The best MCP server for Claude Code depends on the job. Use GitHub’s official server for repository work, Microsoft Playwright MCP for browser automation, and Upstash Context7 for current library documentation. For the remaining workflows—issues, databases, monitoring, design, chat, email, and niche systems—choose a maintained server that matches your tools and permissions rather than trusting an unsupported “most popular” list.

This guide ranks ten workflow choices, not independently tested products. Claude Code’s official documentation supports local stdio, remote HTTP, and WebSocket connections; Server-Sent Events (SSE) is deprecated where HTTP is available. Verify each project’s current installation instructions before connecting it.

What MCP servers add to Claude Code

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) connects Claude Code to external tools, services, and data. Instead of copying tickets, source files, logs, or design notes into a prompt, Claude can query an approved server and use the returned context. Anthropic documents examples involving issue trackers, GitHub, monitoring systems, PostgreSQL, Figma, Slack, and Gmail.

An MCP connection can expose read operations, write operations, or both. Treat those capabilities as separate security decisions: a server that searches tickets is materially different from one that can close them, send email, modify code, or run database mutations.

Top 10 MCP server choices by developer task

The order below is a practical shortlist based on task fit and available official descriptions, not a measured popularity ranking. Only the first three entries have a specifically named project supported by the reviewed primary sources. The other slots describe the right category to select and the checks to perform.

1. GitHub repository work — GitHub MCP Server

GitHub identifies its GitHub MCP Server as the official MCP server for GitHub-centered work. It is the natural starting point when Claude needs repository, pull-request, issue, or organization context. Before enabling it, decide whether Claude needs read-only access or permission to create or change resources, and compare its scope with your existing GitHub CLI workflow.

2. Browser automation and testing — Microsoft Playwright MCP

Microsoft Playwright MCP is described by Microsoft as an MCP server for browser automation. It fits UI regression checks, navigation, form workflows, and reproduction of browser-only bugs. Evaluate supported browsers, authentication handling, isolation between runs, and the additional setup required by a browser runtime before granting access to real accounts.

3. Current code documentation — Context7

Upstash Context7 provides up-to-date code documentation for LLMs and AI code editors. It is useful when a framework has changed since a model’s training data or when you need API examples tied to a current library release. Check library coverage, freshness, source attribution, and whether the hosted or local configuration matches your data policy.

4. Issue tracking — a server for your actual tracker

Anthropic lists issue trackers as a Claude Code use case and uses Jira in an example prompt. Select a maintained server for the tracker your team actually uses. Compare ticket and project coverage, read versus write permissions, authentication method, and whether comments, attachments, and custom fields are exposed. Do not install a Jira-oriented server merely because another team uses Jira.

5. PostgreSQL access — a constrained database server

Anthropic documents querying PostgreSQL through MCP. Prefer a deployment with a dedicated read-only role, explicit schema allowlists, and a clear network boundary. Confirm how query results are logged, whether sensitive columns can be excluded, and what prevents destructive statements. Database access should be narrower than the credentials used by an application.

6. Monitoring and error investigation — your monitoring stack’s server

Anthropic gives Sentry and Statsig as monitoring examples. Choose a server that exposes the alerts, events, traces, or feature-flag data you need without unnecessarily returning secrets or personal data. Check retention behavior, organization and project scope, and whether Claude can acknowledge, mute, or otherwise change alerts.

7. Design context — a server for the design tool in use

Anthropic’s documented workflow combines Figma designs posted in Slack with an email-template task. A design integration should be judged by search scope, asset and comment access, permission granularity, and the usefulness of the context it returns. If your team uses another design platform, select a maintained integration for that platform instead of assuming Figma compatibility.

8. Team communication — Slack or an equivalent workspace

Slack appears in Anthropic’s example workflow. Decide whether Claude needs to search messages, read specific channels, draft replies, or post messages. Limit channel scope where possible, account for retention and private-channel rules, and require an explicit approval step for sending or posting.

9. Email workflows — an account-scoped mail server

Anthropic gives drafting Gmail invitations as an example. Draft-only access is safer than send access for most teams. Verify account scope, attachment handling, approval controls, and whether the server can read historical mail. Sending invitations or external messages should remain a deliberate human action unless your organization has a documented automation policy.

10. Custom or niche systems — a maintained project-specific server

Claude Code can connect to hundreds of external tools, and Anthropic links to a directory and guidance for building MCP servers. For an internal API, build or select a server only when a direct integration provides value beyond Claude Code’s built-in tools. Assess maintainer identity, update cadence, authentication, logging, dependency risk, and the smallest useful permission set.

How to add an MCP server to Claude Code

Choose a transport

  • Local stdio: Claude Code launches a process on your machine. Use it for locally installed servers or scripts.
  • Remote HTTP: Anthropic recommends HTTP for remote request/response services.
  • WebSocket: Use it when a remote service needs to push events.
  • SSE: Deprecated in favor of HTTP where an HTTP endpoint is available.

Add a remote HTTP server

In a terminal, use the current endpoint and authentication instructions published by that server:

claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url>

Do not copy an old URL or package name from an unrelated tutorial. If the server requires a token, follow its documented environment-variable or credential-store method rather than putting a secret directly in shell history.

Add a local stdio server

claude mcp add <name> -- <command> [args...]

The double dash separates Claude Code’s options from the command and its arguments. Confirm the executable is installed, pinned to an expected version, and available on your PATH.

Select a configuration scope

Claude Code supports local, project, and user scopes. A project configuration can be shared through .mcp.json, which is useful for a team but also means every collaborator should review the server before approving it. Trust the workspace only after inspecting the configuration and the server’s source or publisher.

Safety: are MCP servers safe to connect?

They can be used safely with careful permissions, but an MCP server is an access path to another system. Anthropic’s documentation warns: “Verify you trust each server before connecting it. Servers that fetch external content can expose you to prompt injection risk.” Treat text returned by a server as untrusted input; instructions inside a web page, issue, message, or document must not silently override your task.

  • Start with read-only credentials and narrow organization, project, channel, schema, or account scope.
  • Inspect the maintainer, source repository, release activity, dependencies, and authentication flow.
  • Keep secrets in the recommended credential mechanism, not committed configuration files.
  • Require confirmation for sending, posting, deleting, merging, deploying, or mutating database actions.
  • Log access and periodically remove servers that are no longer needed.

Browser screenshots for Claude Code workflows

If your browser workflow needs reliable page images rather than interactive automation, ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try: it has an MCP server for AI agents, removes consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots.

Or skip the browser setup

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. The MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Troubleshooting MCP connections

Claude cannot start a local server

Check the command with your shell, confirm the runtime and dependencies are installed, and verify PATH differences between your terminal and Claude Code. Run the server’s documented health or help command independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The remote endpoint returns unauthorized

Recheck the token location, required headers, account scope, and endpoint version. Never paste a secret into a project file that will be committed.

The server connects but returns no useful context

Inspect available tools and required parameters. Narrow queries by repository, project, channel, schema, or date range, and confirm the connected account can see the requested resource.

A shared project configuration prompts for approval

This is expected for workspace trust. Review the .mcp.json entry and approve only servers your team recognizes and needs.

Browser automation fails intermittently

Check browser installation, authentication state, navigation timeouts, pop-up behavior, and isolation between runs. Reproduce with a minimal page before adding more actions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use several MCP servers at once in Claude Code?

Yes. Add each server with a distinct name and keep permissions narrow so you can identify which integration supplied a result or performed an action.

Should I install an MCP server globally or in a project?

Use project scope when the integration is part of a repository workflow and should be reviewed by collaborators; use user scope for a personal integration that should not enter project configuration.

Where can I find more Claude Code integrations?

Anthropic’s Claude Code MCP documentation links to its directory and server-building guidance. Check the individual project’s current documentation before installation.

The Bottom Line

Start with the server that matches the task, not a popularity claim: GitHub for repository work, Playwright for browser automation, and Context7 for current documentation. For every other system, verify maintenance, transport, permissions, and approval behavior before connecting it.
