In Windows 11, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and switch Sticky keys on or off. You can also press Shift five times to use the shortcut, if it is enabled. Sticky Keys lets you enter modifier-key shortcuts one key at a time; in current Windows 11 Settings, the relevant section is called Accessibility, not the legacy “Ease of Access.”
Turn Sticky Keys on or off in Settings
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings. You can also select Start > Settings.
- Select Accessibility, then Keyboard.
- Find Sticky keys and switch it On or Off.
Turning on the main switch enables the feature; turning it off disables it. To open Accessibility settings directly, press Windows key + U. Windows 11 updates may arrange the additional Sticky Keys controls differently or use slightly different wording, so look within the Sticky keys section.
What Sticky Keys does
Sticky Keys changes how shortcuts that use modifier keys are entered. Normally, to save a document with Ctrl+S, you hold Ctrl while pressing S. With Sticky Keys, press and release Ctrl, then press S. It can help if holding several keys at once is difficult. It applies to shortcuts using keys such as Ctrl, Alt, Shift, and the Windows key.

Use the Shift-five-times shortcut
Microsoft lists pressing Shift five times as a keyboard shortcut for Sticky Keys. Depending on your settings, Windows may toggle the feature or show a prompt asking whether to enable it. Follow the prompt if one appears. This shortcut works only if the option that allows the keyboard shortcut has not been disabled. If it does nothing, use the Settings switch instead.
Stop the Shift-five-times prompt without disabling Sticky Keys
If you want Sticky Keys available but keep triggering it accidentally, disable its shortcut rather than turning off the feature:
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
- Open or expand the Sticky keys settings.
- Turn off the option named Keyboard shortcut for Sticky keys, Allow the shortcut key to start Sticky keys, or similar wording.
The precise label and whether it appears inline can vary by Windows 11 build and language. The important distinction is between the master Use Sticky keys switch and permission for the keyboard shortcut. Disabling the shortcut can prevent accidental activation while leaving Sticky Keys on.
Customize how Sticky Keys behaves
Additional controls may be available beneath the main switch. Their names or presentation can vary slightly, but these are the practical effects:
- Keyboard shortcut for Sticky keys: Allows or blocks the Shift-five-times shortcut.
- Show the Sticky Keys icon on the taskbar: Shows an indicator when the feature is active.
- Lock the modifier key when pressed twice in a row: Keeps a modifier active after you press it twice, which can help when a shortcut requires that key to remain engaged.
- Turn off Sticky keys when two keys are pressed at the same time: Lets a simultaneous key press cancel the one-at-a-time behavior, useful if you sometimes use conventional shortcuts.
- Play a sound when a modifier key is pressed and released: Provides audio feedback about modifier-key activity.
- Notifications or warnings: Some builds provide controls for prompts or other feedback when Sticky Keys is activated from the keyboard.
If you rely on Sticky Keys, you may prefer to keep the feature on and choose visual or audio feedback that suits you. If accidental activation is the problem, first disable the shortcut; you do not have to disable Sticky Keys itself.
Toggle it from the Accessibility flyout
The Windows Accessibility flyout can provide a quick Sticky Keys toggle. Open the flyout, move focus to Sticky keys, and press Spacebar to change its state. The flyout’s placement and available controls can vary by update or device. Use Windows key + U to reach the full Accessibility settings when you need to change the shortcut or other behavior.
If Shift five times does nothing
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Sticky keys.
- If you want to use the feature, check that Use Sticky keys is on.
- Check that the keyboard-shortcut option is also on.
- Press the same Shift key five times in quick succession and respond to any prompt.
- If you use an external keyboard, try the laptop’s built-in keyboard or another keyboard. If repeated Shift presses are not registering, check the connection, keyboard layout, or hardware.
- If the shortcut remains unavailable, use the Settings switch directly.
Shortcut behavior can differ in specialized apps, remote sessions, or other environments. Settings is the straightforward fallback.

If Sticky Keys will not turn off or a modifier seems stuck
Try the direct Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard switch first. If the shortcut is still enabled, pressing Shift five times may also toggle it. If Ctrl, Shift, Alt, or the Windows key seems to remain active, press that modifier once and test a normal shortcut. Check whether Lock the modifier key when pressed twice in a row is enabled.

A stuck or unexpected modifier is not necessarily caused by Sticky Keys. If the behavior continues, check for keyboard hardware or connection problems, remapping software, keyboard or gaming utilities, and remote-desktop behavior. Restart Windows if the displayed state seems inconsistent, then test with another keyboard if available. You can also review other keyboard accessibility settings, including Filter Keys and Toggle Keys.

These tools address different access needs. If Sticky Keys does not match the problem, Windows also offers options such as voice access; choose a feature based on the difficulty you are trying to address rather than enabling several at random.

On a shared computer, one person may need Sticky Keys while another finds the shortcut disruptive. Avoid assuming one setting suits everyone; check the current user’s preferences and, on managed devices, any support policies. In remote desktop or virtual-machine sessions, the host and guest may each have their own accessibility settings, and keyboard behavior can differ between them.
