A VALORANT update showing 0.1 KB/s is not automatically a dead download. Riot Client may be unpacking, verifying, or writing patch files while the network-speed figure stays near zero. First compare the update percentage with network, CPU, and disk activity; then work through the five fixes below in order. Reinstall only after the safer checks fail.
First, determine whether it is really stuck
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- In Processes or Performance, watch Riot Client, VALORANT and the drive containing the game.
- If disk or CPU activity continues and the percentage occasionally advances, the client may be applying files locally. Do not cancel immediately.
- If network, CPU and disk activity are all negligible, the percentage never changes, or Riot Client is unresponsive, begin troubleshooting.
There is no universal “safe waiting” time: patch size, storage speed, free space, antivirus scanning and Riot-server load vary.
1. Check Riot status and let local patching finish
Open the Riot Games Service Status page, select your region and check VALORANT incidents. If Riot reports an outage, waiting is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling. A green page only makes a broad platform outage less likely; it does not rule out regional routing, DNS, firewall or account-specific problems.

During an update, the client can alternate between downloading, decompressing, verifying and writing files. Community reports describe normal speeds dropping to 0.1 KB/s while disk activity remains high; this is observed behavior, not a universal Riot-documented rule. Leave the client open while the percentage or installation activity still changes.

2. Restart Riot Client and remove resource conflicts
- Use any pause control in Riot Client, then exit the client from the system tray.
- Confirm it has closed; if necessary, end remaining Riot Client processes in Task Manager.
- Pause Steam, Epic Games, Microsoft Store, Battle.net and other downloads.
- Pause OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox syncing, and stop large browser downloads or streams.
- Close third-party game boosters or network-optimization utilities.
- Restart Windows, reopen Riot Client and resume the update.
These programs can compete for bandwidth, disk or file access, but they are only possible contributors—not a guaranteed cause. Riot’s troubleshooting guidance also supports closing competing applications and using a clean startup when background software interferes.
3. Check firewall and antivirus blocking
Security software can block Riot Client, VALORANT or Vanguard from reaching update servers. Allowing the client through the firewall is safer than turning protection off.
- Open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection → Allow an app through firewall.
- Select Change settings and allow Riot Client on the network profiles appropriate to your setup.
- Resume the update. If you need to add an executable manually, browse to your actual Riot/VALORANT installation folder; locations differ between installations.
- If a third-party antivirus is installed, temporarily disable only its web or network protection as a diagnostic test.
- Re-enable antivirus protection immediately after testing.
Do not permanently disable Windows Defender, Vanguard or firewall protection. Do not add random files or download “firewall fixes.”
4. Reset the network path
Riot recommends checking the connection, avoiding VPN/proxy interference, trying Ethernet, renewing the IP address, flushing DNS and, where appropriate, testing public DNS.

- Disconnect from a VPN. In Windows, check Settings → Network & internet → Proxy and disable a manually configured proxy.
- Restart the router and PC. If possible, test wired Ethernet instead of Wi‑Fi.
- Open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdnsRestart Windows and retry. You can also test a phone hotspot briefly. If the hotspot works while home Wi‑Fi does not, the router, ISP route, DNS path or network filtering is more likely than a damaged game installation.
If needed, try public DNS:
- Google DNS:
8.8.8.8and8.8.4.4 - Cloudflare DNS:
1.1.1.1and1.0.0.1
Change DNS through your adapter’s IPv4 settings, then retry. DNS may resolve routing or name-resolution failures; it cannot increase a congested server’s capacity. Riot notes that some ISPs may not work well with third-party DNS, so return to automatic DNS if connectivity worsens.
5. Reinstall VALORANT and Riot Vanguard
Use this last. Reinstalling is slow and will not fix a firewall, ISP or router problem.
- Open Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Add or remove programs).
- Uninstall Riot Vanguard, then uninstall VALORANT.
- Confirm both entries are gone and restart the PC.
- Download the installer from the official VALORANT website.
- Install VALORANT and allow Vanguard to install; restart again if prompted.
Use Run as administrator only when Riot’s instructions for a specific dependency or anti-cheat installation problem call for it. Do not configure the game executable to always run as administrator as a generic download fix.

Check storage before reinstalling
Keep free space on both the game’s installation drive and the Windows system drive. Patch installation can require temporary working space beyond the displayed update size. A busy, slow or unhealthy drive can make a transfer appear idle while files are being written. An SSD is not established here as a universal VALORANT requirement.
Avoid risky “fixes”
Do not start by deleting random AppData, manifest or Vanguard files, removing the entire Riot Games folder, changing registry values, disabling security permanently, manually disabling Vanguard services, port-forwarding, or reinstalling Windows. Riot documents cache cleanup and reinstalling for particular errors, but paths and procedures vary; use them only when the relevant Riot instruction matches your symptom.
When to contact Riot
If a clean reinstall still returns to 0.1 KB/s, submit a ticket through Riot Support. Include your Riot ID and region, patch or version context, the percentage where it stops, whether disk activity continues, results with Ethernet or a hotspot, other-launcher behavior, and VPN/firewall/antivirus status. Attach Riot Repair Tool logs when support requests them.

Why is VALORANT stuck at 0.1 KB/s while Steam works?
Steam working makes a general internet failure less likely. Check Riot status, firewall or antivirus permissions, Riot Client processes, and test without VPN/proxy. Also watch disk activity because VALORANT may be applying files locally.

Should I leave VALORANT running at 0.1 KB/s?
Yes, if the percentage, disk activity or CPU activity still changes. If all activity and progress remain unchanged and the client is unresponsive, restart it and begin the troubleshooting sequence.
Will changing DNS increase VALORANT download speed?
Not generally. Public DNS can help resolution or routing-related failures, but it cannot speed up a congested Riot server or a saturated connection.
Should I delete Riot Vanguard?
Only as part of Riot’s supported clean reinstall sequence, after safer network and security checks fail. Uninstall Vanguard normally, restart, then reinstall VALORANT from Riot’s official site.

Does running Riot Client as administrator fix the download?
Not as a general rule. Riot limits administrative installation to certain dependency or anti-cheat scenarios, and another Riot instruction warns against permanently configuring the game to always run as administrator.

Do I need to reinstall the whole game?
Usually not. Check status, local patch activity, competing applications, firewall, antivirus and network path first. Reinstall only when those steps fail or the installation repeatedly corrupts.
What if Riot’s status page is green?
A green status page rules out only a declared broad incident. Regional ISP routing, DNS, firewall, storage and installation-specific problems can still cause the update to stall.
The Bottom Line
Start by checking whether 0.1 KB/s is merely local patching. Then restart the client, remove competing processes, verify firewall and antivirus access, reset the network path, and reserve a VALORANT/Vanguard reinstall for last. If that fails, send Riot the relevant network results and Repair Tool logs.
