The best MCP server is the one that fits a specific workflow with the least access necessary. For most developers, start with Filesystem or Git for local code, GitHub for hosted repository work, Fetch for known web pages, Playwright for browser tasks, a read-only database server for data analysis, and Memory for durable project facts. Add Google Drive or Slack only when your team needs those systems in an agent workflow.

This shortlist is workflow-oriented rather than a popularity ranking. MCP changes quickly: verify the current owner, package, transport, permissions and maintenance status immediately before installation. The verification notes below reflect the information available on September 30, 2026.

The 10 useful MCP servers at a glance

Server Best fit Owner or status Package or endpoint information Permission concern

1. Filesystem: the safest first local connector

Filesystem is the practical starting point when an agent needs to read, search or write files on your machine. Its key control is an explicit allow-list of directories. Start with a project directory, not your home directory, SSH folder or entire disk.

The reference launch pattern is:

npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem /path/to/project

Use a disposable checkout when testing write operations. Keep secrets outside the allowed path and make a backup before permitting writes.

2. GitHub MCP Server: hosted repository context

GitHub integration is useful when the agent must inspect issues, pull requests, repository files or code search results that are not present locally. The original reference implementation is archived, and current ownership is elsewhere, so do not copy an old configuration blindly. Identify the current vendor first, then create a token with only the repository and organization scopes required for the task.

Separate read-only analysis from actions such as opening issues, approving pull requests or pushing changes. Require a human confirmation step for those mutations.

3. Git MCP server: work directly on a checkout

Git MCP is preferable when the agent should operate on a local repository without sending work through a hosted provider. The documented Python-tool launch pattern is:

uvx mcp-server-git /path/to/repository

Point it at the smallest checkout that contains the task. A dedicated worktree makes rollback easy: inspect the diff, run tests, and commit manually rather than granting unrestricted control over unrelated repositories.

4. Fetch MCP server: efficient reading of known URLs

Fetch retrieves and converts web content so an agent can reason over a page without browser interaction. It is a good fit for documentation, specifications and other known URLs. It is not a replacement for broad web search, JavaScript-heavy interaction or authenticated workflows.

Check each site’s terms before automated retrieval. Do not send private URLs, credentials or sensitive page content to a server unless your data policy permits it.

5. Playwright MCP: browser navigation and UI checks

Microsoft’s Playwright MCP uses accessibility snapshots to give an agent structured browser context. It suits repeatable navigation, form interaction, regression checks and workflows where visible UI state matters more than raw HTML.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Browser tools can submit forms, delete records or trigger purchases. Use test accounts and staging environments, and require explicit confirmation before consequential actions. Keep browser sessions isolated from your personal profile and saved credentials.

6. PostgreSQL or DBHub: controlled database access

Choose PostgreSQL when your workflow is specifically PostgreSQL. DBHub is described as a universal gateway for PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, SQLite and MariaDB, which can simplify a mixed-database environment.

For exploration, issue a read-only database credential restricted to the required schema. Mask personal data, isolate production, and set query timeouts where your client supports them. Write or migration tools belong in a separately approved workflow, not in the default analyst connection.

7. Docker MCP Server: agent-assisted environment operations

The official Docker catalog entry is aimed at managing containers, images and Docker environments. It can reduce context switching during local development, but container actions may affect networks, volumes and host resources.

Use a non-production Docker context, limit mounted directories, and keep daemon access constrained. Treat image pulls and container starts as potentially untrusted supply-chain events: pin images according to your team’s policy and review commands before execution.

8. Google Drive MCP Server: search shared documents

Google Drive access helps document-heavy teams find material across personal and shared drives. The original reference implementation is archived, so verify the current vendor endpoint and OAuth application before authorizing access.

Review every requested OAuth scope, especially shared-drive access. Use a dedicated workspace account for experimentation, and remove the authorization grant when the project ends.

9. Slack MCP Server: context first, posting second

Slack integration can retrieve channel context and help draft operational updates. Sending messages is a separate risk from reading them. Keep read and write capabilities distinct, require confirmation before posting, and audit workspace scopes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The original reference implementation is archived and its README points to another maintainer. Confirm the maintainer, endpoint and retention policy before connecting a production workspace.

10. Memory MCP server: durable facts across conversations

Memory stores entities and relationships in a knowledge graph so project facts and preferences survive an individual conversation. The reference README demonstrates:

npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-memory

Define what may be remembered before enabling it. Do not persist credentials, regulated data or temporary speculation. Provide a documented reset and deletion procedure so a user can remove an incorrect or outdated fact.

How to choose between similar servers

When two servers appear to solve the same problem, compare them on these axes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Workflow fit: Does it perform the exact read or action your agent needs?
  • Execution location: Is data handled locally, by a hosted vendor, or both?
  • Mutation surface: Can it only read, or can it write, post, delete, deploy or send?
  • Authentication: What token, OAuth grant, database credential or custom header is required?
  • Data sensitivity: Can you keep private or regulated data inside an approved boundary?
  • Maintenance: Who owns the current project, and are releases and security fixes active?
  • Client compatibility: Does your MCP client support its transport and tool format?
  • Installation friction: Is a package manager enough, or is a vendor account and callback configuration required?
  • Rollback: Can you revoke credentials, undo writes and delete stored data?

There is no defensible universal popularity ranking. A server with fewer users can still be the right choice when it has narrower permissions and a better maintenance owner for your workflow.

Install and freshness checklist

  1. Start discovery in the official MCP Registry, an open catalog and API intended as a primary source of truth for publicly available servers. The September 8, 2025 announcement described the service as a preview and warned that breaking changes could occur before general availability.
  2. Open the current listing and confirm the repository or vendor, package name, transport, authentication method, license and supported clients.
  3. Read the tool list and mark every mutating operation. Disable or omit tools you do not need.
  4. Create the narrowest credential possible: an allow-listed path, read-only database user, limited OAuth scope or repository-specific token.
  5. Install in an isolated environment, pin versions where your package manager supports it, and record the configuration in your team’s change log.
  6. Run a harmless read-only test, inspect logs, and verify which data leaves your machine.
  7. Document revocation, deletion and rollback before enabling writes.

“The MCP Registry serves as a primary source of truth for publicly available MCP servers, and organizations can choose to create sub-registries based on custom criteria.” — Model Context Protocol Registry announcement, September 8, 2025.

For screenshot workflows: Playwright or a purpose-built API

Use Playwright MCP when you need to navigate a page, interact with controls or validate accessibility-visible UI. If the actual requirement is a repeatable screenshot or PDF endpoint, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and includes an MCP server for AI agents.

Or skip the browser setup

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API accepts the URL and the capture options you need; the examples below use https://stripe.com. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete parameter list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo can load lazy images, capture one CSS-selected element, emulate dark mode and 12 device presets, set any viewport and retina scale, create PDFs with paper size, margins, landscape and page ranges, render HTML/CSS, run custom JavaScript, click before capture, hide selectors, wait for a selector, delay or network idle, block ads, trackers, requests or resource types, supply headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone and geolocation, use transparent backgrounds, resize images, cache with a chosen TTL, create signed links, run asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call, expose usage data and use an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work for easier migration.

Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. The MCP tools are take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Troubleshooting common failures

The client cannot start the server

Check that the package manager is installed, the command is spelled exactly, and the configured working directory exists. For npx or uvx, run the command manually and read stderr before changing client settings.

The agent sees no files or repository

The allowed path may be wrong, relative, outside the sandbox, or mounted read-only. Replace it with an absolute path and test a harmless directory listing. Do not solve the problem by granting the entire home directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Authentication succeeds but tools are missing

The token or OAuth grant may lack the required scope, or the current vendor may expose a different tool set than the archived reference server. Reopen the current listing, compare scopes and restart the MCP client after changing credentials.

A browser action changed real data

Move the workflow to staging, use a test account and remove write tools from the configuration. Add a confirmation gate before form submission, deletion, posting or payment.

Database queries expose too much data

Revoke the broad credential, create a read-only user restricted to the needed schema, and add masking or views. Keep production credentials out of local configuration files.

Stored memory is wrong or sensitive

Delete the offending entity, review the persistence policy and test the reset procedure. Memory should contain durable, appropriate project facts—not secrets or unverified assumptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the MCP Registry a finished, stable marketplace?

The September 8, 2025 announcement described it as a preview and warned that breaking changes could occur before general availability; treat listings as discovery aids and verify each vendor directly.

Should I install all ten servers at once?

No. Install the smallest set that serves a current workflow, then add one server at a time so permissions, data flows and failures remain understandable.

What is the safest default permission model?

Begin with read-only access and the narrowest path, repository, schema or OAuth scope. Enable writes only for a specific task with confirmation and rollback.

Can an MCP server replace normal application security controls?

No. MCP permissions should complement, not replace, network isolation, credential management, logging, backups and human approval for consequential actions.
