Seelen UI is much more than a Windows theme. It is a free, open-source desktop customization layer for Windows 10 and Windows 11 that can combine a replacement-style taskbar or dock, tiling windows, virtual workspaces, widgets, launch and search tools, themes, and live wallpapers.
Its appeal is integration: instead of assembling several utilities, you can build one coordinated desktop workflow. The trade-off is a steeper learning curve and a greater chance of conflicts with other tools that modify Explorer, the taskbar, or window behavior.
What is Seelen UI?
Seelen UI changes the way everyday Windows desktop components look and behave. Depending on the features you enable, it can replace or overlay the taskbar, dock, Start menu, Alt+Tab switcher, system flyouts, launcher, widgets, wallpapers, virtual workspaces, and window-management behavior.

The practical distinction is important: Seelen UI can substantially change the Windows shell experience, but it does not replace Windows Explorer, the Windows kernel, or the operating system itself.

Unlike a conventional Windows theme, it also changes interaction patterns. Tiling layouts, keyboard navigation, workspace rules, app search, and per-application behavior can affect how you work, not just how the desktop looks.
Who should use Seelen UI?
Seelen UI is a strong fit if you want:
- A unified dock, toolbar, theme, widget, and wallpaper system.
- Automatic window arrangement and keyboard-first navigation.
- Named workspaces and per-monitor customization.
- A macOS-, Linux-, or power-user-style Windows desktop.
- One application covering several customization jobs.
It may be a poor fit if you only want to center taskbar icons, change one visual detail, preserve every native Windows behavior, or avoid troubleshooting shell integrations. The project also warns that debloated, modified, or heavily customized Windows installations may have disabled components Seelen UI requires.
Compatibility and prerequisites
The project officially supports Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft Edge is required for correct operation because Seelen UI depends on WebView-based components. Windows 11 normally includes the required runtime; the Windows 10 setup.exe package includes it.
On a fresh Windows installation, a white, dark, or incomplete interface can simply indicate that Windows Update has not finished. Install pending updates and restart before diagnosing Seelen UI. If your Windows edition, Insider build, or system image is unusual, check the current release notes and FAQ.
As of August 18, 2026, the latest visible GitHub release was Seelen UI v2.8.2, released August 3, 2026. It added a grid workspace system, workspace navigation and movement shortcuts, periodic memory cleanup through Chrome DevTools Protocol, and fixes affecting Windows 10 and app search. Check the latest release page rather than assuming this version remains current.
How to install Seelen UI
Microsoft Store: best for most users
Install it from the official Microsoft Store listing. This is the simplest option for beginners: the package is signed, updates are managed through the Store, and uninstalling is straightforward. Store releases can appear one to three business days after GitHub releases because of review.
WinGet: useful for repeatable setup
Open PowerShell or Windows Terminal and run:
winget install --id Seelen.SeelenUIThe project identifies this as the same signed MSIX used by the Store. WinGet availability can also lag GitHub while the package is processed.

GitHub Releases: newest packages first
Download only from the project’s official GitHub releases. The project publishes signed .msix and .exe packages; the executable installer provides in-app update notifications. Avoid third-party download mirrors.
Before installation, create a restore point or confirm that normal Windows recovery is available. Close other taskbar replacements, docks, wallpaper tools, Alt+Tab replacements, and tiling managers. Several applications modifying the same Windows components can interfere with one another.
A safe first-run setup
Do not enable every feature at once. A staged setup makes it much easier to identify a conflict.
- Install Seelen UI and open its settings interface.
- Enable only the toolbar or dock initially.
- Use bottom placement and keep the design close to native Windows while testing.
- Keep the Windows taskbar available until the replacement is comfortable.
- Choose a basic theme and confirm that the desktop starts correctly after a restart.
- Add tiling, workspaces, widgets, and live wallpapers one at a time.
Exact labels and panel locations can change between releases, so use the installed build’s settings interface rather than relying on an old screenshot or static menu path.

Customize the taskbar, dock, and toolbar
SeelenWeg can operate as a full-width taskbar or a centered, floating macOS-style dock. The official feature list includes top, bottom, left, and right placement; independent monitor positioning; always-visible, auto-hide, and overlap-based hiding; icon sizing; hover zoom; spacing; window previews; pinned applications and files; and inline media controls.
The first ten pinned dock items can be launched with Win+1 through Win+0. Shortcuts may be remapped, however, so confirm the bindings in your installation before building a workflow around them.

Start with only the clock, workspace, battery, or network. A toolbar packed with telemetry can undermine a minimalist design and add unnecessary activity.

Start menu and launcher
Seelen UI’s customized Start experience supports application, file, and web search, pinned applications, and custom folders. Scope prefixes such as apps:, files:, and web: can narrow searches.

Think of the Start-style interface as better for browsing and the launcher as better for rapid keyboard search; their purposes overlap, but they serve different interaction styles.
Configure tiling windows
The listed layout engines are:
- BSPWM: Flexible recursive splitting for dynamic layouts.
- Tall: One primary window with secondary windows alongside it.
- Wide: The same basic idea arranged for wide displays.
- Grid: Predictable equal-area placement for dashboards or similar windows.
The official site gives Alt+I, Alt+K, Alt+J, and Alt+L as example navigation shortcuts. Treat these as examples, not universal guarantees: bindings can vary or conflict with other software, and Seelen’s settings allow remapping.
Begin with Tall or Wide on one monitor. Test File Explorer, a browser, and a text editor before adding more complex layouts. Configure gaps and padding to control density, then use per-application rules instead of forcing every program into the same arrangement.
Games, fixed-size dialogs, login windows, picture-in-picture players, creative applications, remote desktop clients, and elevated windows are common floating candidates. A floating exception is often the correct solution when an application does not tile cleanly.
Organize workspaces
Seelen UI supports named virtual desktops, workspace icons, workspace viewers, automatic application assignment, per-workspace wallpapers, workspace rules, and multi-monitor configuration.
Version 2.8.2 added a grid workspace system, including shortcuts for moving between workspace rows and columns and sending the focused window to adjacent positions. A practical arrangement might be:

- Workspace 2: Writing or coding.
- Workspace 3: Communications.

Start with only a few workspaces. Assign a small number of applications automatically and test both switching focus and moving windows before adding workspace-specific wallpapers or complex rules.

Themes and CSS/JSON customization
Seelen UI themes can control colors, fonts, borders, animations, shell surfaces, widgets, and light or dark variants. The project also supports community themes and portable configuration stored in plain files.
A sensible progression is:
- Start with a built-in or community theme.
- Change only the accent color and transparency.
- Adjust typography, spacing, and borders.
- Modify widget styling.
- Create a custom theme only after understanding the existing structure.
Back up your configuration before editing CSS or JSON. Do not assume file paths or selectors from an older release will remain unchanged.
Dynamic accent colors
Seelen UI can derive an accent color from the wallpaper. This reduces manual design work, but changing images can produce poor contrast or distracting color shifts. Use a fixed accent when consistency and readability matter more than automatic styling.
Widgets
Available categories include clocks, calendars, CPU and RAM monitoring, network and disk activity, media controls, weather, notifications, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, battery, and Do Not Disturb controls.
Start with one clock and one useful system widget. Avoid putting high-frequency monitors on every display, and temporarily disable widgets when diagnosing visual glitches or performance problems.

Live wallpapers
Seelen UI supports MP4 and WebM video wallpapers, interactive HTML/CSS/JavaScript wallpapers, music-synchronized backgrounds, per-monitor and per-workspace collections, and controls for speed, blur, saturation, and color overlays.

Live wallpapers can increase GPU use, heat, and battery consumption depending on the content and hardware. Disable them while diagnosing gaming or performance problems rather than assuming they are always lightweight.
Performance and compatibility trade-offs
The official FAQ says resource usage varies with active plugins and configuration. There is no useful universal RAM or CPU figure: monitors, widgets, animations, wallpapers, and shell integrations all affect the result.

- Disable live wallpapers.
- Disable system-monitor widgets.
- Reduce animations and toolbar items.
- Test with only the dock or toolbar enabled.
- Compare normal desktop and gaming workloads.
- Re-enable features individually.
Troubleshooting Seelen UI
White, dark, or blank interface
- Run Windows Update and restart.
- Confirm Microsoft Edge is installed and working.
- Check the WebView runtime.
- On Windows 10, try the official
setup.exepackage. - If a GitHub installer behaves unexpectedly, try the Microsoft Store package.
Gray boxes or visual artifacts
The official FAQ commonly attributes gray boxes to other software modifying or interfering with Windows internal components. Disable taskbar customizers, Explorer patches, third-party docks, Alt+Tab tools, and similar utilities. Restart Seelen UI, then re-enable those tools one at a time to find the conflict.
The dock or taskbar disappears
Check whether auto-hide is enabled, whether Seelen UI started, and whether a recent update or per-monitor setting changed its visibility. Disable conflicting shell tools and restore a visible mode in Seelen’s settings. If necessary, restart Windows Explorer or reboot. You can uninstall Seelen UI through Windows Settings → Apps or the Microsoft Store.
Tiling breaks an application
Use floating mode or a per-application rule. Fixed-size dialogs, games, launchers, and elevated windows often need exceptions.
Keyboard shortcuts conflict
Check Windows shortcuts, application bindings, gaming overlays, PowerToys Keyboard Manager, and other tiling managers. Remap Seelen’s bindings instead of assuming an example shortcut is safe on every system.

Final verdict
Choose Seelen UI when you want appearance and workflow changes in one coordinated package: a dock or taskbar, tiling, workspaces, search, widgets, themes, and wallpapers. It is particularly compelling for keyboard-oriented users, multitaskers, and multi-monitor setups.
Choose a lighter utility when you need only one small taskbar adjustment, strictly native Windows behavior, the lowest possible background overhead, or maximum compatibility with a heavily modified Windows installation. Seelen UI is powerful, but its value comes with a learning curve and a responsibility to introduce features gradually.
