The Triumph Eagle TT-736U2F was not an external hard drive with storage included. It was an empty aluminum enclosure for one user-supplied 3.5-inch IDE/PATA hard disk. The March 1, 2005 AnandTech deal listed the USB 2.0/FireWire version at $41 and a FireWire-only version at $34. Those are historical prices, not current buying guidance.
Today, the enclosure is mainly interesting for Power Mac G5 restorations, legacy FireWire workflows, and collectors. For ordinary data access or recovery, a powered USB IDE/SATA adapter is usually the more practical choice.
What the Triumph Eagle product actually was
The Triumph Eagle TT-736U2F was a vertical, aluminum external-drive case styled to resemble the Apple Power Mac G5. You supplied the internal hard disk, installed it inside the enclosure, and connected the finished unit to a Mac or PC.

That distinction matters when identifying one in an old listing or forum archive: the $34 and $41 deals were for an enclosure only, not for a complete 400 GB external drive. One forum participant reported installing a 400 GB Hitachi disk, but that is an individual report rather than an independent compatibility test.

The “G5 design” described the appearance. There is no evidence that Apple manufactured, certified, or endorsed the product.

A buyer also mentioned $8.54 ground shipping. These figures belong to March 2005 and should not be treated as the unit’s present-day value. Used pricing now depends on condition, completeness, and whether the correct power adapter, stand, cables, and mounting hardware are included.

These specifications come from the period seller/forum description. The available evidence does not include a manufacturer-hosted manual, controlled benchmarks, teardown, or long-term reliability study. Cooling, shock protection, flawless operation, and the advertised capacity should therefore be treated as claims rather than independently verified results.

Oxford 911 explained
“Oxford 911” was the FireWire-to-IDE bridge controller, not the hard disk model and not an operating-system version.
- IDE/PATA: the 40-pin drive connection inside the enclosure.
- Oxford 911: the bridge electronics translating between the IDE disk and FireWire.
- IEEE 1394/FireWire 400: the external computer connection, with a theoretical maximum of 400 Mb/s.
- USB 2.0: the alternative external connection on the combo version, with a theoretical maximum of 480 Mb/s.
Real-world transfer rates would have been lower and dependent on the hard disk, bridge electronics, filesystem, cables, and computer controller. The Oxford 911 name does not imply USB 3.x performance. Specialist documentation also identifies OXFW911 hardware as a FireWire-to-IDE bridge; see IOI’s Oxford bridge information.
Which drives fit?
The straightforward match is a standard 3.5-inch IDE/EIDE/PATA hard drive with a 40-pin data connector and separate Molex-style power connection.

These are not automatically compatible:
- SATA hard drives or SSDs
- 2.5-inch laptop IDE drives
- 3.5-inch SAS drives
- NVMe drives
- Modern USB-native external drives
Adapters can sometimes connect a different drive type, but that introduces additional power, jumper, mechanical, and compatibility variables. The original listing also contains contradictory capacity information: it advertised support up to 400 GB but separately stated “IDE Drive (Up to 300g).” That may be a typo, a copied specification, or a revision difference. Without an original manual or datasheet, do not promise either figure as a definitive maximum.
Installing an IDE disk
- Confirm that the disk is a 3.5-inch IDE/PATA model.
- Check the drive label or manufacturer diagram for jumper positions.
- For a single-drive enclosure, try Master; Cable Select may work with some drives and bridges.
- Open the case and connect the IDE ribbon cable and Molex power connector.
- Seat or secure the disk, then close the enclosure.
- Place it in the vertical stand if included.
- Connect the correct external power supply.
- Connect USB 2.0 or FireWire to the computer.
- Wait for detection before formatting or partitioning the disk.
Do not guess at a replacement power adapter. The voltage, current capacity, polarity, connector dimensions, and 5 V/12 V requirements must match. A plug that fits can still damage the enclosure or disk.
Mac, PC, and Power Mac G5 compatibility
The product was marketed for both PC and Mac systems and was designed visually to complement the Power Mac G5. However, the surviving evidence does not establish universal compatibility with every G5 generation, every Mac OS X release, or every disk capacity.

The period listing claimed Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, and Mac OS 8.6 or later. Those claims are historical and do not guarantee operation with current Windows or macOS. The enclosure transports block data; the computer still needs to understand the disk’s filesystem. HFS/HFS+, NTFS, and other formats may require an appropriate operating system or utility.
FireWire can be especially inconvenient with current computers. A modern system may require an adapter chain from FireWire 400, and compatibility is not guaranteed. For important legacy data, a period Mac with native FireWire may be more dependable than several adapters.
“Hot-swappable” does not mean safe to unplug during writes
The listing claimed hot-swappable operation. In practice, the operating system must finish pending writes and the volume must be unmounted or ejected before disconnecting power or the data cable. Removing a spinning disk during active writes can corrupt the filesystem or files.

The archived description does not document a definitive period-specific Mac OS X eject procedure, so use the eject or unmount control provided by the operating system you are running.
Troubleshooting a disk that is not detected
- Confirm that the external adapter is connected and the enclosure receives power.
- Check that the IDE ribbon cable and Molex connector are fully seated and correctly oriented.
- Recheck the drive jumper. A disk set to Slave may not work as the only device; try Master or Cable Select according to the drive’s diagram.
- Try the other interface: FireWire if USB fails, or USB if FireWire fails.
- Use a different cable and computer port.
- Check system information to see whether the bridge device is visible.
- Check Disk Utility on a Mac or the equivalent disk-management tool on Windows.
- Test with a known-good IDE drive, or test the suspect disk with another adapter.
Very old pre-ATA-4 or sub-1 GB drives can be unsupported by some newer bridge hardware, as noted in current IDE-enclosure guidance from StarTech. A clicking or mechanically failing disk should not be repeatedly power-cycled. If the data matters, create a sector-level image before attempting filesystem repair.
Is the Triumph Eagle worth buying today?
It can make sense for:
- A period-correct Power Mac G5 setup
- A vintage FireWire 400 workflow
- A collector who values the matching aluminum design
- Someone who already owns the enclosure and a compatible IDE disk
It is a poor choice for:
- Modern USB 3, USB-C, Thunderbolt, or high-speed storage
- SATA, SSD, or NVMe drives
- Primary backups or irreplaceable data
- Buyers who need a warranty and replacement parts
- Anyone paying a collector premium solely for storage functionality
A vintage IDE hard disk is more likely to fail than the enclosure. Even if the bridge works, it should not be your only backup.

A dedicated USB IDE enclosure is cleaner for permanent use, but comparable models such as StarTech’s IDE3510U2 are now marked discontinued. For occasional access, recovery, or copying data, a powered USB-to-IDE/SATA adapter is more practical. StarTech’s USB3SSATAIDE supports bare 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch IDE/SATA drives, includes external power for larger drives, and lists USB 3.0 performance up to 5 Gb/s. Its displayed price was $54.31 when checked, so price and availability may change.
A modern SATA enclosure will not directly accept an IDE disk, and USB-C describes the host connector rather than the internal drive interface. Likewise, a USB adapter does not preserve FireWire compatibility for a vintage Mac. Used FireWire/IDE enclosures remain a niche option, but availability, power supplies, and support should be verified carefully.
Bottom line
The Triumph Eagle TT-736U2F was a stylish and reasonably attractive 2005 accessory: an empty 3.5-inch IDE enclosure with USB 2.0 and, on the combo model, FireWire 400 through an Oxford 911 bridge. Its real value today is historical or restoration-related. If you need to read a bare PATA disk safely and conveniently, choose a current powered IDE/SATA USB adapter instead.
