Fieldwire is the best starting point for most teams whose main need is assigning and tracking construction tasks. Its plan-based tasks, punch lists, inspections, and field workflows map closely to that job. But it is not a universal winner: large general contractors may need Procore or Autodesk Build, home builders may prefer Buildertrend or JobTread, and teams focused on daily reports should consider Raken.
The right choice depends on whether you need a field task tool or a broader construction-management system. Use the comparison below to narrow the list to one or two candidates, then test them with field users on a live project.
Construction task-management software at a glance
These products solve overlapping but different problems. The recommendations below are based on construction workflow fit, task and field capabilities, breadth, and pricing transparency—not on a hands-on product test.
| Software | Best for | Strength | Pricing model | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fieldwire | Plan-based field tasks and punch lists | Construction tasks, plans, inspections, scheduling, and field reporting | Public per-user tiers; limited free plan | Not a full financial or accounting platform |
| Procore | Large GCs and multi-party projects | Broad construction-management suite and configurable modules | Custom annual quote based on products and Annual Construction Volume | May be excessive for a task-only need; no public list price |
| Autodesk Forma / Build | BIM-heavy and design-build teams | Connected model, document, issue, cost, quality, safety, and closeout workflows | Bundle- or quote-based | Buyers must confirm exact products and modules in the offer |
| Buildertrend | Residential builders and remodelers | Tasks alongside schedules, client workflows, selections, and financial tools | Custom quote | Broader than a field-only task app |
| JobTread | Small and midsize contractors needing business management | Job costing, estimating, scheduling, change orders, and portals | $199/month base plus internal-user fees | May cost more than needed for a narrow punch-list workflow |
| Raken | Daily reports and field visibility | Daily reports, time cards, production tracking, checklists, and observations | Contact vendor; usable public price not exposed on the reviewed page | Not automatically a full replacement for a construction PM suite |
| monday.com | Generic work management across departments | Flexible boards, templates, mobile apps, and low entry price | Free limited plan and per-seat paid plans | Construction-specific processes require configuration |

What construction task-management software does
Construction task software coordinates work at the level of an assigned task: who owns it, which trade or crew is responsible, where it happens, when it is due, what evidence is needed, and whether it is complete. A useful task record may include a room, floor, asset, or plan reference; priority and status; photos or files; notes; due dates; and completion verification.
That context is what separates construction task management from a generic to-do list. A field item may be tied to a drawing sheet, a subcontractor, an inspection, a punch list, an RFI, a submittal, or a safety and quality record. Fieldwire describes plan- and trade-oriented task workflows with punch lists, inspections, scheduling, reporting, photos, notes, and videos.
Task app or full construction-management platform?
A task-focused product is usually intended for assignment, status updates, due dates, photos, punch lists, checklists, basic scheduling, and team communication. A full construction-management platform may add estimating, contracts, budgets and cost codes, purchase orders, change orders, RFIs, submittals, document control, daily logs, time tracking, safety, quality, portals, accounting integrations, and closeout.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not buy an enterprise suite just to replace a spreadsheet task list if the process problem is simply unclear ownership or inconsistent updates. Conversely, a field task tool may not be enough if you need contract administration, cost forecasting, or formal document controls. “All-in-one” is not a guarantee that every module you need is included in the quoted subscription.
Detailed picks
Fieldwire: best for construction task management
Best for: Superintendents, foremen, project engineers, specialty contractors, and GCs whose immediate problem is field coordination, inspections, or punch-list closure.
Fieldwire is the closest match when “task management” means assign work, tie it to a plan or location, and verify it in the field. Its official product information lists plan viewing, tasks, punch lists, inspections, scheduling, reports, photos and files, task priorities, categories, due dates, assignees, custom statuses, custom fields, and forms. The Business tier lists a BIM viewer; Business Plus lists RFIs, submittals, change orders, and budget functions. Task import from Excel or CSV is also listed.
Pricing: The public pricing page showed Basic at $0 per user per month, limited to five users, three projects, and 100 sheets; Pro at $39, Business at $64, and Business Plus at $89 per user per month when billed annually. Custom contracts are offered for options such as unlimited users, tailored training, dedicated success teams, API access, and SSO. Verify current plan limits and features at Fieldwire pricing.
Trade-off: It is stronger as a field-execution tool than as a complete financial-management platform. Advanced project-administration functions are associated with higher tiers, and a business may still need separate estimating, accounting, or ERP software. The free tier is useful for a constrained evaluation, not necessarily a full-company rollout.

Choose it when missed field tasks, plan context, punch lists, and mobile coordination are the main pain. Look elsewhere or add another system if you need deep company-wide job costing or contract controls.
Procore: best for large GCs and enterprise collaboration
Best for: Large general contractors, owners, developers, and organizations coordinating many stakeholders across formal project controls.
Procore is a broad construction-management platform rather than merely a task list. Its commercial model is modular: the vendor says pricing is customized according to selected products and Annual Construction Volume, with an upfront annual fee. Procore markets unlimited users and data, and includes implementation services, training, support, and cloud infrastructure in its pricing description. See the official pricing page for the current buying model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTrade-off: There is no public list price in the cited model, and cost depends on construction volume and chosen products. Teams should plan for implementation and process standardization as well as subscription cost. “Unlimited users” does not make the platform automatically economical for a small contractor that only needs task assignment.
Choose it when the organization needs standardized collaboration and broader project-management or financial workflows, and can support an enterprise implementation. Do not select it solely for a simple field task list.
Autodesk Forma / Autodesk Build: best for BIM-heavy and design-build teams
Best for: Commercial teams already invested in Autodesk, BIM-centered organizations, and design-build firms that need continuity between model coordination and construction operations.
Autodesk’s construction pricing page presents bundles and related capabilities including Forma Data Management and Forma Build, project management, document and issue management, cost, quality, safety, closeout, reporting, design collaboration, reality capture, model coordination, clash detection, 4D/5D simulation, and quantification or estimating. The exact combination depends on the products and bundle being considered; review the Autodesk pricing page and confirm the specific modules in any proposal.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTrade-off: Product naming and bundles can be difficult to compare, and pricing is primarily quote- or bundle-based. It may be more platform than a small contractor needs. Treat model coordination and task management as related but distinct requirements: verify that the proposed setup supports the actual field task workflow, not only model or document access.

Buildertrend: best for residential builders and remodelers
Best for: Home builders, remodelers, and design-build firms that want task tracking alongside client communication and residential project workflows.
Buildertrend lists scheduling, daily logs, tasks, time clock, change orders, selections, subcontractor and client portals, warranties, file storage and messaging, estimates, budgets, bids, purchase orders, invoices, and takeoff. Its site also lists integrations including QuickBooks, Xero, and Gusto. The current official pricing page uses custom quotes and advertises unlimited users and projects. See Buildertrend’s product overview and pricing page.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Trade-off: Pricing is not public on the cited page, and the client, sales, estimating, and financial features may be unnecessary for field crews seeking only task assignment. Commercial GCs should compare its specific document, RFI, submittal, and cost-control requirements with Procore or Autodesk rather than assuming residential breadth is equivalent.
Choose it when client-facing work, selections, schedules, estimates, and change orders are part of the same residential operating process. If price transparency or a narrow task workflow is the priority, compare JobTread or Fieldwire.
JobTread: best transparent-price all-in-one option for smaller contractors
Best for: Small and midsize builders and contractors who need more than task tracking, especially job costing, estimating, change orders, scheduling, and customer or vendor communication.
JobTread lists budgeting, job costing, change orders, purchase and work orders, AIA payment applications, vendor and subcontractor billing, customer invoices, dashboards, portals, selections and allowances, messaging, QuickBooks Online, Zapier, and other integrations. Its pricing page showed a $199 monthly base price plus $20 per month for each additional internal user; it also advertises no contract or setup fee, included implementation, training, and support, annual-subscription savings of 20%, and a 30-day money-back guarantee for monthly subscriptions. Prices are shown in U.S. dollars. The page says external customer and vendor portal users are unlimited and describes free access for certain field activities, such as uploading pictures, logging daily notes, viewing schedules, and checking off tasks. Confirm which users count as internal and which field permissions cover your workflow at JobTread pricing.
Trade-off: Calculate the total using your internal-user count; $199 is the base, not necessarily the full monthly bill. The broader business platform may be excessive for a one-person operation or a team that only needs punch lists.

Raken: best for daily reports and field visibility
Best for: Field teams whose priority is capturing daily reports, time cards, production data, toolbox talks, checklists, or observations.
Raken’s official page describes mobile field data collection, digital daily reports, time cards, production tracking, toolbox talks, checklists, observations, insights, integrations, onboarding, and support. Its public page did not expose a usable price in the reviewed snapshot; see Raken pricing for current contact and plan information.
Trade-off: Daily reporting and workforce data are not the same as plan-centric task coordination or a complete construction-management suite. Check whether Raken’s exact modules cover your tasks, drawings, and administration needs, or whether it should sit alongside an existing PM system.
Choose it when field reporting and production visibility are the central problem, rather than assuming it replaces every project-management workflow.
monday.com: best generic work-management alternative
Best for: Small teams already using monday.com, or organizations that want construction and non-construction work in configurable boards.
The pricing page showed a free plan for up to two seats and annual-billing prices of $9 per seat per month for Basic and $12 for Standard. The free plan lists up to three boards and docs, templates, mobile apps, and limited column types. Check monday.com pricing for current plan details.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Trade-off: A generic board is not automatically a drawing-linked task, RFI, submittal, punch-list, or job-costing system. Your team may need to build and maintain templates, statuses, automations, permissions, forms, and reports. Test offline work, photo and document handling, subcontractor access, audit history, and exports before relying on it for jobsite records.

Choose it when flexible task and process management is enough and someone can own configuration. If construction-native plan workflows are essential, start with Fieldwire instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which option fits your company?
- Small contractor replacing texts or spreadsheets: Start with Fieldwire if the task list is field- and plan-based. Consider JobTread if estimating, job costing, and change orders are also missing.
- Custom-home builder or remodeler: Compare Buildertrend and JobTread. Focus on client portal, selections, estimating, scheduling, change orders, and the internal-user cost—not just task features.
- Specialty trade contractor: Fieldwire is a sensible first evaluation for task assignment and punch work. If daily reports, time cards, and production capture are the bigger need, evaluate Raken.
- Mid-sized or large commercial GC: Compare Procore and Autodesk Build around document control, RFIs, submittals, cost controls, integrations, permissions, and project governance.
- BIM-heavy design-build firm: Evaluate Autodesk’s exact bundle and test the handoff from model or issue context to field task and closeout.
- Field-only reporting team with an existing PM system: Consider Raken as a reporting and data-capture layer, and verify how records integrate or export to the main system.
- Owner or developer: Prioritize stakeholder access, permissions, audit history, reporting, and data retention alongside task assignment; compare enterprise platforms rather than choosing only on per-user price.
- Civil or infrastructure contractor: Do not infer fit from a product’s commercial-building features alone. Pilot with the actual location, asset, inspection, and field-reporting workflows your projects require.
Features that matter in the field
- Plan and location context: Can a user create or find a task from the current drawing, room, floor, or asset? Is the drawing revision clear, and does task history remain understandable after an update?
- Punch lists and inspections: Can the team assign deficiencies by trade, capture evidence, verify completion, and run a closeout meeting without duplicating records?
- Mobile and offline behavior: Test precisely what is available without connectivity, whether photos queue, how conflicting edits resolve, and whether users can tell when data or drawings are stale. Do not assume “mobile app” means a complete offline workflow.
- Evidence and audit trail: Check photos, attachments, markup, timestamps, status history, authorship, and export. A stored drawing is not necessarily revision control or a usable dispute record.
- Look-ahead scheduling and dependencies: Test whether the tool supports the team’s actual short-interval planning and can show how blocked tasks affect downstream work.
- Construction administration: For GCs, check whether RFIs, submittals, change orders, budgets, and document control are included in the intended tier or require separate modules.
- Daily reports and labor: Determine whether task updates connect to daily logs, time cards, and production reporting—or whether users will enter the same information twice.
- Permissions and external access: Verify what subcontractors, owners, clients, and field-only users can see, edit, or upload, and whether those accounts are billable.
- Integrations and data portability: Distinguish a real synchronized integration from an export, link, marketplace connector, or API. Ask how to export task histories and attachments if you leave.
- Adoption and administration: Count the time needed to configure forms, statuses, templates, permissions, and reports. A low subscription can still impose substantial administrative work.
How to compare cost fairly
The prices in this market use different bases and should not be compared as if they were equivalent. A per-user task product, a base subscription plus internal users, and an annual contract priced by construction volume cover different scopes.
- Free or limited tiers: Fieldwire Basic is listed as free within limits of users, projects, and sheets; monday.com lists a free plan for up to two seats. Check whether the limits fit a real pilot.
- Per-user subscriptions: Fieldwire and monday.com publish per-user prices. Note billing frequency and plan-specific features before estimating an annual total.
- Base plus user fees: JobTread’s cited model starts at $199 per month and adds $20 per month for each additional internal user. Include your team’s actual internal-user count.
- Custom quotes or bundles: Procore, Autodesk, and Buildertrend use quote- or bundle-based purchasing in the cited information. Compare the precise products, modules, user rules, onboarding, and renewal terms in the proposal.
- Implementation and operating cost: Include data migration, training, workflow configuration, internal administration, integrations, and any duplicate entry between systems.
Before comparing offers, write down currency, geography, billing frequency, number and type of users, included modules, setup or implementation charges, and the date of the quote. Procore’s annual construction-volume model, Buildertrend’s custom quote, and Fieldwire’s per-user tiers cannot be compared by headline price alone. Recheck all prices directly with vendors; the snapshot in this article was checked August 18, 2026.
Run a practical pilot before committing
Pick one active project and use real work rather than a polished demo scenario. Test:
- Upload the current drawings and confirm users can identify the active revision.
- Create several real deficiency tasks, each with an owner, trade, due date, location, and useful description.
- Assign one task to a foreman or subcontractor and add a photo or other evidence.
- Update task status from a phone, including under weak or absent connectivity; check what works offline and what syncs later.
- Build a short look-ahead and use the tool in a punch-list or coordination meeting.
- Export a report and inspect whether task history, attachments, dates, and responsibility remain usable.
- Close a task, verify who approved completion, and confirm the record can be retained for closeout or warranty reference.
Ask five field users to complete the same workflow without coaching. Track time to create and find assigned work, completion rates, duplicate tasks, missed notifications, and whether crews update status without office prompting. Also ask the PM whether the resulting record is useful without retyping it elsewhere. This is an evaluation method, not a claim that any product has been tested here.
Common buying mistakes
- Buying a full suite for an undefined process: Software cannot decide who owns each task or establish a daily update routine for you. Define responsibility and closure rules first.
- Ignoring field adoption: A feature-rich system fails if crews will not open it, find work, attach evidence, and close items. Include actual users in the pilot.
- Assuming offline support: Verify the exact device, plan, and workflow. Test drawing access, queued photos, sync conflicts, and stale-data warnings.
- Confusing document storage with document control: Confirm revision handling, permissions, markup, plan-linked tasks, and history separately.
- Treating “unlimited users” as unlimited value: Module limits, annual construction-volume pricing, external-user rules, implementation, and API or support terms may still matter.
- Underestimating generic-tool upkeep: Configurable boards need an owner for templates, automations, statuses, reporting, and permissions. Include that labor in the cost.
- Creating disconnected systems: Check whether integrations truly synchronize records or only pass links and exports. Repeated entry across estimating, accounting, reporting, photos, and tasks can erase savings.
- Comparing unlike prices: Do not compare an annual-volume enterprise contract with a per-seat plan without accounting for scope, billing, modules, and implementation.
How to make the final choice
If your core need is assigning and closing field tasks and punch items, evaluate Fieldwire first. If you need enterprise project controls and multi-party governance, compare Procore and Autodesk against your required modules. If you build or remodel homes and need client-facing selections and business workflows, compare Buildertrend and JobTread. If reports, time cards, and production visibility are the priority, evaluate Raken. Choose monday.com only when configurable generic work management is acceptable and your team is ready to maintain the construction-specific setup.
Shortlist one or two products, confirm the current quote and exact permissions, and run the same live-project workflow with field users. The best tool is the one that fits the company’s actual construction process and produces records people reliably use—not the one with the longest feature list.
