Try Chrome’s own Memory Saver before installing anything: open More → Settings → Performance, switch it on, and choose Moderate, Balanced, or Maximum. Add work-critical sites under Always keep these sites active. Extensions are useful when you need finer rules, manual discarding, session storage, or a way to close reading tabs entirely. Install only one automatic suspender at a time, and never treat suspension as a backup for unsaved work.
Quick comparison

Before installing: use Chrome Memory Saver
Chrome’s desktop Memory Saver deactivates eligible background tabs and reloads them when you return. Google documents three levels: Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum. The same Performance page lets you add exceptions for sites that must remain active. Chrome may leave tabs alone when they have active audio or video, calls, downloads, screen sharing, notifications, partially completed forms, pinned status, or connected devices. See Google’s instructions at Chrome Memory Saver settings.
To find the real consumers, open More → More tools → Task manager, sort by Memory footprint, and inspect both tabs and extensions. Google’s troubleshooting guide is at Chrome Task Manager.
Discarding versus suspending
Discarding asks Chromium to unload a background tab while retaining its tab and URL. Suspension commonly replaces the page with an extension-owned placeholder. Either approach normally requires a reload when restored, so transient form text, unsent messages, editor state, live dashboards, WebSocket connections, timers, and media can be interrupted. Chrome’s lifecycle limitations are described in its tab-discarding documentation. A session manager saves URLs or windows; it saves RAM only when the original tabs are actually closed or discarded.

Established picks
1. Auto Tab Discard — best overall
Auto Tab Discard automatically or manually unloads inactive tabs using Chrome’s native-style method. It supports hostname and regular-expression exclusions, protection for pinned or media-playing tabs, unsaved-content and power conditions, persistence across restarts, and optional YouTube timestamp handling. Its listing specifically distinguishes this approach from the older Great Suspender model. Install Auto Tab Discard.
Choose it for granular rules and manual control. Start conservatively: aggressive timeouts can disrupt web apps, and using it alongside an aggressive Memory Saver policy may cause more reloads than you want.
2. The Marvellous Suspender — best granular suspender
The Marvellous Suspender offers screenshot, blurred, and text-only suspended views, recovery after crashes or restarts, and a battery-aware power mode. The Chrome Web Store listing showed version 8.1.6, updated June 25, 2026 when checked. Install The Marvellous Suspender.
It suits readers migrating from the compromised original Great Suspender ecosystem, but it relies more on extension-managed state than native discarding. Exclude editors, calls, and authenticated applications before using short timeouts. Do not install unknown “Great Suspender” copies.

3. OneTab — best close-and-save workflow
OneTab converts open tabs into a single recoverable list, allowing individual or bulk restoration. Its publisher claims savings of up to 95% because the original tabs are closed; that is a publisher claim, not an independent benchmark. The publisher also states that URLs are not transmitted to OneTab or other parties. Install OneTab.
Use it for accumulated reading material, not live work. Restoring every entry at once recreates the load, and a URL list does not preserve unsaved forms, scroll position, temporary app state, or all login workflows.
4. Workona Tab Suspender — best for Workona users
Workona’s extension suspends tabs automatically or on demand, using elapsed time or an active-tab count. Workona says it does not store browser data, use it for advertising, or share it with third parties. Install Workona Tab Suspender.
It is a sensible choice when your projects already live in Workona workspaces. If you only need local tab unloading, its broader ecosystem may be unnecessary. “No memory” should not be read literally; suspension aims to remove most page workload while the extension itself still uses resources.

5. The Tab Suspender — explicit click-to-restore
The listing describes automatic suspension, native discarding, site rules, pause controls, and a default 40-minute inactivity period. A suspended tab does not automatically reload merely because it receives focus; you click to restore it. The listing showed version 2.0, updated July 7, 2026. Install The Tab Suspender.
Its small user base means compatibility, privacy, and performance statements are primarily developer-provided.
6. Tab Discard (Suspender) — simplest manual control
Use the toolbar menu to unload the current tab or all inactive tabs, then restore pages when you revisit them. Install Tab Discard (Suspender). The listing showed about 6,000 users when checked, with fewer visible safeguards than Auto Tab Discard.
7. Tab Suspender – Auto Tab Discard — basic timer
This lightweight option offers a one-minute-to-two-hour timer, a whitelist, and listing claims that pinned or audio-playing tabs are protected. Install Tab Suspender – Auto Tab Discard. With 554 users and one rating shown at checking time, reliability evidence is limited; its “significant” RAM reduction is not a measured guarantee.

8. Tab Manager — Sessions & Memory Saver — sessions plus suspension
It saves named sessions, searches open and saved tabs, suspends idle tabs, allowlists pinned/audio tabs and important sites, and supports import/export. Core features are advertised as offline and account-free. Install Tab Manager — Sessions & Memory Saver. It is useful for closing whole projects, but restoration cannot recreate every live application state.
9. Tab Suspender & Manager — broad free toolkit
Automatic suspension, domain whitelists, groups, duplicate detection, sessions, statistics, and shortcuts are combined in one extension. The listing says data is stored locally and works offline, with intervals from 30 seconds to one hour. Its “up to 80%” reduction is a developer claim. Install Tab Suspender & Manager.
Only 17 users were shown when checked, and the listing discloses web-history handling despite privacy-focused language. Treat it as experimental.
10. Web Boost / SuperchargePerformance — suspension plus blocking
This extension combines suspension with ad and tracker blocking, autoplay controls, site exceptions, and Chrome discard protection. Its listing claims up to 95% RAM freed by suspension and up to 50% lower active-tab memory from ad blocking; both are vendor claims, not universal results. Install Web Boost / SuperchargePerformance.

- Start with Memory Saver set to Balanced.
- Install one automatic extension, pin its toolbar icon, and choose a 30–60 minute delay rather than one or five minutes.
- Allowlist Docs, Sheets, Forms, mail compose, chat and video calls, music, monitoring dashboards, remote desktops, browser IDEs, and any page with unsaved data.
- Test a low-risk window first. Save or export important sessions before uninstalling or changing tools.
- In Chrome Task Manager, record the largest tab and extension processes, discard a controlled group, wait for the timeout, and measure again.
- Restore several tabs and verify logins, forms, scroll position, media, and application state. Disable the extension if reloads, CPU use, or broken apps outweigh the benefit.
Troubleshooting
Tabs reload too often
Increase the timeout, switch from Maximum to Balanced Memory Saver, and expand the allowlist. Keep only one automatic suspender enabled.
A page lost data
Reloads can erase typed forms, unsent mail, drafts, temporary checkout details, and local editor state. Recreate the work from an application backup if available, then permanently exclude that site. A suspender is not a backup system.
A tab will not suspend
Audio/video, calls, downloads, screen sharing, notifications, pinned status, connected devices, and active web tasks can make a tab ineligible. Check the extension’s exclusions and Chrome’s own protections.

Confirm that the original tabs were discarded or closed, not merely grouped. Check Chrome Task Manager for extension overhead and background processes. Extension performance can vary by design; independent research discusses effects on browser performance and energy use at arXiv: Chrome extension performance research.
Removing or replacing an extension
Export OneTab or session data first, disable the old extension, restart Chrome, and verify important windows before installing a replacement. Inspect publisher identity, update history, permissions, and data disclosures; avoid unpacked copies and unknown forks.
Quick Recap
