tvOS 18.1 launched on October 28, 2024 for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. It was a modest maintenance update, but it made one useful change in the Apple TV app: Apple separated Continue Watching from a new Watchlist for titles saved for later. Several headline features Apple had previewed for tvOS 18—including 21:9 projector support, the Snoopy screen saver, and robot-vacuum control in Home—were not included.
This is a historical look at tvOS 18.1, not a claim that it is the latest tvOS release in 2026. Apple has shipped later tvOS 18 updates since then.
What tvOS 18.1 changed
The update’s most visible change is inside the Apple TV app. The former Up Next area was renamed Continue Watching, while a separate Watchlist area was added. The practical distinction is straightforward:

Contemporary reports differed slightly on how Apple populated the two sections. Some described Watchlist as including selected items from Continue Watching, while others characterized it as primarily user-added content. Provider integration, region, account, and Apple TV app version can affect what appears. Treat the labels as the reliable guide: Continue Watching is for resuming; Watchlist is for saving.

Where to find Watchlist
Update the Apple TV first, then open the Apple TV app and look near the viewing-progress area for the separate Watchlist section. Apple’s layout can vary by software build, market, profile, and content provider, so a universal path such as “Library > Watchlist” should not be assumed.
When you select a saved title, the TV app may play it directly, open a purchase or rental option, or hand off to a supported streaming provider. A Watchlist entry is not a guarantee that you currently have access to the title. If a film leaves a service, its listing may remain unavailable until another provider offers it.
Apple’s published material and launch coverage did not establish identical behavior for every third-party service. Synchronization with iPhone, iPad, other Apple TV devices, profile visibility, and removal controls may therefore depend on the account and provider integration you use.

How to install tvOS 18.1
- Open Settings on Apple TV.
- Select System.
- Open Software Updates (shown as Software Update in some versions).
- Choose Update Software, then Download and Install if offered.
- Keep the Apple TV connected to power and let it restart.
Automatic Updates can install tvOS without manual action. If no update appears, the device may already be updated, the rollout may not be available in your region, or the model may be unsupported. Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K were eligible for tvOS 18.1; older models should be checked by model rather than assumed compatible.
If installation fails
- No update listed: Check the installed version, internet connection, region, and model compatibility.
- Not enough storage: Remove unused apps, restart, and retry.
- Download or installation stalls: Test the network, restart Apple TV, then return to Software Updates.
- Home-theater concern: If your Apple TV feeds a projector, receiver, or soundbar that you cannot troubleshoot immediately, update manually when you have time to test the entire HDMI and audio chain.
What else was in 18.1?
Apple described tvOS 18.1 primarily as a stability, performance, and bug-fix release rather than another major feature drop. Apple’s developer release notes list fixes including:
- A Screen Saver issue in which Portraits and Memories & Slideshows did not accurately reflect availability in Settings or the screen-saver switcher.
- A StoreKit Testing problem involving subscription-renewal offer identifiers.
- A SwiftUI issue involving
if #availablein@WidgetBundleBuilderand@SceneBuilderon earlier OS versions.
Those notes are developer-facing and are not a promise that 18.1 fixed every audio dropout, app crash, or streaming problem reported by users. The update arrived alongside iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, macOS Sequoia 15.1, watchOS 11.1, visionOS 2.1, and HomePod 18.1, but tvOS 18.1 did not add Apple Intelligence to Apple TV.

Apple announced these capabilities in its June and September 2024 materials, tvOS 18 arrived on September 16, and tvOS 18.1 followed on October 28 without all of them. Apple’s later support history lists Snoopy and ultra-widescreen support in a subsequent release. The timeline matters: “later this year” was an estimate, not a guaranteed 18.1 feature or a fixed delivery date.

The larger tvOS 18 update had already introduced or promoted features such as InSight for supported Apple TV+ programs, improved Enhance Dialogue, more automatic subtitle behavior, new screen savers, Apple Fitness+ changes, SharePlay and Apple Music improvements, FaceTime Live Captions in English in the United States and Canada, and AirPlay spatial audio in supported setups. Those are tvOS 18 features, not new 18.1 additions.
Should you install tvOS 18.1?
For most owners of a compatible Apple TV, yes. The Watchlist solves a genuine organization problem, and the update includes routine stability and security benefits. It is especially worthwhile if you regularly lose track of titles you intend to watch.

There is no reason to buy new hardware solely to obtain the Watchlist: tvOS 18.1 supported both Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. If your Apple TV is part of a sensitive projector, receiver, or accessibility setup, waiting until you can test the system is reasonable. Updating still will not unlock every feature Apple previewed for tvOS 18.
Alternatives when Apple’s list is not enough
Apple’s TV app does not expose every provider in every market uniformly. Use a service’s own watchlist when its catalog does not integrate reliably. A cross-service discovery tool such as JustWatch can be better for tracking where a title is available, while a notes or reminders list offers a provider-neutral manual fallback. These alternatives do not necessarily provide Apple TV’s one-click playback handoff, so verify current Apple TV and regional support before relying on them.

Does Watchlist require Apple TV+?
No. Watchlist is an Apple TV app feature. Access to a saved title may still require a purchase, rental, Apple TV+ subscription, or a separate participating provider.
Did tvOS 18.1 add Apple Intelligence?
No. Apple Intelligence features in the October 2024 operating-system releases applied to supported iPhone, iPad, and Mac models, not tvOS 18.1.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: tvOS 18.1 was a small but worthwhile update. Its meaningful change was the Apple TV app’s separation of Continue Watching and Watchlist; the projector, Snoopy, and robot-vacuum features Apple had previewed were still waiting for later releases.
