Donald Trump said on September 21, 2025, that Lachlan Murdoch was involved in a proposed investor group for TikTok’s U.S. operations and that Rupert Murdoch would “probably” join it. That was a description of a potential deal, not confirmation that either Murdoch invested. The U.S. joint venture later finalized on January 22, 2026, with Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX as its three named managing investors; public reports on the closing did not name the Murdochs or Fox Corporation among the owners.
What Trump said about the Murdochs and TikTok
In a Fox News interview broadcast Sunday, September 21, 2025, Trump named Lachlan Murdoch as a participant in a possible investor group for TikTok’s U.S. operations. He said Rupert Murdoch would “probably” be involved, and also named Oracle executive chairman Larry Ellison and Dell Technologies founder Michael Dell. Contemporary reporting treated the names as part of a developing proposal, not a finalized investor roster.
The distinction matters: Trump’s statement confirms what he said, but it does not establish that the people he named signed an investment agreement or became owners. The three useful evidence levels are: Trump publicly named the Murdochs; news reports described their possible participation; and the final deal reports do not establish that either man or Fox Corporation joined the ownership group.
Fox Corporation is not News Corp—and neither is a personal investment
Rupert Murdoch is associated with both Fox Corporation and News Corp. Lachlan Murdoch is executive chairman of Fox Corporation and executive chairman of News Corp. Those are separate public companies with different businesses: Fox operates television and other media assets, while News Corp owns publications including The Wall Street Journal and The New York Post.

Reporting in September said any Murdoch-related investment might be made through Fox Corporation, rather than by Rupert or Lachlan personally or through News Corp. That was a report about a possible route, not evidence that Fox made the investment. Saying “the Murdochs bought TikTok” would therefore overstate both what Trump said and what the reporting confirmed.
Why TikTok’s U.S. business was being restructured
The proposed transaction grew out of the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, enacted in 2024. It required ByteDance to divest TikTok’s U.S. operations or face restrictions in the United States. The dispute centered on the risks the U.S. government associated with Chinese ownership and access to data, as well as who could control the recommendation system. Trump repeatedly delayed enforcement while a deal was negotiated.

The plan was not a straightforward purchase of all of TikTok worldwide. It aimed to move U.S. operations into a new joint venture while keeping the service available in the country. The White House’s September description envisaged a board with six of seven seats controlled by Americans and gave Oracle a role in U.S. data security. Those were descriptions of the proposal; they should not be mistaken for a complete account of the final contract.

During negotiations, reports described a consortium that could include Oracle, Silver Lake and prominent investors Trump had named. They also raised questions about how the U.S. version would use TikTok’s recommendation algorithm—whether it would be licensed, retrained or otherwise separated and secured. The exact investor percentages and full roster were not settled publicly at the time. A reported valuation of roughly $14 billion was also discussed, but it should not be treated as a confirmed final transaction price.

The transaction ultimately closed on January 22, 2026, creating TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC. Reports on the closing named Oracle, Silver Lake and Abu Dhabi-based MGX as managing investors, with each holding 15%. ByteDance retained 19.9%; the remaining ownership was distributed among other investors, including Michael Dell’s family office and investment firms. The Washington Post’s closing report and the Associated Press described the final entity and ownership structure.
| Stage | What was publicly described | What that does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| September 2025 proposal | Trump named Lachlan Murdoch, Rupert Murdoch, Larry Ellison and Michael Dell as possible participants. | Evidence of Trump’s claim and the proposed group, not proof of a signed investment. |
| January 2026 closing | Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX each held 15%; ByteDance held 19.9%, with other investors holding the balance. | The public closing reports reviewed named other investors but did not identify the Murdochs or Fox Corporation as owners. |
Did the Murdochs actually invest?
The careful answer is that the public reports reviewed for the January 2026 closing do not name Rupert Murdoch, Lachlan Murdoch or Fox Corporation among the disclosed owners. That is not the same as definitive proof that none had any direct or indirect participation; a public report’s omission is weaker evidence than a complete ownership filing or a company statement. The available evidence supports calling them proposed or rumored participants, not confirmed final investors.

What changed for TikTok users—and what remains distinct
The U.S. business moved into a majority-owned joint venture, but that does not mean ByteDance disappeared from the arrangement: it retained a 19.9% stake. Nor does “U.S.-owned” by itself answer who controls every technical or commercial function. Ownership, custody of U.S. user data, algorithm security and licensing, content moderation, advertising and commerce are separate questions.
Reporting on the final arrangement described the new venture as taking responsibility for U.S. data, content and algorithm functions while ByteDance retained ownership of TikTok’s U.S. business operations. That makes “TikTok was completely sold” too simple a description. For users, the central practical aim was continuity of service under a revised governance and security structure. Whether oversight changes how recommendations or moderation work is a separate question; an ownership announcement alone does not demonstrate a change in users’ feeds or political content.

Why investor identity raised political questions
A major platform’s owners can have commercial and governance influence, so a proposed investment by a prominent media company naturally raised questions about conflicts and safeguards: who would oversee content moderation, how would recommendation policies be governed, and how could commercial ownership be separated from editorial interests? Those questions are especially salient when investors also have interests in media or political relationships. They are questions about governance, not proof that an investor would direct TikTok’s coverage or recommendations.
Trump later rejected the suggestion that the U.S. version would favor MAGA or conservative content, but that assurance is not the same as independent evidence about how the recommendation system operates. The ownership structure and oversight arrangements can inform scrutiny; they do not, by themselves, establish political bias or its absence.
The national-security case also remains distinct from the investor roster. Deal proponents presented the joint venture as a way to address concerns about foreign control and U.S. data while preserving the app. ByteDance’s continuing minority stake and the separation of ownership from data and algorithm responsibilities are why “the deal solved every security concern” is stronger than the available facts warrant.
