If QuickBooks Desktop stopped launching after a Windows 10 update, do not uninstall it or roll back Windows first. Restart Windows, run Quick Fix my Program from Intuit’s QuickBooks Tool Hub, then determine whether the failure affects QuickBooks itself or only the company file. If needed, continue with the Install Diagnostic Tool, a repair, and finally a reinstall. Back up your company file before making changes.
Also check your product year: Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft support on October 14, 2025, and Intuit discontinued QuickBooks Desktop 2023 after May 31, 2026. An older installation may be repairable, but it may no longer be a supported long-term setup.
Before troubleshooting
- Restart the computer and allow any pending Windows update to finish.
- Do not delete, overwrite, or move the original
.QBWcompany file. - If the file is available from another computer, create a verified backup first.
- Record your QuickBooks year, edition, release number, Windows version/build, and exact error message.
- Do not repeatedly double-click the QuickBooks icon. Multiple startup attempts can interfere with loading; allow the program time to respond.
Intuit lists damaged program files, a damaged or missing QBWUSER.INI file, hard-drive problems, Windows damage, and company-file issues as possible causes. The timing after Windows Update does not prove that the update itself caused the failure.

1. Run Quick Fix my Program
Quick Fix is Intuit’s recommended first repair for a QuickBooks startup problem. It closes QuickBooks background processes and performs a quick program repair. It does not rebuild or repair your accounting data.

- Close QuickBooks.
- Download the official QuickBooks Tool Hub from Intuit.
- Run
QuickBooksToolHub.exeand complete the installation. - Open QuickBooks Tool Hub.
- Select Program Problems and then Quick Fix my Program.
- Start QuickBooks Desktop and test the company file.
Intuit’s current startup instructions list Tool Hub version 1.6.0.8. If the utility will not install, download it again with another browser, confirm that the file came from an Intuit domain, install pending Windows updates, and restart. Do not disable Windows Security indiscriminately. If Defender blocks a genuinely official download, verify its origin before using its permitted “More info” or “Run anyway” option.

2. Test QuickBooks separately from the company file
If QuickBooks reaches the No Company Open screen, the application itself is probably starting. The remaining problem may be the company file, its folder, permissions, or the previous startup state.
Open the file with windows closed
- Open QuickBooks and go to No Company Open.
- Select the company file.
- Hold
ALTwhile selecting Open. - Keep holding
ALTuntil the file opens. - If QuickBooks requests a password, release
ALT, enter the password, then holdALTagain while selecting OK.
Suppress the normal startup state
- Hold
CTRL. - Double-click the QuickBooks Desktop icon.
- Continue holding
CTRLuntil No Company Open appears, QuickBooks freezes, or an error appears. - Select the company file and choose Open.
If QuickBooks cannot reach either screen, focus on the installation, user configuration, Windows components, or compatibility rather than the company file.
3. Test a sample company and a local copy
Try opening a sample company file. If the sample opens but your real file does not, the problem is more likely related to the real file, its folder, or access permissions.

Make a copy of the company file and test that copy in a simple local folder on the affected PC. Do not initially test from a mapped drive, USB drive, cloud-sync folder, or network location.
- Local copy opens: investigate the server, network path, folder permissions, mapped drive, and database service.
- Sample opens but local copy does not: the company file or its data folder may be damaged. Preserve the original and consider restoring an earlier verified backup.
- Neither sample nor real file opens: return to program, installation, and Windows troubleshooting.
A local test is diagnostic, not necessarily a permanent solution for a multi-user setup. Do not run file-repair tools before creating a backup.

4. Run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool
- Open QuickBooks Tool Hub.
- Select Installation Issues.
- Select QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool.
- Allow it to finish. Intuit says the process can take up to 20 minutes.
- Restart Windows.
- Test QuickBooks again.
This tool addresses Microsoft components used by QuickBooks. It is safer than manually deleting .NET, Visual C++, program folders, or registry entries.
5. Rename the QuickBooks user-configuration file
A damaged user configuration can make QuickBooks start inconsistently or crash during startup. Rename the file instead of deleting it.
Typical location:
C:Users<YourUserName>AppDataLocalIntuitQuickBooks <year>- Enable hidden files in File Explorer if necessary.
- Open the folder for your QuickBooks year.
- Right-click
QBWUSER.INIand select Rename. - Rename it to
QBWUSER.ini.old. - Reopen QuickBooks and manually select the company file if necessary.
If the issue continues, Intuit’s troubleshooting guidance also refers to renaming EntitlementDataStore.ecml. Rename it only as part of that troubleshooting flow.

Do not confuse these files: QBWUSER.INI stores user-interface and startup configuration; .QBW is the company data file; .TLG is a transaction log; .ND is a network configuration file; and EntitlementDataStore.ecml stores licensing or entitlement information. Do not casually delete the data files.
6. Check .NET Framework and Windows compatibility
Intuit’s Windows 10 guidance recommends checking whether .NET Framework 3.5 is enabled. Some Windows 10 installations do not enable it by default.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
Control Paneland press Enter. - Select Uninstall a Program.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Enable the relevant .NET Framework 3.5 feature and confirm the change.
- Restart Windows.
Feature names can vary slightly between Windows 10 builds. Use Windows Features and Intuit’s diagnostic tools rather than downloading random .NET installers or editing the registry.
Run Microsoft’s compatibility troubleshooter
Use this after QuickBooks-specific repairs, not instead of them. On newer Windows menus, go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter, and select Run. Older Windows 10 builds may use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
Microsoft notes that application failures after an operating-system upgrade can result from changed architecture, security features, or system requirements. Also install available device-driver updates through Windows Update, especially if QuickBooks crashes when printing, creating PDFs, emailing, or using peripherals. 7. Repair the QuickBooks installation
Repair is preferable to uninstalling when the product is installed but its program files may have been damaged.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features or Uninstall a program.
- Select your installed QuickBooks Desktop edition.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair and complete the prompts.
- Restart Windows and test QuickBooks.
Labels vary by QuickBooks release and Windows configuration. Follow Intuit’s repair instructions for your specific year and edition. Repair replaces damaged installation files, but it will not fix an unsupported product, a corrupted Windows profile, network permissions, or a damaged company file.
8. Reinstall QuickBooks Desktop only if necessary
Reinstalling is the final application-level step. It can replace files left damaged by a failed update, but it does not repair a damaged .QBW file.
Before uninstalling, confirm that you have:
- A backup of the company file and any related documents.
- The correct product year and edition, such as Pro, Premier, Accountant, or Enterprise.
- Your license, product number, Intuit account, and installer.
- Any multi-user, hosting, payroll, payment, or network configuration details.
Reinstalling an obsolete release may expose activation or subscription problems and may not restore connected services. Download only from Intuit and do not delete company-data folders during removal.

Find the installed versions
If QuickBooks opens, press F2 or Ctrl+1 to open Product Information. Record the product year, edition, release number, and 32-bit or 64-bit information if shown. If it will not open, check the original installer, Intuit account, license records, or another PC using the same product.

To check Windows 10, open Start, type About your PC, select it, and review the Windows specifications and version information.
Windows 10 is now a legacy platform
Microsoft ended ordinary Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Some QuickBooks Desktop releases may still install or run on Windows 10, but compatibility is specific to the QuickBooks year and edition. For example, Intuit’s QuickBooks Desktop 2024 requirements list 64-bit Windows, an x86 Intel or AMD processor, at least 2.4 GHz, 8 GB RAM minimum, and 2.5 GB application storage. The page lists Windows 11 and supported Windows Server versions as supported operating systems while noting that QuickBooks 2024 can currently be installed on Windows 10. Treat that as a compatibility warning, not proof that every release is officially supported on Windows 10.
QuickBooks Desktop 2024 also does not support ARM processors, emulation, virtualization, Linux, or Windows 10 S Mode. Check Intuit’s requirements for your exact release.

QuickBooks Desktop 2023 was discontinued
Intuit discontinued QuickBooks Desktop 2023 products after May 31, 2026. Discontinued versions lose live technical support and may lose services such as payroll, payments, and online banking, as well as critical security updates. A discontinued desktop application may still behave differently depending on its installation, but it is not a dependable supported configuration. A “subscription required” message can indicate an expired subscription or an unsupported release rather than a Windows startup fault. See Intuit’s service discontinuation policy.
When Windows rollback is appropriate
Do not roll back Windows as the default fix. Consider it only when QuickBooks worked immediately before a specific update, Intuit or Microsoft identifies a confirmed compatibility defect, the repair sequence has failed, and you have a current backup and recovery plan. Rollback can reintroduce security vulnerabilities.
For a durable fix, evaluate a supported Windows version or a compatible PC, but first confirm QuickBooks, printers, drivers, integrations, and multi-user workflows. Upgrading Windows is not guaranteed to solve every QuickBooks problem.

- Repair QuickBooks.
- Reinstall only after confirming your installer, license, backup, and product support status.
