For a dedicated Android home-screen currency widget, choose ExchangeWidget. For travel conversions with offline support, Currency Converter Plus Live is the more complete toolkit; for rate alerts or transfers, consider Xe; for comparing transfer rates and fees, Wise; and for charts and trend alerts, Forex currency converter. These apps serve different purposes: a displayed reference rate is not necessarily the rate a bank, card, ATM, or transfer service will give you.

What “currency tracking” can mean
Before choosing an app, decide what you need it to do:
- Convert: Find the approximate value of an amount, such as 100 euros in U.S. dollars.
- Track: Follow how a pair has moved over time.
- Alert: Get a notification when a displayed rate reaches a target.
- Plan a transaction: See what a bank, card, ATM, or money-transfer provider will actually charge or deliver.
The first three are information features. The last depends on the provider, transaction route, fees, spreads, and other terms. A tracking app’s reference rate is not a guarantee of an available exchange or transfer rate.

1. ExchangeWidget: best dedicated Android currency widget
ExchangeWidget is the clearest pick if your priority is seeing a few conversions without opening an app. Its home-screen widget can show up to three selected conversions, including custom or preset amounts. A green, yellow, or red indicator signals how fresh the displayed data is.
The developer says the app supports more than 170 currencies and precious metals, sources rates from the European Central Bank through frankfurter.dev, and requires no account. Its May 2026 update added cached rates for offline-first use and improvements for Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO widget reliability.
Keep in mind: Offline means the widget may show the last fetched rate, not a current one. ECB-based reference data is useful for comparisons but is not a quote from a bank or transfer provider. The Google Play data-safety statement that no personal data is collected is the developer’s declaration, not an independent privacy audit. The app is newer and has a smaller apparent footprint than established services such as Xe or Wise. The listing also mentions an ad-free paywall; check Google Play for current terms and price.
Choose it for: A lightweight, no-account widget for a small number of currency pairs. Skip it for: sending money, holding balances, transaction-linked alerts, or a professional trading workflow.
2. Currency Converter Plus Live: best all-round travel converter
Currency Converter Plus Live combines a home-screen widget with conversion tools, a calculator, multiple-currency comparison, historical charts, and offline rate support. Its listing advertises support for 180-plus currencies, cryptocurrencies, and precious metals, though the listing has used differing currency totals in different sections. Treat the exact count as an advertised figure, and confirm that a particular currency is supported.

The app says its rates are powered by the developer’s AccuRate service. It offers charts spanning roughly a week to five years. Offline conversion is handy while travelling, but relies on rates fetched earlier; refresh while online before using a figure for a purchase or cash exchange.
The listing reports ads and in-app purchases. Some recent Google Play reviews complain about paid-feature limits, purchase entitlements, and support responsiveness. Those are user reports, not independently verified findings, but they are worth considering before buying an upgrade. Store ratings, download totals, update dates, and purchase terms can change.

3. Xe Money Transfer & Currency: best for rate alerts and transfers
Xe combines currency conversion and rate tracking with target-rate alerts and international transfers. That makes it more useful than a basic converter if you are monitoring a pair before sending money, paying an overseas bill, or making another transfer.
The listing advertises transfers to more than 190 countries in over 130 currencies. Those figures do not mean every route or feature is available to every user: destinations, balances, payment methods, fees, and speeds vary with location, account eligibility, verification, and transaction details. The app contains ads. Xe’s current listing also says rooted Android devices are not supported for security reasons.

A rate alert means the app’s tracked rate reached a threshold; it does not reserve that rate for your transfer. The final customer rate and recipient amount can differ because of the spread, fees, payment method, route, and timing. The current listing supports tracking and alerts, but does not establish a home-screen widget, so check the installed Android version rather than choosing Xe on the assumption that it has one.
Choose it for: rate alerts and an app that also offers international transfers. Skip it for: a simple, no-account home-screen display.
4. Wise Currency Converter: best for comparing rates and fees
The dedicated Wise Currency Converter app tracks rates, lets you save favorite currencies, and shows historical movement over periods of up to 500 days. Its listing also describes comparing providers and viewing rates and fees before sending or converting money.
Keep the two Wise apps distinct. The converter is for rate information; Wise’s separate international-transfer app handles transfer and multi-currency account features where available. The converter’s listing does not establish an Android home-screen widget. Wise also offers a website FX widget, but that is for websites and is not evidence of a home-screen Android widget.
Seeing a rate and fee estimate can help with a decision, but the final amount depends on the currency route, amount, payment method, destination, verification, and timing. Wise is not a currency-trading platform.

Choose it for: checking rate history and comparing what a provider may charge before sending money. Skip it for: an offline travel utility or a widget-first setup.
5. Forex currency converter: best for charts and rate trends
Forex currency converter is aimed at readers who want to monitor movement rather than only calculate a travel purchase. Its listing says rates update every minute, and describes a separate widget showing the selected pair’s rate and trend. It also offers notifications for sharp moves, charts for periods from an hour to a year, and historical rates for previous years.
The app advertises support for world currencies and an unlimited number of currencies in a portfolio. It is free and advertising-supported, with no in-app purchases shown in the listing. Its update frequency and coverage are developer claims, not a guarantee of real-time execution prices; an advertised forex rate may not be available to you through a bank or exchange service. Battery and data use also depend on refresh behavior, Android background limits, and the phone maker’s software.
Choose it for: a trend widget, charts, and sharp-move notifications. Skip it for: a minimal travel calculator or a tool to execute transactions.

- Install the app from its Google Play listing and open it once.
- Long-press an empty area of your home screen and tap Widgets. The exact label and steps vary by launcher and Android version.
- Find the app in the widget picker, then long-press or drag its widget onto the home screen.
- Choose the currency pair and amount, and adjust the size or refresh settings if the app offers those options.
- Refresh the app while online before relying on a displayed value for a transaction.
Widgets do not behave identically on every Android phone. Launcher support, background data, battery restrictions, permissions, and manufacturer-specific software can affect refreshes and display. ExchangeWidget specifically describes improvements for Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices, but that is not a universal compatibility guarantee.

If a widget is blank or stops updating
- Open the full app and refresh while connected to the internet.
- Check that Android has not restricted the app’s background activity or data use.
- Review the phone’s battery optimization, autostart, and background-app settings for that app.
- Remove the widget and add it again; if needed, restart the launcher or phone.
- Check Google Play for an app update and confirm the launcher supports the widget.
- If the app is installed on an SD card and the widget fails to load, move it to internal storage and try again.
- Check the freshness indicator or last-update time. An unchanged number may be cached rather than current.
How to choose
- Want a small widget without an account? Start with ExchangeWidget.
- Want travel conversions, a calculator, charts, and offline fallback? Try Currency Converter Plus Live.
- Want a target-rate alert and transfer features? Consider Xe, after checking availability and costs for your route.
- Want to compare provider rates and fees before sending? Use Wise’s converter, then confirm details in the separate transfer product.
- Want charts, trend monitoring, and sharp-move notifications? Consider Forex currency converter.
For any app, check that the currency you need is supported, whether its data is live or cached, how old the displayed rate is, and whether an account or paid feature is required. A large currency count alone does not prove that every rate refreshes at the same frequency.
Check the rate before you trust the number
Reference rate: A rate used to describe or compare currency values. It may be a market-derived or other published rate, but is not necessarily what a consumer can transact at.
Customer rate: The rate a bank, exchange bureau, card issuer, or transfer provider offers. It may include a spread or markup. Transfer fees, ATM charges, card foreign-transaction fees, and weekend or out-of-hours charges can raise the effective cost further.

Offline functionality is useful, but the value can be stale.
Before acting on a rate, check the pair direction (USD/EUR is not EUR/USD), the timestamp, and the app’s rate type. Compare another reputable source if a value looks unusual. For an actual payment or transfer, check the provider’s final quote and fees. An ATM may offer dynamic currency conversion at a different rate, and a card issuer may apply its own conversion terms.
Other option: Revolut
Revolut may suit readers who want a broader financial app with balances and exchange features, rather than a lightweight tracking widget. Exchange costs can depend on plan, allowance, and timing; the terms also vary by market. For example, Revolut’s U.S. help page describes fees tied to market hours and fair-use allowances for certain customers. Consult the current fees and rate information for your country and plan, and compare the final quote for your transaction rather than assuming Revolut is always cheapest.
None of these apps should be treated as a substitute for a regulated trading platform, professional market-data terminal, or financial adviser. Choose a converter for estimates, a tracker for movements, and a financial provider only after checking its current transaction terms.
