The “Twitch hack” refers to a real security incident disclosed on October 6, 2021. Twitch later said a server-configuration change allowed improper access, exposing source-code repository documents and a subset of creator-payout data. The company said its login-credential systems were not accessed, Twitch passwords were not exposed, and full credit-card numbers and bank information were not accessed.
That distinction matters: the breach was serious, but claims that every Twitch account or password was exposed go beyond what Twitch confirmed. The incident is historical; the information here does not establish that a platform-wide breach is happening now.
What happened in the Twitch hack?
Twitch acknowledged on October 6, 2021, that a malicious third party had accessed data exposed to the internet. In its fuller update on October 15, Twitch attributed the incident to a server-configuration change that allowed improper access. The company did not specify the exact technical error or how the attacker first gained access, so more precise explanations—such as a particular cloud-storage mistake or stolen employee password—should not be treated as established fact.
Contemporaneous coverage described a roughly 125-GB archive circulating online. That figure and the archive’s broader inventory came from reporting about the leak, not a complete itemized disclosure by Twitch. Axios reported on the incident and the reported archive contents in its October 6, 2021 coverage.

Twitch hack timeline
- October 6, 2021: Twitch acknowledged that some data had been exposed and accessed by a malicious third party.
- October 7, 2021: Twitch reset all stream keys as a precaution.
- October 15, 2021: Twitch published a fuller account, saying a server-configuration change had enabled improper access and describing the information it believed was affected.

What data was leaked?
It helps to separate Twitch’s own description from the wider claims made about the leak.
What Twitch said was affected
Twitch said exposed material primarily included documents from its source-code repository and a subset of creator-payout data. It described the affected users as a small fraction of users and said it was contacting impacted people directly.

What contemporaneous reports described
Reports about the archive said it included source code for parts of Twitch’s site and related applications, payout reports, internal company material, and references to an unreleased game-store project. Some coverage also discussed encrypted credential material. These descriptions should remain attributed to reporting about the archive; they are not all items Twitch independently confirmed in its public update. A10 Networks offered additional industry commentary on the reported data exfiltration and creator payouts in its technical discussion.
The leak’s presentation reportedly claimed to contain “the entirety of Twitch,” but that phrase is not proof that every system, account, or user record was accessed. Nor does the appearance of a category in a leak report establish that every item in that category was exposed.
Were Twitch passwords exposed?
Twitch’s October 15 update said passwords were not exposed and that systems storing login credentials were not accessed. It said those credentials were hashed using bcrypt. Earlier, while investigating, Twitch had said it had no indication that login credentials were exposed; the later statement was more definitive.

Some reporting referred to encrypted or hashed password material, but a password hash is not the same as a readable password. The sources do not establish that Twitch passwords were stolen in plaintext or that any hashes were cracked. Twitch’s statement is that passwords and the credential-storage systems were not accessed.

For clarity, a password is used to sign in to Twitch. A stream key is a separate credential that broadcasting software can use to send video to a channel. The 2021 stream-key reset does not mean Twitch confirmed that login passwords were compromised.
Were credit-card or bank details exposed?
Twitch said full credit-card numbers were not stored by Twitch and were not exposed. It also said ACH and bank information were not accessed. That does not mean no payment-related information was involved: Twitch separately acknowledged that a subset of creator-payout data was exposed. Payout reports or related metadata are not the same thing as full card numbers or bank-account credentials.

What did the streamer payout leak show?
Reports about the leaked archive said it included Twitch payout information for creators, with coverage estimating that records involved nearly 2.4 million streamers. Treat that number as a reported estimate, not a Twitch-confirmed total.
The figures drew attention because they revealed the scale of Twitch’s payments to creators and made differences in platform earnings visible. But a Twitch payout figure is not a creator’s total income: it does not necessarily include sponsorships, donations, merchandise, revenue from other platforms, or other business arrangements. The leak therefore offered a partial view of creator earnings, not a full accounting of what each streamer made.

Why did Twitch reset stream keys?
A stream key lets broadcasting software, such as OBS, send a live feed to a Twitch channel. Twitch reset all stream keys on October 7, 2021, as a precaution. That protected broadcasting access; it was separate from changing a login password.

Twitch said users of Twitch Studio, Streamlabs, Xbox, PlayStation, the Twitch mobile app, and OBS setups connected to Twitch generally did not need to take manual action. Some users running OBS without a connected Twitch account might have needed to copy the new key into their broadcasting software. The exact steps can depend on the software and current interface, so use Twitch’s official Help Center for current guidance.
What should Twitch users do now?
The 2021 incident is not evidence of a current platform-wide breach. These are sensible account-security steps for people who still use Twitch, especially if their credentials or devices have changed since then:
- Use a unique password. If your Twitch password is reused elsewhere, change it on every other service where you used it. If you suspect compromise, secure your email account and high-value financial accounts first, then update Twitch and the remaining accounts.
- Enable two-factor authentication. Use an authenticator app or passkey if currently supported by Twitch and your device. Keep recovery codes somewhere safe and separate from the account they protect. Never share a login code with someone claiming to be Twitch Support.
- Review sessions and connected apps. Look for unfamiliar sessions, third-party applications, and integrations, and revoke access you do not recognize or use.
- Check recovery and payout settings. Confirm your account email, recovery information, and creator payout details directly in your Twitch account. If payout information appears changed or you see an unauthorized transaction, contact Twitch or the relevant payment provider through an official channel.
- Protect your stream key. Do not show it in screenshots, chat, video descriptions, or public code repositories. If you see an unauthorized broadcast, stop it, regenerate the key, change your password from a clean device, secure your email, review connected apps and channel roles, and contact Twitch Support.
- Be alert for phishing. A breach can prompt fake support messages, payout notices, copyright claims, and account-recovery links. Do not use links in unexpected messages; open Twitch from a known bookmark or enter its address yourself.
If you cannot access your account or believe it is currently compromised, start at Twitch Help. Avoid third-party “account recovery” services that ask for passwords, authentication codes, or payment.
Do you need a password manager?
No paid security product is required because of this incident. A password manager can make it easier to create and store a unique password for Twitch, your email, and other accounts, and to keep recovery codes available. Free options—including device-native tools and free password-manager plans—may be enough for basic use.
A password manager does not prevent phishing, protect a compromised email account, or replace two-factor authentication. Use it as one part of account security, not a guarantee. An authenticator app can add protection without relying on SMS delivery, but plan for phone loss by keeping recovery codes securely backed up. Passkeys, where supported, can reduce phishing risk because they are tied to the legitimate site or app; check Twitch’s current account settings for availability rather than assuming the feature or menu path is unchanged.
What if you receive a message about the Twitch hack?
Do not click a link just because a message mentions the 2021 breach or claims your payout data is at risk. Open Twitch directly through a known bookmark or by entering the address yourself, then check your account and official support notices. A message citing a real historical incident can still be a phishing attempt.
