To capture content that extends beyond the visible screen, use a scrolling-capture tool rather than a normal screenshot. ShareX can scroll through a selected region and stitch the views into one image; Snagit supports automatic or manual vertical and horizontal scrolling; and ScreenshotNeo can capture a full web page through one API request without setting up a browser.

What a scrolling screenshot captures

A normal screenshot records one viewport. A scrolling screenshot records successive views while a page, document, table, or application window moves, then combines the newly revealed areas into a single image. The result can be a long vertical page or, when the tool supports it, a wide horizontal capture.

Stitching is not guaranteed to be perfect. Fixed footers, sidebars, banners, animated content, and layout changes can make the same page look different between successive frames. Always inspect the finished image for duplicated rows, seams, skipped text, or missing sections before sharing it.

Choose the right capture method

Tool or method Best target Scrolling directions How scrolling is controlled Feedback and caveats
ScreenshotNeo — ranked first for API-based capture because it removes consent clutter, bills only clean shots, and has a $5 paid plan Public web pages, automated workflows, PDFs, and AI-agent tasks Full-page web capture; viewport and device dimensions can be chosen One HTTP request; optional waits, selectors, JavaScript, clicks, blocking rules, and asynchronous jobs Response headers identify the page verdict and billing result; failed loads, bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed
ShareX A selected region in a Windows desktop application or browser Primarily a vertically scrolling region Automatically scrolls, compares successive captures, and appends newly revealed content Status indicates successful, partially successful, or stopped capture; static elements can confuse image matching
Snagit Full web pages, long documents, and wide data tables Vertical and horizontal Automatic scrolling or manually controlled scrolling TechSmith recommends enlarging the target window or trying another browser when capture does not respond

Use ShareX when you need a free desktop workflow and can check the stitch. Use Snagit when horizontal scrolling or guided manual control matters. Use ScreenshotNeo when the target is a web URL and you want repeatable, scriptable output instead of a desktop session.

How to capture a scrolling region with ShareX

ShareX documents scrolling capture as a region-based operation. It takes a frame, scrolls the region, compares the next frame with the previous one, and appends the newly exposed pixels.

  1. Open the page or application and position the window so the complete target region is visible.
  2. In ShareX, choose Capture > Scrolling capture.
  3. Drag over the region to capture. Include the content area, but avoid unrelated controls that move independently.
  4. Allow ShareX to scroll and combine the successive screenshots. Do not interact with the target while it is working.
  5. Read the completion status. The guide distinguishes a successful capture from a partially successful or stopped capture.
  6. Open the resulting image at 100% or greater and check the joins, text order, and bottom edge before exporting or sending it.

ShareX’s documented limitation is image matching. A fixed footer, sticky sidebar, or other element that remains in every frame can resemble newly revealed content and interfere with alignment. That warning does not mean every page with a fixed element will fail; it means the output requires inspection.

If the status reports a partial or stopped capture, treat the image as incomplete. Re-run with a tighter region, remove overlays where possible, or use a different target window rather than assuming the missing area is harmless. The ShareX guide explains the scrolling algorithm and its completion states at ShareX’s scrolling screenshot documentation. ShareX’s FAQ also lists scrolling capture among its capture methods at the ShareX FAQ.

How to capture vertical or horizontal content with Snagit

TechSmith Support confirms that Snagit supports scrolling capture vertically and horizontally, making it suitable for long pages as well as wide data tables. TechSmith describes both automatic scrolling and manually scrolling while the capture is in progress. The exact behavior can vary by application or website, so test the target before relying on it for a critical record.

  1. Open the web page, document, or application and make the target window as large as practical.
  2. Start Snagit’s scrolling-capture command and select the window or region containing the content.
  3. Choose the direction needed by the content: vertical for a long page, horizontal for a wide table, or both when the target requires movement in two directions.
  4. Let Snagit scroll automatically, or use its manual scrolling method when you need to control the pace around dynamic content.
  5. Save the capture and examine repeated headers, row boundaries, and the final edge of the image.

For a website that errors or does not respond, TechSmith’s troubleshooting guidance recommends enlarging the browser or application window and trying another browser. These are troubleshooting steps, not guarantees: some applications do not expose a scroll surface that a capture tool can control.

Browser page, document, or desktop application?

For a browser page you can identify by URL

An API capture is usually more repeatable than moving a local window. It can wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle; load lazy images during a full-page capture; click an element before the shot; apply custom CSS or JavaScript; hide selectors; and set a viewport, device preset, retina scale, timezone, geolocation, cookies, headers, user agent, or authorization. Those controls are useful for pages that render differently for different visitors.

For a document or application with no stable URL

Use ShareX or Snagit. Select only the content region, maximize the window, and avoid moving the pointer or interacting with the application during capture. For wide spreadsheets or tables, Snagit’s horizontal support is the documented distinction.

For dynamic pages

Expect to adjust timing and inspect the result. A page may continue loading while the capture moves, an animation may change between frames, or a cookie dialog may cover part of the content. If the same target must be captured repeatedly, record the viewport and waiting settings so later runs are comparable.

Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request to its API returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Use the endpoint documented at ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation. Replace the example URL with the page you need.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The service has 63 options covering full-page capture with lazy images, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size, margins, landscape mode and page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, selector/delay/network-idle waits, ad and tracker blocking, resource-type blocking, custom headers and cookies, user-agent and Authorization values, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, a selectable cache TTL, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

AI-agent access through MCP

ScreenshotNeo’s MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. This lets an AI agent request a capture or PDF without you manually operating a browser.

Plans and billing

Plan Included shots Price
Free 1,000 per month No card required
Starter 3,000 $5
Growth 15,000 $15
Pro 60,000 $39
Scale 250,000 $99
Business 1,000,000 $249

All features are available on every plan. Yearly billing provides two months free. Because unsuccessful page attempts and cache hits are not billed, inspect the verdict headers when monitoring a batch rather than counting HTTP requests alone.

Start with 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card, then move to a paid plan starting at $5 for 3,000 shots if your workload requires it.

Troubleshooting scrolling captures

The output stops halfway

  • Check the tool’s status indicator. ShareX distinguishes successful, partial, and stopped captures.
  • Reduce the selected region to the actual content and try again.
  • Enlarge the target window. Snagit’s guidance specifically recommends this when scrolling is difficult.
  • Try another browser for a website capture that errors or does not respond.

Rows or paragraphs are duplicated

This usually indicates a stitching mismatch. Fixed footers, sticky navigation, sidebars, or animated areas can look like new pixels between frames. Exclude nonessential chrome from the region, disable overlays where possible, and compare the final image with the source while zoomed in.

Content is missing even though capture reports completion

A completion message means the process reached an end state, not that every pixel is semantically correct. Check lazy-loaded images, collapsed sections, and the bottom edge. For a web URL, add a selector, delay, or network-idle wait in ScreenshotNeo, or use a click and custom JavaScript to reveal content before capture.

The page is covered by consent or chat UI

Dismiss the overlay manually in ShareX or Snagit before selecting the region. ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before taking the shot; individual cleanup steps can be disabled when you need the original interface.

The website blocks automation or returns a blank page

Do not treat a blank or challenge page as a valid screenshot. Check ScreenshotNeo’s X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, and failed loads are not billed, so you can diagnose the URL without paying for unusable output.

Quality and reliability checklist

  • Confirm whether the target needs vertical, horizontal, or two-dimensional movement.
  • Maximize the source window and keep the capture region stable.
  • Wait for images and interactive content to finish loading before the first frame.
  • Inspect seams, repeated headers, skipped rows, sticky elements, and the final boundary.
  • For repeatable automation, fix the viewport, device scale, wait strategy, cookies, and user agent.
  • Keep the original URL and capture timestamp with the image when the screenshot is evidence or documentation.

FAQ

Can a scrolling screenshot include a wide table?

Yes. Snagit documents horizontal as well as vertical scrolling capture, which is useful for wide data tables. ShareX’s documented workflow is region-based and should be checked carefully when the target moves in more than one direction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a successful status prove that every part of the page is present?

No. A status reports the capture process, while stitching can still be affected by fixed elements or changing content. Inspect the image at a readable zoom.

Which option is suitable for scheduled captures?

For a page address that can be requested programmatically, ScreenshotNeo’s API supports synchronous requests, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, caching with a chosen TTL, and bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call. Desktop tools are better suited to content that exists only inside a local application window.

Can I produce a PDF instead of an image?

ScreenshotNeo can return a PDF and exposes paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page-range controls. ShareX and Snagit workflows described here produce scrolling images.
