For a normal screenshot of your computer, start with the capture tools already built into Windows or macOS. Use an extension only when you need a browser-specific workflow, and check its permissions and privacy disclosures first. If you need an automated screenshot of a web page rather than your desktop, a screenshot API is a different kind of tool.

Choose a tool by what you need to capture

“Screenshot” and “screen capture” usually mean copying visible screen content, but the right tool depends on the target and the result you want. A desktop capture records what is currently displayed; it is not necessarily a full-page capture of a long website. A browser extension may add browser-specific capture modes, while a screenshot API can capture a web page from code.

Need Start with What to consider
Capture all or part of a Windows screen Snipping Tool Choose a region, window, or full-screen snip; annotate and save afterward.
Capture a Mac screen Screenshot controls Choose a screen, window, or selected area; some apps may prevent window capture.
Capture browser content using an added workflow A browser extension Check what it captures, its current permissions, privacy disclosures, and update history.
Capture web pages automatically from an application or script A screenshot API Useful for repeatable, server-side captures; it does not take a screenshot of your computer desktop.

For most one-off computer screenshots, built-in tools are enough. No special physical product is required.

Take a screenshot in Windows with Snipping Tool

Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to “Take a snapshot to copy words or images from all or part of your PC screen.” On Windows 10 and Windows 11, press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the image-snipping overlay.

  1. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
  2. Choose the capture shape or scope offered by the overlay: freeform, rectangular, window, or full screen.
  3. Make the capture. It opens in Snipping Tool, where you can annotate, save, or share it.

For a static image of the entire screen copied to the clipboard, Microsoft also documents the Print Screen (PrtSc) key. The precise key behavior can depend on the device and its settings; if it does not open the capture you expect, use the Snipping Tool shortcut instead.

Microsoft notes that when a browser snip is saved as HTML, Snipping Tool can display the URL below it, and documents an option to turn that display off. This is distinct from saving an ordinary image screenshot.

Developer note: launching Snipping Tool

Windows apps can use a documented URI scheme to launch the Snipping Tool capture overlay for image or video capture. This is an app-integration route, not a normal user shortcut. Microsoft’s developer documentation includes security considerations for packaged app callers; review those before adding the launch behavior to an application: Microsoft Learn: Launch Snipping Tool.

Take a screenshot on a Mac

macOS includes Screenshot controls that can be opened with keyboard controls or the Screenshot app. Apple’s guide explains how to capture the screen and how to copy a capture to the clipboard using the screenshot thumbnail’s contextual menu.

Apple says that supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later can choose the capture format. That option is not established for every Mac model or earlier macOS release. Apple also cautions that some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow screenshots of their windows. See Apple’s Mac screenshot guide for the controls and current platform details.

When a browser extension makes sense

An extension can be useful when you want a browser-oriented capture workflow, such as capturing a viewport, cropping, or using a configurable shortcut. One Chrome Web Store listing, for example, advertises viewport capture, crop-and-save modes, configurable shortcuts, PNG or JPG output, clipboard copying, and handling for high-density displays. Those are claims made by that listing, not independently verified results: Chrome Web Store listing.

Before installing any capture extension, review the listing and the extension’s current disclosures. In particular, check:

  • Permissions: what data and browser content it can access, and whether the requested access fits the feature you want.
  • Capture scope: whether it captures the visible viewport, a selected region, a tab, or some other scope. Do not assume every extension supports full-page capture.
  • Data handling: whether capture happens locally or content is sent elsewhere, according to the current privacy disclosures.
  • Maintenance: the update history and whether the extension is still maintained.

A store listing or vendor privacy statement is not, by itself, a guarantee that a tool is safe for sensitive material. Avoid capturing confidential pages with an extension unless its access and data handling meet your needs.

What browser capture APIs establish

Chrome’s developer reference for the desktopCapture API describes capturing screen content, an individual window, or an individual tab. That page documents the Manifest V2 API; it does not show that every current extension uses that API or that it is the only way to capture browser content. See Chrome’s desktopCapture reference.

What to use for an automated screenshot of a web page

If you want an image or PDF of a URL as part of a script, application, or AI-agent workflow, use a web-page screenshot service rather than a desktop screenshot shortcut. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. It accepts a URL and can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is for web-page capture, not for photographing an arbitrary app window or your whole desktop.

For a developer who wants one request to capture a web page, ScreenshotNeo is the service to try first: cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture, and only clean shots are billed.

One-call cURL example

Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your ScreenshotNeo access key and change the target URL if needed. The request saves the response to shot.webp.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters and response details. The service supports the parameter names used by other screenshot APIs as well, which can make switching easier.

Python equivalent

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js equivalent

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The supplied Node.js example makes the request and exposes the response; it does not save the body to a file. Add file-writing code if your application needs a local image. For production code, inspect the HTTP response and handle failures rather than assuming every response is a usable image.

Capture options for web-page workflows

ScreenshotNeo has options for tailoring a page capture. Use only the controls your task requires:

  • Scope and rendering: full-page capture with lazy images loaded, capture a single element by CSS selector, choose from 12 device presets or a custom viewport, set retina scale, or capture HTML/CSS to an image.
  • Appearance and output: choose dark mode, a transparent background, image resizing, or PDF settings such as paper size, margins, landscape orientation, and page ranges.
  • Timing and interaction: wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle; click an element before capture; apply custom CSS or JavaScript; and hide elements by selector.
  • Request context: set custom headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, or geolocation. These settings can change what the page renders, so match them to the intended visitor context.
  • Resource handling: block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types. Blocking resources can make a capture faster or cleaner, but it can also break page rendering if a required resource is blocked.
  • Automation and delivery: choose caching with a TTL, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API. An OpenAPI specification is also available.

Consent handling is optional: the service can accept cookie or consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, as well as newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. This is useful when the desired output is page content rather than overlays, but leave those steps disabled if you need to document the page exactly as it appeared with a banner or widget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Billing, response signals, and plan prices

ScreenshotNeo states that bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Responses identify the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Use those response signals when checking whether a request produced a billable capture, rather than counting every request as a paid shot.

Plan Monthly allowance Price
Free 1,000 shots $0; no card required
Starter 3,000 shots $5
Growth 15,000 shots $15
Pro 60,000 shots $39
Scale 250,000 shots $99
Business 1,000,000 shots $249

These are the stated monthly plan prices and allowances. Yearly billing gives two months free. Every feature is on every plan. Choose a tier based on expected successful, billable volume rather than raw attempts, and account for the fact that unusually slow or complex pages still need time to render. No comparative speed or reliability benchmark is established here.

ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Its tools are named take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. When screenshots are blocked

If a screenshot shortcut or capture extension is blocked on a managed work or school computer, your organization may have enabled a Chrome Enterprise screenshot-prevention policy. Chrome Enterprise documentation says the policy applies on supported Windows and Mac environments to screenshots taken by keyboard shortcut and by apps or extensions using Chrome’s capture API.

On a managed device, ask your administrator whether capture is intentionally restricted and whether an approved workflow is available. Do not try to bypass an organization’s policy. See Chrome Enterprise and Education Help.

Troubleshoot common screenshot problems

  • The Windows shortcut does nothing: use the Snipping Tool directly from Windows, or try Windows logo key + Shift + S again. On a managed device, check with your administrator in case capture is restricted.
  • You have a screenshot but cannot find a file: the capture may have been copied to the clipboard rather than saved. Open the relevant screenshot tool and save it, or paste the clipboard contents into an app that can accept an image.
  • A Mac app window will not capture: some apps may restrict window screenshots. Apple specifically identifies Apple TV as an example; the restriction is not necessarily a fault in the Screenshot controls.
  • An extension does not offer the scope you need: verify whether its listing describes viewport, tab, window, region, or full-page capture. Do not infer full-page support from the word “screenshot.”
  • A web-page API capture is blank or incomplete: the page may need more rendering time, a selector-based wait, network idle, or an interaction before capture. Review the response verdict and billing headers; blank pages, bot checks, timeouts, and failed loads are identified as non-billable by ScreenshotNeo.
  • An API capture loses content after blocking resources: stop blocking requests or resource types that the page needs, and retry with the minimum blocking configuration.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a screenshot API to capture my desktop?

No. ScreenshotNeo captures web pages from URLs; use your operating system’s screenshot controls for the desktop, apps, and arbitrary windows.

Does macOS Tahoe 26 add screenshot format choices to every Mac?

No. Apple limits that feature to supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a Chrome extension listing prove that the extension is private?

No. Review current permissions and privacy disclosures and determine whether capture is local or sent elsewhere; a listing alone does not establish how every use is handled.
