The right fix depends on what you’re connecting. Joining the Echo Show to Wi-Fi, pairing Bluetooth headphones, and adding a Matter light or camera use different setup paths. First identify the connection type, then work through the least disruptive checks before removing devices or resetting anything.
First, identify what is not connecting
| What you’re connecting | Connection method | Start by checking |
|---|---|---|
| The Echo Show itself | Wi-Fi and Amazon account | Network, password, setup status, and account |
| A phone or tablet | Alexa app, account, and sometimes Bluetooth or local-network access | App permissions, account, and network |
| Speaker or headphones | Bluetooth | Pairing mode, range, and existing connections |
| Plug, bulb, lock, thermostat, or camera | Alexa skill, Matter, Zigbee, Thread, or a manufacturer hub | Compatibility, setup in the manufacturer app, and required hub |
| Another entertainment device | Often account, Wi-Fi, and device or app linking | Same account, network, and current software |
“Echo Show” covers many models and generations. Features such as Zigbee hubs, Thread Border Router support, and Matter compatibility are model-specific; check Amazon’s Matter compatibility information, Zigbee device list, and Thread support list for the exact model.
Do these quick checks before changing settings
- Connect the Echo Show to its supplied power adapter. Make sure the target device is powered and, where applicable, in setup or pairing mode.
- Confirm the Alexa app is signed in to the Amazon account used to set up the Echo Show. A used device or accessory may still be registered to someone else.
- Update the Alexa app if an update is available. In your phone’s settings, allow the app the permissions needed for the setup: Bluetooth, local-network access, camera for QR scanning, and location where the operating system requires it.
- For a smart-home accessory, first see whether it works in its manufacturer’s app. If not, solve that setup problem before trying Alexa.
- Keep the phone and target device near the Echo Show during setup. For Wi-Fi troubleshooting, Amazon recommends keeping the Echo within 30 feet (10 meters) of the router; treat that as troubleshooting guidance, not a universal range guarantee.
- Check whether the phone and Echo Show are on the intended home network. Guest networks, client isolation, parental controls, MAC filtering, and some mesh-network settings can prevent devices from discovering one another even when they can reach the internet.
If the Echo Show will not connect to Wi-Fi
- Test the network with another device. If a phone or computer also cannot use the same Wi-Fi, investigate the router or internet connection first. If other devices work, focus on the Echo Show’s saved network details or signal.
- Check the password and recent changes. Re-enter the password carefully. If the router password or network name changed, update the Echo Show’s Wi-Fi details.
- Restart the Echo Show. Unplug its power adapter, wait briefly, then reconnect it. Also restart the router and modem if other devices have connection trouble.
- Move the Echo closer to the router. Walls, distance, and interference from electronics such as microwaves or baby monitors can weaken Wi-Fi. Temporarily reduce interference and avoid a crowded or marginal location.
- Try the other Wi-Fi band if available. If your router presents separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, try the other one. Do not assume every Echo Show requires 2.4 GHz; Wi-Fi capabilities differ by model. See Amazon’s model-specific Echo Show specifications.
- Check router restrictions. Guest Wi-Fi, captive portals, enterprise sign-in, device limits, access controls, and client isolation can interfere with setup or local discovery. If you use mesh Wi-Fi, check that the phone, Echo, and accessory are not separated by a network or isolation rule.
- Reset only if the simpler steps fail. Amazon recommends a reset as an escalation for persistent connection problems, but a factory reset means setting up the Echo Show again. Follow instructions for your exact model rather than guessing a button combination.
Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking another device, reducing interference, testing an alternate band where available, and updating Wi-Fi details after a password change.

If the Alexa app cannot find the Echo Show
Check that the phone is signed in to the same Amazon account as the Echo Show and that the Show is in setup mode if it has not yet been configured. Enable the Alexa app’s Bluetooth, camera, and local-network permissions as needed. If the Show is already listed in the app but appears offline, confirm it has working Wi-Fi before trying to add it again.
#1 Best Overall
- Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.

If setup still fails, force-close and reopen the Alexa app, restart the phone and Echo Show, and retry on the home network rather than a guest network. A stale device entry or an account mismatch can make the app appear to be searching for a device that is already registered elsewhere.
If a Bluetooth speaker or headphones will not pair
- Put the speaker, headphones, or phone into Bluetooth pairing or discoverable mode. Simply turning it on may not make it visible.
- Disconnect it from any phone, TV, computer, or tablet it has paired with before; some accessories will not accept another connection while occupied.
- Bring it close to the Echo Show, then start pairing again. If an old pairing is saved, remove or forget it and retry.
- Restart both devices and attempt one pairing at a time.
- Check the target’s supported Bluetooth audio profile and the capabilities of your exact Echo Show model. Amazon’s specifications list Bluetooth details for documented models, but they should not be generalized to every generation.
A Bluetooth audio connection does not turn a speaker or headphone set into an Alexa smart-home device. A paired speaker can provide audio output, but that does not guarantee Alexa can control it as a plug, light, or other smart-home accessory.

If a smart-home device will not appear or respond
For devices connected through a manufacturer’s Alexa skill
- Install the manufacturer’s app and finish setting up the device there, including its Wi-Fi connection if required.
- In the Alexa app, enable the manufacturer’s skill and link the correct manufacturer account. If authorization expired or the wrong account was linked, sign in again.
- Run device discovery after the manufacturer setup is complete. App labels can change, but look in the Alexa app’s Devices area for an option to add or discover devices.
- Assign a room and use a distinct name. Duplicate or vague names such as “Light” can make voice commands ambiguous.
- If the accessory works in its own app but not Alexa, check whether its skill is available in your country and whether the manufacturer’s service is operating. Some products require a manufacturer hub.
Alexa-compatible products can connect by several routes, including manufacturer cloud services, skills, and supported hubs or local protocols. The Works with Alexa program information describes these integration routes; compatibility is not the same as support for every Echo Show model.

For Matter devices
Matter setup is commissioning, not ordinary Bluetooth audio pairing. In Amazon’s documented example, open the Alexa app and go to Devices → + → Add Device → Other → Matter, then scan the device’s QR code and follow the prompts to select Wi-Fi. Labels can vary by app version, platform, location, and product category; use the closest current equivalent if they differ.

- Use the QR code or numeric setup code supplied with the device, and allow camera access if scanning.
- Keep the phone and device close during setup. Alexa uses Bluetooth Low Energy to pass Wi-Fi or Thread credentials to the Matter device.
- Verify that the exact Echo Show model supports the setup you need. Not every Echo Show is a Thread Border Router, and Matter support does not mean every device category or network arrangement is supported.
- If the device was already commissioned to another platform, use its supported Matter Multi-Admin process or reset it according to the manufacturer’s instructions before trying again.
Amazon’s live Matter support page lists supported Echo models and device categories. Check it for current, generation-specific compatibility rather than relying on the product name alone.
For Zigbee devices
Zigbee accessories need a compatible Zigbee hub. Only selected Echo models, including some Echo Show generations, have one built in. Put the accessory into its discovery or pairing mode and check the current Zigbee-capable Echo list. If your Echo Show is not on it, use a compatible hub or another manufacturer-supported connection route.

For Thread devices
Thread is neither Wi-Fi nor Bluetooth. A Thread accessory generally needs a Thread Border Router and Matter-compatible setup. Selected Echo and eero models provide Thread Border Router support, but the feature is not universal across Echo Show generations. Check Amazon’s Thread support list; a compatible eero or other supported Border Router may be needed.
If a camera or doorbell connects but video fails
First confirm the camera works in its manufacturer app and has internet access. Then check that its Alexa skill is enabled and linked to the right account. Identify which function is failing: discovery, live video, two-way audio, notifications, or voice control. A camera can appear in Alexa yet fail to show video because its model or integration does not support the requested feature, authorization expired, bandwidth is weak, or the manufacturer’s service is unavailable. Check the manufacturer’s current Alexa compatibility information; support can vary by both camera and Echo Show model.

Match the symptom to the likely cause
| Symptom | Likely causes | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Echo Show cannot join Wi-Fi | Incorrect password, router issue, weak signal, or interference | Test another device on that network; restart the Echo and, if needed, router |
| Alexa app cannot find the Show | Permissions, account mismatch, setup state, or network isolation | Check account and app permissions; try the home network |
| Bluetooth device does not appear | Not in pairing mode, connected elsewhere, or too far away | Disconnect it from other hosts and enter pairing mode again nearby |
| Smart plug appears offline | Accessory Wi-Fi, manufacturer service, account link, or router isolation | Test it in the manufacturer’s app |
| Matter QR setup fails | Wrong code, camera permission, unsupported Echo, or prior commissioning | Verify the code and model support; follow the manufacturer’s reset or Multi-Admin steps |
| Zigbee device is never found | Echo lacks a Zigbee hub or accessory is not in pairing mode | Check the exact Echo generation and retry pairing mode |
| Device works in the Alexa app but not by voice | Ambiguous name, duplicate device, room assignment, or skill issue | Give it a distinct name, check its room, and rediscover if needed |
| Echo connects, then drops | Weak Wi-Fi, interference, network load, or service issue | Move it closer, try another band, and check other devices on the network |
| Previously owned device will not set up | It may remain registered to a former account | Ask the previous owner to deregister it or follow the manufacturer’s account-release process |
Remove, reconnect, or reset—in that order
Use the least disruptive fix that matches the connection:
Quick Recap
- Restart the target device and Echo Show; force-close and reopen the Alexa app.
- For Bluetooth, remove the old pairing and pair again. For a smart-home accessory, verify its manufacturer-app setup, then rediscover it in Alexa.
- If a skill is the issue, disable and re-enable it, then relink the correct account and rediscover devices.
- Remove and re-add a device only if its setup is otherwise healthy. If it belongs to a previous owner, removal from your app may not release the former account registration.
- Deregister or factory-reset the Echo Show only after the earlier steps fail and you have confirmed the exact model. A reset can erase local settings and require setup again; it will not fix an incompatible accessory or a manufacturer-cloud outage.
When to contact support
- Amazon: The Echo Show will not complete setup despite a working network, the Alexa account or registration is the obstacle, or the Show has a persistent device-side fault.
- The accessory manufacturer: The device fails in its own app, cannot enter pairing mode, is account-bound, or its cloud service or firmware appears to be the problem.
- Your ISP or router maker: Multiple household devices have internet problems, or guest-network, mesh, isolation, or access-control settings prevent local discovery.
