The best mobile game of 2024 depends on what you want to play: Balatro is the strongest premium pick, while AFK Journey is the standout free-to-play RPG. This ranking covers games that launched on mobile or made a meaningful mobile debut in 2024—not older games that were simply still popular that year. It weighs gameplay, how well each game suits phones, replay value, monetization and recognition, rather than downloads or store ratings alone.
How this 2024 ranking works
There is no single authoritative ranking of the best Android and iOS games of 2024. Awards offer useful evidence, not a universal verdict: Google Play named AFK Journey its Best Game of 2024 and recognized Squad Busters for multiplayer; Apple named AFK Journey iPhone Game of the Year and Balatro+ Apple Arcade Game of the Year. Google Play’s 2024 awards and Apple’s App Store Awards support those distinctions. The list includes both premium games and free-to-play releases. 1. Balatro — best overall
Verdict: The best all-round choice if you want a paid game with fast runs and deep replayability. Its poker-inspired rules are only the starting point: jokers, card modifiers and scoring combinations turn each run into a puzzle about building a powerful deck. It works naturally with touch controls and does not rely on a live-service loop in its premium form.
Trade-off: This is not conventional poker; the strategy is in manipulating scoring and synergies. Its gambling-themed presentation may not suit every family. On Apple devices, distinguish the separately purchased game from Balatro+, the Apple Arcade edition. Choose it if you want a replayable solo game without gacha mechanics. If you would rather have a structured action campaign than repeatable card runs, look at Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.
2. AFK Journey — best free-to-play RPG
Verdict: The strongest pick for a fantasy story, exploration and tactical team building without requiring constant manual action. Its illustrated world and auto-battle elements make it more approachable than an action RPG, while positioning, character choices and progression give players decisions to make.

Players who dislike auto-battles, collection systems or daily routines may prefer Balatro.
3. Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket — best for quick card sessions
Verdict: A polished, accessible way to collect digital Pokémon cards and play shorter matches. The cards’ visual presentation is part of the draw, so it suits collectors as much as players who want a quick battle. It was among The Game Awards’ Best Mobile Game nominees.

Trade-off: Pocket is not a substitute for the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game or its full competitive ruleset. Free daily pack access sits alongside paid pack-related options, making collection a central part of its free-to-play model. Choose it for accessible collecting and presentation rather than the deepest competitive card play; Balatro is the better fit if you want a strategy-first solo card game.

4. Wuthering Waves — best open-world action RPG
Verdict: Pick it for exploration and real-time combat where the player has more direct control than in an auto-battler. Its large world, cinematic presentation and character collection made it one of 2024’s most prominent mobile RPG launches; it also reached The Game Awards’ Best Mobile Game field.
Trade-off: This is a demanding 3D game, not a safe choice for every older phone. Expect substantial storage, battery and processing demands, with performance varying by device; launch-period technical issues were also part of its 2024 reception. Character and weapon acquisition use free-to-play systems that can cost completionists. If you want fantasy exploration with less emphasis on manual combat, try AFK Journey.
5. Zenless Zone Zero — best stylish action RPG
Verdict: A strong option for fast, readable fights, striking animation and a distinctive urban setting. Its activities are divided into encounters, so it is a better fit than a sprawling open world when you want action in shorter chunks. It was a Best Mobile Game nominee at The Game Awards.
Trade-off: The free-to-play character-collection economy is part of the package. Early play can feel guided or repetitive if you expect the freedom of a traditional console action game, and the 3D presentation can tax storage, battery and device performance. Choose it over Wuthering Waves for stylish battles rather than a continuously explorable world.

6. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown — best premium action-platformer
Verdict: The list’s best choice for a structured adventure built around exploration, precise movement, combat and ability-based progression instead of an endless service loop. Its metroidvania-style design makes it a notable premium mobile adaptation, and it was included in The Game Awards’ mobile-related nominee coverage.
Trade-off: It is paid, and availability and price vary by region. Check the store listing for device compatibility and controller support rather than assuming either is universal. Its deliberate campaign is a poor fit if you mainly want PvP, free daily content or very short sessions. A larger screen or controller may suit its platforming better than a small phone touchscreen.

Verdict: The easiest recommendation here for quick, lively multiplayer. It brings recognizable Supercell characters into short, chaotic matches, making it accessible to players who do not want to commit to a long RPG session. 8. Infinity Nikki — best cozy exploration game
Verdict: A welcome alternative to the year’s combat-heavy mobile RPGs, mixing dress-up and collection with light adventure and colorful open-world exploration. It gives players who enjoy styling and discovery a reason to look beyond shooters and character-action games.
Trade-off: It launched late in 2024, so it had less time than earlier releases to establish long-term content depth and support. Its free-to-play model includes cosmetic collection systems; whether that is appealing or frustrating depends on how much you enjoy collecting outfits. The large 3D world can also be demanding on storage and performance. It is the pick here for dress-up and exploration, not for a conventional cozy puzzle game.
9. Solo Leveling: ARISE — best anime character-action pick
Verdict: A good fit for flashy real-time combat, team building and rapid character progression, especially if you already care about the Solo Leveling story. Its progression structure lends itself to shorter mobile sessions.

The free-to-play game also asks players to engage with repeated progression and acquisition systems, so the strength of the brand should not be confused with the strength of every resource loop. Choose it for anime combat; Zenless Zone Zero is the alternative for a different setting and visual style.
10. Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile — best for large-scale shooting
Verdict: The year’s choice for players looking for a demanding competitive shooter with the Warzone identity and large-scale format on a phone. Its technical ambition earns it a place, but not a higher rank than more accessible or consistently suitable mobile experiences.
Trade-off: Network quality, storage, device performance and control preference all matter. Touch controls may not suit players accustomed to console or PC shooters; check controller support for your specific device and version. Its 2024 launch state should not be treated as a permanent description because live-service updates can change the experience. The free-to-play model also brings ongoing progression and updates.
Which game should you choose?
- For a paid game without gacha: Start with Balatro; choose Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown for a full action-platforming campaign.
- For a free story-driven RPG: Choose AFK Journey if you like tactical and auto-battling systems; choose Wuthering Waves for manual combat and open-world exploration.
- For cards: Pick Pokémon TCG Pocket for Pokémon collecting and short matches, or Balatro for a premium solo strategy loop.
- For quick play with others: Try Squad Busters. For a more demanding shooter, consider Warzone Mobile only after checking your device and control preferences.
