The reliable way to turn code into a social image is to paste a short, self-contained snippet into a code-image tool, set the language and visual style, export it, and publish the image with a useful description. Keep the same code in the caption, a linked page, or both: an image is not selectable text.
Carbon and ray.so both support this workflow. Choose between them by the export format, visual controls, and whether you need saved snippets or embeds.
What a good code image must do
A code image has one job: make a small amount of code understandable at a glance. It should not be the only place the code exists. Readers who need to copy, search, run, or enlarge the snippet need a text version as well.
- Keep the example short. Show the smallest complete fragment that proves the point. If setup is essential, put the setup in the caption or on the linked page instead of shrinking a whole file into one graphic.
- Declare the language. Correct language selection gives readers familiar syntax coloring and helps them identify whether the example is JavaScript, Python, shell, or another language.
- Protect legibility. Check the longest line, indentation, punctuation, and line wrapping at the size used in the feed. A beautiful editor preview can become unreadable after a platform scales it down.
- Provide a text path. Put a copyable code block in the post when the platform permits it, or link to a page containing the exact source.

Neither tool is objectively best from these documented capabilities. Carbon is more useful when saved sharing or embeds matter; ray.so exposes a straightforward set of appearance controls. Start with the one whose export and distribution workflow matches your post.

Step-by-step: make the image
- Prepare the snippet. Remove unrelated imports, repeated boilerplate, and secrets. Keep a runnable or logically complete example where possible. For example, this short JavaScript request is long enough to be useful without filling a portrait image:

Paste the snippet, or import it when the tool offers that option. Confirm the language rather than relying on automatic detection.
- Set the visual system. Pick a theme with adequate contrast, then choose a background that separates the code from the feed. Use line numbers only when they help readers refer to a specific line; remove them when readers will copy the whole block. Adjust padding so the frame has breathing room without making the code tiny.
- Check layout at the intended reading size. Look for horizontal scrolling or unexpected wrapping. Long URLs, object literals, and nested shell commands are common trouble spots. Break a line deliberately in the source if that preserves meaning; do not let an automatic wrap split a token.
- Export the file. Carbon documents PNG and SVG export. Use PNG when the destination expects a raster upload or when you want predictable rendering; retain SVG when you need a scalable asset for later editing and the destination accepts it.
- Open the exported file before posting. Confirm that the first and last lines are present, punctuation is not clipped, and the background has not changed during export. Zoom out to the approximate feed size, then zoom in once to check small characters such as braces, quotes, and underscores.
- Write the post around the image. State what the snippet does, identify assumptions, and give readers the copyable version or a source link. A graphic should support the explanation, not replace it.
Make the post accessible and reusable
Social platforms treat the image as a visual asset, so add an image description. X recommends a clear, concise description that writes out or summarizes important text shown in the image; its current help guidance gives image descriptions a 1,000-character limit. See the X image-description guidance. LinkedIn lets authors add alternative text to images shared in feeds or articles; its instructions are in LinkedIn’s alternative-text help.
Describe the purpose and the meaningful code, not just “screenshot of code.” For the JavaScript example above, a concise description could be: “JavaScript fetches /api/health, parses the JSON response, and logs the returned version when status.ok is true.” If a particular string, command, or output is central to the post, include it in the description or summarize it accurately.
Keep a real text copy beside the image. GitHub’s screenshot guidance advises against using screenshots merely to show commands or outputs when text alone is clear, and says screenshots should have complete instructions and alt text. The same principle works for social posts: use the image for visual emphasis and the caption or linked page for usable code.
Write a caption that gives the image context
- Lead with the outcome: “This health check returns the deployed version only when the service reports OK.”
- State prerequisites: mention the runtime, endpoint, dependency, or authentication assumption that is not visible in the image.
- Call out a trap: explain an error case, security consideration, or reason for choosing this pattern.
- Link the source: point to a repository, documentation page, or gist containing copyable code.
- Keep the image description separate: the caption can explain why the snippet matters; alt text should describe what is visibly represented.
Do not promise a reach or engagement increase. The documented sources establish creation and accessibility practices, not a numerical performance benefit.
When PNG, SVG, or an embed makes sense
PNG for predictable social uploads
PNG is a practical default for a feed post because it is a raster file that most uploaders accept. Inspect the actual exported pixels and ensure the text remains readable after the platform displays it at feed width.

SVG for scalable downstream work
SVG keeps vector geometry and can remain sharp when you resize it in a design workflow. A social service may rasterize it or reject it, however, so check the current upload rules for the destination before relying on SVG.
Embeds or saved snippets for ongoing reuse
Carbon documents saved snippets and embeds. Use those when the same example will appear in documentation, a website, or multiple posts and you want a maintained path back to the source instead of a collection of unrelated flattened files.

The code is too small to read
Shorten the snippet, remove decorative controls, increase padding only after the text is large enough, and split a long example into a series. Never solve a dense layout by shrinking the font until punctuation disappears.
Lines wrap in the exported image
Find the longest line and either refactor it into named variables or make a deliberate line break. Check strings, URLs, and shell commands after the change so the example still means the same thing.
Syntax colors look wrong
Set the language explicitly. Automatic detection can interpret a short snippet incorrectly, especially when it contains plain text, JSON-like objects, or shell flags.

The image looks fine locally but fails on the platform
Export a PNG, reopen it, and verify that the file is complete. If you use SVG, test whether the destination accepts it or converts it. Because platform dimensions and upload limits change, verify the destination’s current requirements when you prepare the post rather than relying on a fixed pixel rule.
Readers cannot copy the code
That is expected from a flattened image. Add the code as text in the post when supported, or link to the canonical source. Do not ask readers to transcribe punctuation from a graphic.
The snippet exposes a secret
Stop before publishing and revoke or rotate the credential if it was real. Replace tokens, private URLs, personal data, and internal identifiers with clearly marked placeholders, then re-export and inspect the image and text version separately.
The alt-text field is missing or too short
Use the platform’s image-description or alternative-text control rather than hiding the explanation in a comment. Summarize the purpose and the important visible code; link to the complete source for details that do not fit.

Usually no. A sequence of focused images or one concise excerpt is easier to read. Keep the complete file in a linked, copyable source and explain which part the image highlights.
