For a commercial theme, browse ThemeForest and check the license and product details for the specific item. You can also buy directly from an independent developer, but assess that seller and its terms yourself. These are different ways to find themes, not a verified ranking of every marketplace or a guarantee that any particular theme will suit your site.
Where to look for a WordPress theme
The right place to search depends first on whether you want a directory-hosted free theme or are considering a paid listing. WordPress.org describes its directory as a curated home for open-source themes, rather than an attempt to host every theme available.
WordPress.org Theme Directory: free themes
The directory lets you browse and download themes, and WordPress.org says you can install its themes directly from your site’s administration screens. Its getting-started page says hosted themes are 100% GPL or GPL-compatible. The WordPress documentation page, last updated August 7, 2026, reports over 9,000 themes and describes filters for layout, subject, and features, including ways to discover block themes. It also describes previews and a review process. See WordPress.org’s theme documentation for its current discovery and preview guidance.
The directory’s stated aim is “to host the best open source WordPress themes around,” not to list every theme in the world. The submission review is useful context, but it is not a promise that every listed theme fits a particular project or will remain maintained indefinitely.

ThemeForest: commercial listings
ThemeForest lists commercial WordPress themes. Its license information frames a purchase as a license to use an item; it is not a blanket transfer of unrestricted ownership. Read the applicable license and FAQ for the intended use, and inspect the individual listing for its current compatibility information, update history, support terms, included requirements, and other conditions. The license overview does not establish uniform terms for every product.
Independent theme developer shops
Buying from a theme developer’s own shop is another distribution route recognized in the WordPress theme publishing handbook. That recognition is not an endorsement or assessment of particular shops. Before buying, establish who the seller is and what its license, updates, support, compatibility, and refund terms provide. Check whether a free version or trial is available if you need to evaluate the theme first.

Compare the routes by what you need
| Route | What the cited sources establish | What to verify for your project |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress.org Theme Directory | Downloadable directory themes, search and filters, previews, reviewed submissions, and hosted themes described as 100% GPL or compatible. Sources: WordPress.org Getting Started and WordPress.org theme documentation. | Required layout and features; block-editor or full-site-editing fit; preview; ratings and support forum; recent maintenance and compatibility. |
| ThemeForest | Commercial WordPress theme listings, with use governed by item license terms. Source: ThemeForest Licenses. | License for the intended use; listing-specific support and duration; updates and compatibility; demo and documentation; required builders or plugins; refund and marketplace terms. |
| Independent developer shop | A recognized distribution route; the cited handbook does not assess individual shops. Source: WordPress theme publishing handbook. | Seller identity; license; update and support commitments; compatibility; refund terms; availability of a free version or trial. |
Use those checks rather than choosing on a screenshot or sales rank alone. Marketplace terms and individual product details can vary and change. The sources cited here do not establish that one route is always safer, faster, better coded, or cheaper.
How to assess a theme before installing or paying
- Define the site’s needs. Write down the layout, content types, and features the theme must support. If you want block-editor or full-site-editing capabilities, confirm those against the theme’s current listing or directory information rather than inferring them from its appearance.
- Inspect the live listing and preview. Check the demo or directory preview on the pages and screen sizes that matter to your site. WordPress.org advises previewing themes and investigating a blank preview before activation; a blank preview is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself that the theme is unusable.
- Check compatibility and dependencies. Look for stated WordPress compatibility and any required page builders, plugins, or other components. Confirm that the theme supports the features you need and that its requirements fit your existing setup.
- Review maintenance and support evidence. Look for update history, documentation, ratings, and support information where available. For a paid listing, determine what support is included and for how long from that item’s current terms; do not assume all listings provide the same coverage.
- Read the license before use. For a marketplace purchase, confirm that the item license covers your intended use. WordPress.org says WordPress is licensed under GPLv2 or later and that the project considers themes and plugins derivative works that inherit GPL, while acknowledging legal grey areas. That is WordPress.org’s stated position, not a substitute for legal advice or a claim that every marketplace license and use case is identical. See WordPress.org’s license page.
What a marketplace label does—and does not—tell you
A directory listing or marketplace presence helps you discover a theme; it does not establish that its design, maintenance, support, compatibility, or license is right for your particular site. WordPress.org’s review process and GPL-compatible hosting apply to themes hosted in its directory. They do not establish the quality or terms of themes sold elsewhere. Likewise, the ThemeForest license overview explains the marketplace’s license framing but does not settle the details for each product. Make the final decision from the current theme listing, its terms, and a preview suited to your needs.
