Start with the HTTP status and response body—not a longer wait. Screenshot APIs may return JSON errors even when your client expects an image, and the status often tells you whether to fix authentication, request parameters, rendering timing, rate limits, or a temporary service problem. Once the response is understood, adjust only the relevant part of the request.
Diagnose the response before changing the capture
Record the HTTP status and Content-Type, then inspect the response body. A file named capture.png can contain JSON describing an error rather than image data. ScreenshotEngine recommends checking the status and the error, message, and details fields; Screenshot API documents stable codes including unauthorized, invalid_request, rate_limited, quota_exceeded, render_failed, and selector_not_found (ScreenshotEngine error guidance; Screenshot API documentation).
- 401 or an unauthorized code: check the API key, authentication header or parameter, and account access. Do not retry unchanged invalid credentials.
- 400 or invalid request: validate the URL and parameter names, and check that options are supported together.
- 429: the request is being rate limited or may have exhausted a quota. Check response headers and the error body to distinguish the two.
- 500 or render_failed: the provider encountered a rendering failure; capture the request ID and details before making a bounded retry.
- 503: treat it as potentially temporary, but honor any retry guidance and keep attempts limited.
Before opening the image, log the request ID if supplied, status, content type, target URL, non-secret options, and approximate request time. Never put an API key, session cookie, or authorization value in logs or a support ticket.

Most blank or partial captures of modern sites are timing problems: the screenshot is taken before client-side JavaScript finishes rendering the content. Cloudflare notes that default page-load behavior can return empty or incomplete results for JavaScript-heavy pages and single-page applications; RenderScreenshot describes the common cause as capture occurring before the page has finished loading (Cloudflare Browser Rendering documentation; RenderScreenshot documentation).

Wait for network activity to settle
Use the provider’s network-idle or equivalent load condition when the page’s essential content appears after scripts and API requests complete. Depending on the API, the option may be named waitUntil, networkidle, networkidle0, or networkidle2. These labels and semantics vary by provider, so use the exact option documented by the service rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
Wait for the actual content, not just the page event
For a known component, a selector wait is often more reliable than waiting for every network request to stop. Ask the browser to wait for a selector that appears only when the content you need is rendered, such as [data-loaded="true"]. Confirm the selector is valid on the rendered page and does not match an unrelated placeholder. Cloudflare documents waitForSelector for this purpose.
Use a short delay only for known late UI
A fixed delay can help when a page reveals a specific element after a predictable animation or client-side task, but it is a blunt fallback. It wastes time on fast pages and can still be too short on slow ones. Keep delays bounded; Cloudflare documents a maximum of 120,000 ms for its Browser Rendering waitForTimeout action. That ceiling applies to that product’s action, not to every screenshot API.

The right condition is the earliest one that proves the intended content is ready.

Check URL validity and access restrictions
Send a complete public http:// or https:// URL in the field and format the API expects. Malformed URLs, localhost, private-network addresses, and destinations blocked by provider policy commonly fail validation rather than rendering. Screenshot vendors differ in their rules for private or internal addresses; consult the vendor’s URL policy before trying to capture an intranet page.
If the capture shows a sign-in page, the browser has reached the site but lacks an authenticated session. More waiting will not log it in. Supply the target site’s cookies, authorization headers, or supported HTTP-auth credentials using the API’s documented options. Treat those values as secrets, use only accounts and pages you are authorized to access, and avoid placing credentials in source code or logs.
Fix selector and full-page capture failures
When an element selector is not found
A selector_not_found response usually means the selector does not exist at capture time, is submitted under the wrong field name, or the API searched before the page rendered it. Check the selector against the live DOM, use the correct GET or POST parameter name for the vendor, and wait for the element if it is created asynchronously. If the target is inside a frame or shadow DOM, confirm the provider supports selecting it there; ordinary CSS selector support does not establish support for every DOM context.
A missing selector is not a transient failure to retry indefinitely. Correct the selector or timing condition, then make a new request.

When full-page output is cut off or unusually large
Full-page capture depends on how the provider scrolls, lays out, and stitches the page. Lazy-loaded images may not exist until their sections are brought into view, while very long pages can consume more time and memory than a viewport capture. Check whether the API has a dedicated full-page option and whether it loads lazy content. If only one panel or chart is needed, an element capture can reduce page work and avoid irrelevant content.
Handle timeouts, rate limits, and retries safely
Timeouts and heavy pages
Large images, video, web fonts, trackers, and complex scripts can slow rendering. If the API supports it, block nonessential resource types or specific requests, and consider a simpler load condition where it will still produce the content you need. Keep both the browser timeout and client timeout bounded, and distinguish a slow page from a request that never reached the renderer.
A client timeout does not prove the capture failed. ScreenshotEngine warns that a client can time out after a capture succeeds, so an immediate retry may generate another successful request that counts toward usage (ScreenshotEngine error guidance). Where supported, use a request identifier or idempotency mechanism to determine whether a timed-out job completed before resubmitting.
429 and 503 responses
For a 429 or temporary 503, honor Retry-After when present, reduce concurrent requests, add jitter to retry delays, and cap the number of attempts. If no retry delay is provided, use a bounded backoff rather than a tight loop. A 429 caused by monthly quota exhaustion is not repaired by waiting a few seconds; check the quota details, wait for the reset, or change the plan. Do not retry invalid parameters, invalid credentials, or confirmed quota exhaustion automatically.

Example: bounded retry logic
The following Python pattern is deliberately limited. Adapt the status and quota checks to the specific provider’s documented error schema. It retries only 429 and 503 responses, honors a numeric Retry-After value, and stops after four total attempts.

time.sleep(delay)This example assumes a numeric retry delay. If a provider sends an HTTP-date in Retry-After, parse that format according to HTTP rules. Also inspect the response body before treating every 429 as temporary: quota exhaustion may require a different action.
What to compare when choosing a screenshot API
If recurring failures expose a gap in the service rather than your request, compare the controls that affect your specific workflow. Do not evaluate only whether a provider can return a PNG once.

Escalate a reproducible failure
If the request still fails after correcting the cause indicated by the response, send the provider a compact diagnostic record:

- Request ID, HTTP status, and response body
- Target URL and approximate request time
- Request method and non-secret parameters, including wait and selector settings
- Relevant response headers, especially retry or rate-limit information
- Whether the same URL loads normally in an authenticated browser, if that is relevant
Remove API keys, cookies, authorization headers, and other secrets first. A minimal reproducible request helps support distinguish a vendor-side rendering issue from an invalid URL, expired session, or capture configuration problem.

Should I save an API error response as a PNG?
No. Check the status and content type, then read the body; a response with an image filename may actually be JSON describing an error.
Is network idle always the best wait condition?
No. For pages with permanently active requests, wait for a selector that proves the required content is ready or use a supported earlier load condition.
Can I retry a timed-out screenshot request safely?
Not necessarily. The remote capture may have succeeded even if your client timed out, so check for a request or job result before resubmitting when the provider supports it.
