If iTunes does not recognize your iPhone, first check the cable, unlock the phone, and approve the trust prompt. The right app also depends on your computer: on Windows, use Apple Devices or iTunes; on a modern Mac, find the iPhone in Finder instead. These steps diagnose the connection without erasing your iPhone.
Start with a cable that supports data, plug directly into the computer, and try another USB port. If the phone charges but remains missing, continue with trust settings and the Apple software or drivers on the computer.
What “not recognized” can tell you
Charging and data are separate functions: an iPhone can charge through a cable that cannot transfer data. The symptom helps narrow down what to check first.

1. Use a data-capable cable and connect directly
- Disconnect the iPhone and check its charging port for visible lint or debris. Do not force objects into the port.
- Reconnect with a cable that supports both charging and data transfer. Charging alone does not establish that the cable can carry data.
- Plug the cable directly into the computer, not through a hub, dock, monitor, keyboard, or other adapter.
- Try another USB port, and if available, test with another known-good data cable.
A connection sound or vibration is a useful sign, but the iPhone still needs to appear in the correct Apple app. If there is no response with multiple cables and ports, test another computer before concluding the phone needs repair.
2. Unlock the iPhone and approve trust
- Disconnect the iPhone, unlock it, and leave it on the Home Screen.
- Reconnect it directly to the computer.
- When “Trust This Computer?” appears, tap Trust and enter the passcode if asked.
If you previously tapped Don’t Trust, or the prompt never appears, reset the pairing authorization on the iPhone: open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. Menu wording can vary slightly by iOS version. This resets privacy permissions and trust-related authorizations; it is not a factory reset and does not erase personal data. Reconnect the phone and approve the prompt.
If the phone is disabled, stuck during startup, or unable to reach the Home Screen, ordinary trust approval may not be possible. That calls for a separate recovery or service diagnosis, not just a change to iTunes settings.

3. Open the right Apple app
On Windows
Open Apple Devices and look for the iPhone in the sidebar. If you use iTunes, open it and look for the device button near the top of the window. Apple lists both apps for Windows, so check the one you have installed. For a clean test, close the other device-management app and try one at a time; this is an isolation step, not proof that the apps always conflict.
On a modern Mac
Open Finder and select the iPhone in the sidebar. If the sidebar is hidden, choose View > Show Sidebar. If macOS asks “Allow accessory to connect?”, click Allow, then approve the trust prompt on the iPhone. Depending on the Mac’s macOS version, iTunes may still be the right app on older systems.
Apple’s current connection instructions explain where to find a device in Windows apps or Finder. Seeing the iPhone is only recognition; it does not guarantee that syncing, photo import, backup, update, or restore will succeed.

4. Update software and the Windows driver
Out-of-date software can cause compatibility problems. Check for updates to iOS or iPadOS, Windows, and the Apple app you use—Apple Devices or iTunes. Updating is a recommended compatibility check, not a guarantee that it will fix detection.
On Windows, inspect the device entry in Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand relevant categories, such as Portable Devices and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for an iPhone, Apple device, or Apple Mobile Device USB Driver entry.
- Right-click the relevant entry and choose Update driver, following the available Windows prompts.
- Restart Windows, then reconnect the iPhone.
Labels and entries can vary with the Windows and Apple software versions installed. Do not download “iPhone drivers” from third-party driver sites; use Windows Device Manager and official Apple software.

5. Restart Apple components on Windows
First close iTunes, Apple Devices, File Explorer windows showing the phone, and other phone-management utilities. Restart the computer, wait for Windows to load fully, and reconnect the unlocked iPhone. If detection still fails, repair or reinstall the relevant Apple software from its official source rather than manually replacing driver files.
Advanced check: Press Win + R, enter services.msc, and check whether Apple Mobile Device Service is present and running. If it is present but stopped, restarting it can help diagnose an Apple-component issue. The service may not appear in every installation, and this check is not a substitute for the cable, app, or driver checks.

Third-party device utilities may depend on Apple components. For example, iMazing’s Windows troubleshooting guidance recommends addressing Apple mobile-device services and notes that VPNs, firewalls, or antivirus software can interfere with its recognition process. Treat security software as a possible factor, not a proven cause of every Apple app detection problem. If you temporarily change a security setting to test, restore it afterward. Avoid registry edits, unofficial driver packages, and deleting system folders.

6. Test another computer to locate the fault
Use another USB port and data cable, then connect the iPhone to another Windows PC or Mac if one is available. If possible, also test another iPhone on the original computer. Note whether the phone charges, makes a connection sound, appears in Finder or an Apple Windows app, or disconnects repeatedly.
- It works on another computer: Focus on the original computer’s Apple software, driver, USB port, or security configuration. Do not erase or restore the iPhone just because one computer cannot see it.
- It fails everywhere with multiple data cables: The iPhone port, device software, or hardware may be involved. After inspecting the port, seek Apple or authorized service if detection still fails.
- It has no charging or connection response: Try a known-good cable and port. If there is still no response, arrange a hardware assessment.
- The computer sees the iPhone, but backup, update, or restore fails: That is a different problem from recognition. Record any error message and follow troubleshooting for that specific error rather than repeating connection fixes.
When to contact Apple
Consider Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if the iPhone remains unrecognized on multiple computers with known-good data cables, its port appears damaged or obstructed, it repeatedly disconnects, or it has no reliable USB response. If it is detected but shows a recovery, update, or restore error, pursue the specific error separately. Available repair options and costs depend on model, region, warranty, AppleCare coverage, and damage. Check Apple repair options, repair and service information, or the service-provider locator.
