache > Clear cache. This removes temporary files and is the lower-risk option.
- As a more disruptive step, choose Clear storage or Clear data. This resets local app state and normally requires signing in again. X says it does not delete the account, but notification and sync settings are reset.
Reinstall Android X safely
Before uninstalling, save unsent drafts, confirm your password or another sign-in method, and save a login-verification backup code if two-factor authentication is enabled. X warns that logging out or reinstalling can clear drafts. Do not use unofficial APK sites. X lists at least 50 MB of free space for Android installation on its help page; treat that as X’s stated figure, not a universal current Android requirement.

iPhone and iPad: update, re-add, or redownload
Update the app and iOS
- Open the App Store, tap the profile icon, and check App Updates.
- If X has no update, install any available iOS or iPadOS update.
- Force-close X and restart the device.
Apple’s current app-repair sequence is described at Apple Support. X says devices on iOS 13.7 or lower may not receive newer X app updates; this is a compatibility warning, not a guarantee about every newer device.
Remove and add the account again
- In X, open the profile menu.
- Go to Settings and privacy > Your account > Account information > Log out (labels can vary by version).
- Reopen X and sign in.
Save drafts first: X warns that removing an account can clear unsent posts. Also confirm access to your authenticator, security key, SMS method, passkey, or backup code before logging out.

Delete and redownload
- Save drafts and confirm account-recovery access.
- Delete X, then restart the device.
- Reinstall it from the App Store or the official X download page.
X’s iOS page states that installation may require 130 MB of free space. That is X’s published figure and may vary by device or app version.
Fix the symptom you actually have
The app will not open or keeps crashing
Force-close it, restart the device, update X and the operating system, then clear Android cache or delete and redownload on iPhone/iPad. Check free storage. If crashes began immediately after an update and continue after reinstalling, use x.com or another supported device while waiting for an official fix; do not install modified or old APKs.

The app opens but the timeline is blank
Switch networks, disable the VPN, try x.com privately, update the app, then clear Android cache or remove and re-add the iOS account. Browser users should update the browser, clear cache and cookies, and disable extensions or ad blockers. X’s web guidance is at X issues and browser troubleshooting.
I cannot log in
Update X and enable automatic date, time, and time zone. Verify the username, email, phone number, and password, then try signing in at x.com. “Unauthorized” or “Invalid username and password” can be associated with an outdated client or incorrect device time. If necessary, use X’s official password-recovery flow.

If desktop login works but the app does not, treat it as an app, session, or device problem: update, clear Android data, re-add the iOS account, check date/time, or reinstall. A passkey can be an alternative sign-in method when available, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
If the app works but mobile-browser login fails, clear mobile-browser cache and cookies, ensure JavaScript is enabled, try a computer, and restart the phone. See X’s mobile-browser login guidance.

Posts, replies, Direct Messages, images, or videos will not send
- If every feature fails, test the network and account session first.
- If text posts work but media fails, check connection quality, permissions, and whether the media is still processing.
- If posting fails only on Wi‑Fi, test mobile data and inspect router or VPN filtering.
- If only one account or Direct Messages are affected, investigate account restrictions or a feature-specific service problem before reinstalling.
Do not rely on old posting limits or media specifications; X can change them.
Notifications are missing
After clearing Android data or reinstalling, review X notification and sync settings again. Also check the phone’s system notification permissions, battery restrictions, and whether the account is signed in to the intended profile.

Open https://x.com in a current Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge window. Use private browsing, clear site cache and cookies, disable extensions temporarily, and confirm JavaScript is enabled. X also recommends reviewing and revoking unnecessary third-party account connections. The browser is a workaround and may handle some mobile-app features differently.
When to contact X support
Use the official Help Center when the issue persists across networks and devices, password recovery fails, login verification is blocked, the app crashes after every reinstall, both x.com and the official app reject the same account, or the account appears locked, compromised, suspended, or restricted.

Avoid unofficial “X support” phone numbers, repair tools, and download sites.
