WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque confirmed in January 2025 that Raw would not be locked to one fixed weekly runtime after moving to Netflix. He described roughly two and a half hours as the preferred average, but said episodes could be shorter or longer when the week’s stories and matches required it.
That change is separate from SmackDown’s three-hour format. Levesque said the expanded network-TV version was temporary and would eventually return to two hours.
What Triple H confirmed about Raw
When Raw debuted on Netflix in the United States on January 6, 2025, WWE gained more flexibility over the length of each episode. In an interview reported by Sports Illustrated, Levesque said the show would not need to follow the same fixed runtime every week.

That figure was presented as an average or “sweet spot,” not as a new contractual runtime. A typical episode could therefore be close to that length, while a particularly important show might run longer and a lighter episode could finish sooner.

In other words, “no set runtime” means flexible runtime, not unlimited runtime.
Why Netflix changes the equation
A traditional television broadcast has to fit a defined schedule. The network assigns a time slot, commercial breaks occupy part of the presentation, and the program generally has to end at a precise time so the next show can begin.
A streaming release does not impose that same weekly broadcast-clock structure. WWE can shape the episode around the material it believes the stories need instead of padding a shorter show or rushing a match to meet a hard television deadline.

It also should not be read as a promise that every episode will stream without advertising or commercial content; Fightful’s reporting treated runtime flexibility and commercial time as separate issues.

The two-and-a-half-hour figure is not a guarantee
Viewers should not interpret the target as meaning that Raw is permanently two hours and 30 minutes. WWE has not been described as adopting that figure as a formal weekly rule.
A flexible format could allow WWE to:
- Give a major match enough time to reach a natural finish.
- Expand a post-event episode with additional angles or follow-up segments.
- Develop an important storyline without cutting away from it prematurely.
- Finish earlier when the scheduled material does not justify another segment.
Additional time also does not automatically mean more wrestling. WWE could use it for matches, promos, backstage scenes, video packages, entrances or post-match developments. Episode length alone cannot establish how much in-ring action viewers will receive.
What happened before Raw moved to Netflix?
The Netflix arrangement followed a short transition period on USA Network. Raw ran for two hours from October 7 through December 30, 2024, before its Netflix launch. That temporary two-hour period was not the same thing as Netflix imposing a permanent two-hour format.

Once the show moved to streaming, the central change was not a guaranteed increase or reduction in length. It was the ability to vary the length from week to week.

SmackDown is a separate situation
SmackDown remained tied to its USA Network television arrangement. The show moved to a three-hour format at the beginning of January 2025, but Levesque said during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show that it was three hours “for right now” and would eventually return to two hours.
He did not provide a firm return date in the reporting cited by WrestleTalk. The important distinction is that SmackDown’s three-hour period was described as temporary, while Raw’s Netflix format was described as flexible.
What later reporting said about the SmackDown schedule
An April 30, 2026 report from Wrestling Inc., citing Dave Meltzer and Wrestling Observer Radio, described a recurring structure in which SmackDown would run for three hours from January through the end of June and two hours from July through the end of December. The report said a similar arrangement could continue for approximately four years under the deal as understood at that time.
This is secondary reporting, not a direct WWE or USA Network announcement. It also identified the 2026 changeover as expected around the last week of June or first week of July, without independently verifying the exact episode on which the two-hour format took effect. It should therefore be treated as reported schedule information rather than a formally confirmed permanent WWE policy.

What viewers should expect
Will Raw always be longer on Netflix?
No. The confirmed change is flexibility, so an episode can be shorter or longer than the approximate two-and-a-half-hour target.
Will every episode contain more matches?
No. Extra time may be devoted to matches, but it may also go to promos, story development, video packages or other segments.
Will Raw have an unpredictable ending time?
Its duration may be less predictable than when it occupied a fixed network slot. Netflix’s presentation and WWE’s production plans still create practical boundaries, but viewers should not assume every episode will have exactly the same length.
Does this apply to SmackDown too?
Not in the same way. Raw gained flexibility through its streaming distribution arrangement. SmackDown remained subject to a television schedule, with its three-hour period characterized as temporary.

Does a flexible runtime mean there will be no commercials?
No. The available reporting supports flexibility in total episode length, not the elimination of advertising or every interruption from the broader presentation.
The bottom line
Triple H’s comments established two different runtime stories. Raw on Netflix does not have to fit one fixed weekly length, with approximately two and a half hours serving as a practical target rather than a guarantee. SmackDown’s three-hour format was a temporary network-TV arrangement, and later reporting described a recurring shift between three-hour and two-hour periods.
WWE is not removing all runtime limits from all of its weekly programming. It is gaining streaming flexibility for Raw while managing SmackDown around a separate television schedule.
