The footage comes from Adin Ross’s August 5, 2024 livestream with Donald Trump—not a Tesla launch or formal campaign event. Trump sat inside a custom-wrapped Cybertruck, praised Tesla CEO Elon Musk and the vehicle’s sound system, danced stiffly to music, and discussed TikTok. The video shows Trump performing enthusiasm on camera; it cannot prove what he privately thought about the truck.
What footage is the headline referring to?
The clip shows Trump sitting in a Tesla Cybertruck during a livestream hosted by streamer Adin Ross. In the footage, Trump looks toward the camera and addresses Musk, saying, Wow, that’s an Elon!
He also says, Elon you’re great. I don’t know if you’re seeing this, but you’re really good.
The interaction took place on August 5, 2024, during Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. The original coverage was published the following day by Futurism, which referenced clips posted online, including this August 5 social-media post.
This was an informal influencer livestream rather than a product review, political rally, or official Tesla event. That setting is important: the scene was built around personality, spectacle, and shareable moments—not detailed discussion of electric vehicles.

What happened inside the Cybertruck?
Ross presented Trump with a custom-wrapped Cybertruck featuring an image associated with the July 2024 assassination attempt against Trump. He also presented Trump with a Rolex watch. The available reporting establishes that the items were publicly presented; it does not establish that Trump personally retained the vehicle or legally accepted it as his personal property.
Inside the truck, Trump praised Musk and complimented the vehicle’s audio system. Ross played music, including California Dreamin’ by The Mamas & the Papas, according to the account. Trump then performed a stiff side-to-side dance that quickly became the most mocked part of the clip.
Trump also discussed TikTok, saying he intended to keep the platform operating and criticizing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for what he characterized as a lack of understanding of it.
Why did the moment look so awkward?
The awkwardness is partly a matter of taste, but several visible details explain why the clip attracted criticism:
- Trump delivered exaggerated praise to Musk, who was not visibly participating in the immediate exchange.
- The scene combined a presidential candidate, a young livestream celebrity, a conspicuous luxury gift, and a vehicle closely associated with Musk.
- The music and stiff dance made the exchange look more like a viral performance than a substantive political conversation.
- Trump’s enthusiastic comments contrasted with his earlier public criticism of electric vehicles and policies intended to encourage their adoption.
Calling the performance “awkward” is an interpretation of the footage. Calling it proof that Trump was definitely pretending to like the Cybertruck goes further than the evidence allows.

Who is Adin Ross, and why did Trump appear with him?
Adin Ross is a prominent livestreamer with a large, predominantly young and male online audience. His broadcasts are informal and personality-driven, making them very different from a conventional television interview or campaign town hall.
For a presidential campaign, appearing with an influencer can provide access to audiences that may not follow traditional political media. The setting also encourages short clips that can circulate widely on social platforms. That does not prove the appearance was aimed exclusively at young men, but it helps explain why the format was politically useful.
Ross’s public profile has sometimes prompted strongly worded descriptions from commentators. Those labels should not be repeated as established fact without separate, reliable sourcing. The relevant point here is his role as a major online streamer and host of the broadcast.
Why was Trump suddenly praising electric vehicles?
The Cybertruck scene followed Trump’s statement that he had become supportive of electric cars because Musk had endorsed him strongly. That created a sharp contrast with Trump’s earlier rhetoric, which was frequently skeptical or hostile toward electric vehicles, EV mandates, and policies encouraging their adoption.
The timing made Trump’s praise politically significant. Musk had publicly aligned himself with Trump, and Trump was now praising Musk, Tesla, and an electric vehicle in front of a large online audience.

That does not establish that Trump changed his private views, nor does it prove that his comments were insincere. It does show that his public messaging about EVs had become more favorable after Musk’s political support became important to his campaign.

What was Musk’s political role?
Musk’s endorsement was central background to the livestream. Contemporary reporting also discussed a Wall Street Journal report that Musk planned to donate $45 million per month to America PAC. Musk denied that specific report, so it should not be presented as an established monthly payment stream.
The safer conclusion is that Musk’s public support made Trump’s praise of Tesla and electric vehicles politically salient. The Cybertruck was not just a vehicle in the clip; it was also a visible symbol of Trump’s relationship with one of the most influential business figures supporting his campaign.

The gifts raised a separate legal question. The original reporting cited the then-applicable federal individual contribution limit of $3,300 and commentary from a campaign-finance expert who said gifts worth tens of thousands of dollars could potentially constitute excessive contributions if they were treated as gifts to a candidate.
That is a potential compliance issue—not a finding that Trump or Ross violated campaign-finance law.

Several facts would matter in determining the legal treatment:
- Whether Trump personally accepted the items or merely received them in a public presentation.
- Whether the Cybertruck was later returned, donated, transferred to a campaign entity, or retained by someone else.
- How the customized vehicle was valued, including the underlying vehicle and the cost of the wrap.
- Whether the recipient was Trump personally, his campaign, a political committee, or another organization.
- How the Rolex was valued and documented.
A publicly televised handoff is not automatically proof of personal ownership, and the available account does not establish an adjudicated campaign-finance violation.
Did Trump actually like the Cybertruck?
The evidence is best separated into three levels:

So the most accurate answer is: Trump visibly acted enthusiastic about the Cybertruck, but the video does not prove whether he genuinely liked it or was pretending.
What the clip proves—and what it does not
It proves: Trump appeared in Ross’s August 5, 2024 livestream; Ross publicly presented a custom-wrapped Cybertruck and Rolex; Trump praised Musk and the truck; music played; Trump danced; and he discussed TikTok and his changing public position on electric cars.

It does not prove: that Trump personally kept the Cybertruck, that the vehicle was officially produced or endorsed by Tesla in that customized form, that Musk made the reported $45 million monthly donations, or that Trump violated campaign-finance law.
Most importantly, it does not prove a private mental state. “Pretending to like” is a fair description of how critics interpreted the performance, but it remains commentary rather than a verified fact.
The clip became notable because it compressed several political and media trends into one strange scene: influencer campaigning, Tesla branding, Musk’s support for Trump, a conspicuous gift, and a sudden shift in Trump’s public language about electric vehicles.
