Use Google Search Console to see how your verified property actually performed in Google Search by country. Use a dedicated rank tracker when you need repeatable observations for a fixed keyword list from specific countries, cities, devices, languages, or search engines. These are different measurements: Search Console reports observed clicks and impressions, while a tracker samples configured SERPs.
This distinction explains why a personal search, Search Console average position, and a tracker’s position can disagree. The workflow below keeps the measurements separate, makes country comparisons fair, and shows how to automate supporting screenshots without confusing visual evidence with ranking data.
What “ranking by country” can mean
Before opening a tool, define the question you are answering:
- Traffic question: Which countries generated Google impressions, clicks, click-through rate (CTR), and average position for this property? Search Console is the appropriate starting point.
- Monitoring question: Where does a selected set of keywords appear when searched from each target market? A rank tracker is designed for this controlled sample.
- Evidence question: What did the result page look like at a particular time and location? A screenshot is useful documentation, but it is not a substitute for either data source.
A country filter does not reveal one universal rank that every person in that country sees. Google says results vary with time, place, device, and recent search history. Treat every position as an observation with context.

Use Search Console for observed country performance
Open the country breakdown
- Sign in to the verified property in Google Search Console.
- Open Performance → Search results.
- Choose a date range that matches the question (for example, the last 28 days or a comparable prior period).
- In the breakdown tabs, select Countries. Select a country row to filter the report, or compare countries that have data for the property.
- Review the same date range in the Queries and Pages tabs to find which searches and URLs explain the country result.
The report includes clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position. It only covers links pointing to the property you opened, so check that the property type and URL scope include the pages you intend to measure.
Read average position correctly
Search Console’s average position is aggregated. In the chart, Google uses the topmost result from your property for each impression; a table value depends on the selected grouping (such as country, query, or page). It is therefore not a promise that every searcher saw the URL at that rank. Use it to compare consistent segments and periods, not as a fixed rank claim.
Turn a country report into an action list
- Sort countries by impressions to find markets where Google shows you often but users rarely click; inspect titles, snippets, and intent for those queries.
- Sort by clicks to identify markets already producing visits, then examine the pages and queries that drive them.
- Compare CTR and average position together. A position change with no traffic change may matter less than a small change on a high-impression query.
- Use consistent date windows when comparing countries or months; otherwise seasonality can look like a geographic effect.
Use a rank tracker for repeatable keyword observations
What a tracker adds
Position Tracking is described by Semrush as a tool that monitors a website’s search rankings daily for specific keywords. You maintain an explicit keyword list and configure the search context. Depending on the product and subscription, settings can include country, state or region, city, ZIP or postal code, language, device, and search engine. Semrush documentation also describes coverage for Google, Bing, Baidu, ChatGPT Search, and Google AI Mode; verify current availability and plan limits before creating a campaign.
Configure one campaign per comparable market
- Enter the same keyword set for every market. Record whether terms are exact, localized, branded, or translated.
- Choose the same search engine and language unless the market question specifically requires a difference.
- Set the target country or, for local-intent terms, the city, region, or postal code that represents the service area.
- Keep device (desktop or mobile) constant across markets.
- Choose a recurring schedule, such as daily, and record the observation date and time zone.
- Document every setting and any SERP feature or competitor segment the tool reports.
Local-intent searches can change substantially within one country. A national setting may be a poor proxy for a business serving one city. Conversely, a city-level sample should not be reported as national visibility.
Rank #2
Automate collection carefully
Semrush’s Position Tracking API documentation describes campaign management and location-specific reports, including organic competitors appearing in Google’s top 100 for campaign keywords in a chosen location. API requests use usage units, so confirm access, quotas, and cost in the current documentation before building a scheduled pipeline. Store the campaign ID, location, device, language, engine, keyword, observed position, and timestamp with every export.
Make country comparisons fair
| Control | Why it matters | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword list | Different terms measure different intent and demand. | Exact text, translation, brand/non-brand label. |
| Search engine | Google, Bing, and other engines produce different SERPs. | Engine and edition used. |
| Location | Country, city, and postal-code targeting can return different results. | Target and tool’s location definition. |
| Language | Language changes queries and result eligibility. | Interface/query language setting. |
| Device | Mobile and desktop layouts and rankings can differ. | Device or viewport. |
| Time window | Algorithm updates, seasonality, and news alter results. | Collection date, time zone, and comparison window. |
Change one variable at a time when diagnosing a market difference. If you change country, language, device, and keyword translation simultaneously, you cannot tell which factor caused the movement.
Keep traffic data and sampled rank in separate reports
Create two reporting sections:
- Observed Google performance: Search Console clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position by country, query, and page.
- Configured SERP sample: tracker positions, visibility measures, SERP features, competitor observations, and the exact location/device/language/engine settings.
Do not average these numbers into one “true rank.” Search Console is based on impressions involving your property; a tracker checks the keywords and settings you selected. A tracker may show a position even when your site received no impression in the reporting period, while Search Console can show traffic from queries you never added to the tracker.
Diagnose a disagreement
- Confirm the Search Console property scope and date range.
- Check that the tracker’s URL, keyword spelling, country, city, language, device, and engine match the intended comparison.
- Check whether the query has local intent, personalization, news, shopping, video, AI, or another SERP feature.
- Compare impressions and clicks, not position alone. A sampled rank change matters more when impressions or clicks move with it.
- Capture a timestamped SERP screenshot only as qualitative evidence; do not treat one manual search as a market-wide measurement.
Capture supporting SERP screenshots without polluting the data
For a manual audit, use a clean browser profile, the intended device emulation, and a logged-out session. Record the query, location, language, device, date, and time beside the image. Avoid presenting a personalized result as representative of an entire country.

Rank #3
When a repeatable image is useful for a report or regression check, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through an API. It is a screenshot service, not a keyword rank database; use it to preserve what a configured page looked like alongside your Search Console or tracker records.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for the full option set. A basic capture is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
For SERP documentation, relevant options include a chosen viewport or one of 12 device presets, retina scale, full-page capture with lazy images loaded, custom headers/cookies/user agent, timezone and geolocation, waits for a selector, delay, or network idle, custom JavaScript, hidden selectors, request/resource blocking, caching with a chosen TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and PDF page settings. These controls help you reproduce a page context, but they do not turn a screenshot into a statistically representative rank measurement.
Plans include 1,000 shots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.

Choose an observation cadence
Daily tracking is useful for a volatile launch, migration, or algorithm investigation, but it creates more observations and API usage. Weekly or monthly comparisons are often sufficient for stable content. Keep the cadence identical across countries so one market does not appear more volatile simply because it was checked more often.
Control data quality
- Version your keyword list; record additions, removals, translations, and search-intent changes.
- Store raw exports before aggregating dashboards.
- Annotate site releases, redirects, outages, localization launches, and major Google events.
- Use the same URL canonicalization and property scope in every report.
- Set alerts on sustained movement or click/impression changes, not on one sampled position.
Budget for the right unit
Search Console has no per-query sampling configuration: it reports the data available for your property. Rank trackers and their APIs may limit locations, keyword counts, refresh frequency, or multitargeting by subscription. Screenshot services charge according to their own shot rules; ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots and identifies billing in response headers. Price or feature terms for third-party tools can change, so verify the current plan before committing.
Troubleshooting country tracking
A country is missing in Search Console
The property may have insufficient data for that country, the date range may be too narrow, or the selected property may not include the relevant URLs. Expand the date range, confirm property scope, and compare only countries for which the report contains data.

Check aggregation first: Search Console average position is not a single observed SERP rank. Then align keyword, location, language, device, engine, date, and URL. Investigate personalization and SERP features before concluding that either system is broken.
Best Value
National data looks wrong for a local business
Re-run the keyword set at the served city, region, or postal code. Keep the national campaign, but label it as a broad visibility sample rather than a proxy for customers near the business.
Daily positions swing sharply
Look for changed settings, data-center or location differences, news-driven SERPs, device changes, or a small keyword sample. Compare a consistent rolling window and inspect impressions and clicks before reacting.
A ScreenshotNeo capture is blank or blocked
Check the returned X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers, increase the wait condition, or provide required headers/cookies. A bot check, blank page, timeout, or failed load is not billed under ScreenshotNeo’s stated billing rules; use the page verdict to exclude it from visual evidence.

Can I see a guaranteed Google rank for every country?
No. Google results depend on context, and any tracker is a configured sample. Report the settings and date with the position.
Should I translate keywords for each market?
Translate when users actually search in that language, but treat translated terms as a different keyword set and document the change rather than comparing them as identical queries.
Does a high position prove SEO success?
No. Pair visibility with impressions, clicks, and CTR, then connect those visits to the business outcome you care about.
Can screenshots replace rank tracking?
No. Screenshots preserve page appearance at one observation; they do not provide the repeated, structured measurements needed for trend analysis.
