GParted is still a free, bootable partition editor that can resize and move supported partitions while Windows is offline. It is most useful when unallocated space is not next to the volume you need to expand. For a straightforward shrink or extension into adjacent space, start with Windows Disk Management or DiskPart. Before using any partition editor on a server, verify a restorable backup and arrange a maintenance window and recovery access.
What GParted does—and what it does not
GParted is not a Windows Server application. GParted Live boots separately from Windows and provides an environment for working with disk partitions. Its documented operations include creating, deleting, resizing, moving, copying, checking, and labeling partitions. It supports NTFS, but support depends on the filesystem and operation; it is not a universal solution for every storage layer.
These terms describe different changes:
- Filesystem resize: Changes the area the filesystem can use. A volume may need both its filesystem and its containing partition resized.
- Partition resize: Changes a partition’s boundaries on disk. Shrinking usually creates unallocated space; growing consumes suitable unallocated space.
- Move: Relocates a partition on the disk. This can make unallocated space adjacent to another partition, but may require extensive data movement and time.
- Extend a volume: Makes a volume larger by adding available space. On a basic Windows volume, the unallocated space must be immediately after the volume and on the same disk.
- Create a partition: Turns unallocated disk space into a new partition. It does not add capacity to another volume.
- Change a partition table: Alters the disk’s layout metadata, such as using MBR or GPT. This is different from resizing a single partition and can affect booting.
- Clone or image a disk: Copies data for migration or recovery. Partition editing alone is not a backup or a clone.
GParted is designed to preserve data during supported operations, but no partition editor can guarantee that after an interrupted move, power loss, hardware or controller failure, or an unsupported layout. GParted itself recommends backing up the whole disk or partition before resizing or moving it (GParted Live guidance).

Microsoft’s basic-volume guidance makes the key constraint clear: to extend a volume, the unallocated space must be contiguous, immediately after it, and on the same disk. Windows can shrink an NTFS volume from its end and extend a volume into suitable adjacent unallocated space. If that is all you need, the built-in tools avoid booting a separate partition editor.

Disk Management
Open Disk Management (run diskmgmt.msc), identify the correct disk and volume, then right-click an NTFS volume and choose Shrink Volume or Extend Volume. The Extend option is unavailable when the required contiguous space is not there. See Microsoft’s Windows Server shrink and extend instructions.
DiskPart
Run an elevated command prompt and inspect the layout before making changes. Disk numbers, partition numbers, and volume numbers are not interchangeable; confirm each selection carefully.

exitextend does not move an intervening partition. Microsoft documents DiskPart for Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025, among other supported systems; consult the DiskPart reference for syntax and applicable systems.
When GParted can help
Consider GParted Live when Windows cannot shrink a volume enough, or when a partition lies between the unallocated space and the volume you want to grow. For example:

An offline editor may be able to move the intervening partition, making the free space adjacent to C:, and then grow C:. That is also a higher-risk, potentially lengthy operation: moving a partition can involve relocating data, not merely changing a boundary.

Its feature list includes operations and devices such as HDDs, SSDs, NVMe devices, and RAID presentations, but that does not certify every controller, SAN, Storage Spaces arrangement, cluster, or virtual disk configuration. Before changing a production server
Do not start by booting partition media. First determine what storage layer needs to change and what recovery will look like if the server does not boot.
- Map the layout. In Disk Management, record disk numbers, partition order, sizes, filesystems, drive letters, and free space. Determine whether the disk is basic or dynamic and MBR or GPT.
- Identify the storage stack. Check whether the disk is encrypted, backed by hardware RAID, a virtual disk, Storage Spaces, SAN storage, or another managed layer. If the capacity itself must increase, you may need to expand the underlying virtual disk or storage allocation first.
- Secure recovery. Have a recent application-consistent backup and, where appropriate, system-state or bare-metal recovery. Verify that recovery works; a “successful backup” status alone is not a restore test. Keep BitLocker recovery keys and document the rollback plan.
- Arrange access and time. Schedule downtime, stop workloads that write to the affected volume, and make sure console or out-of-band access is available. Do not attempt a boot-media operation on a remote server with no recovery console.
- Prepare Windows and the filesystem. Confirm the volume is healthy and shut Windows down fully—do not leave it hibernated or in a hybrid shutdown state. If a repair is needed, schedule a suitable check. For example,
chkdsk C: /fchecks and repairs filesystem errors;/ralso scans for bad sectors and can take a long time on large volumes. Avoid running it as a ritual without a reason. - Check encryption. Use
manage-bde -statusto inspect BitLocker state and retain the recovery key. GParted’s current feature table lists BitLocker as detectable, movable, and copyable, but not readable, growable, shrinkable, or checkable. Do not treat it as a BitLocker resizing tool; prefer a Windows-supported or storage-vendor-supported process.
GParted’s Live documentation recommends a whole-disk or partition-image backup. That backup, not the partition editor, is your recovery mechanism.
Boot GParted Live and make the change
GParted Live is free software distributed under the GNU General Public License. It is boot media, not an installed Windows utility. The official download page listed gparted-live-1.8.1-3-amd64.iso as the stable image when checked on August 18, 2026; release numbers can change, so use the official download page for the current image. GParted Live can be started from USB, CD, PXE, or a hard disk. The project says its amd64 image supports UEFI Secure Boot from version 1.7.0-1 onward; follow the current boot guidance for the server’s firmware configuration.
- Download the image from GParted’s official site. Verify its checksum or signature if required by your organization’s policy.
- Write it to USB using an approved imaging tool, or use another supported boot method. Boot the server from that media using its physical or remote console.
- Confirm the correct disk is visible. Match it to your recorded layout by size and partition structure before selecting anything. If the disk is missing, stop; investigate the controller, storage driver, RAID presentation, or virtualization layer rather than guessing.
- Select the intended partition and choose Resize/Move. Set the required boundary, then move any intervening partition only if necessary. Make sure the resulting unallocated space is directly beside the destination partition before growing it.
- Review the pending-operations list and the disk layout again. Apply only after confirming the correct disk, partitions, and order of operations.
- Do not power off, reset, or remove boot media while operations are in progress. Save the operation details or a screenshot for the change record.
- When the work completes, reboot into Windows and validate before returning the server to service.
There is no dependable universal time estimate for moving a partition. Duration depends on the amount of data relocated, storage performance, interface speed, and the number of operations. A slow-looking progress indicator is not by itself a reason to interrupt the process.

Special cases that change the answer
BitLocker
BitLocker is a significant limitation, not a minor caveat. Although GParted can detect a BitLocker volume and its table lists moving and copying, it does not list growing or shrinking the encrypted volume. Keep the recovery key and use Windows-native or explicitly supported vendor procedures. Do not infer resizing support from the fact that a tool can detect the volume.
UEFI, GPT, and boot partitions
Moving or changing EFI System, recovery, or other boot-related partitions can affect startup. Distinguish ordinary partition resizing from changing the partition table or firmware boot mode. Do not convert MBR to GPT or change BIOS/UEFI mode as an incidental part of a resize; make those migrations only with a specific boot and recovery plan.
Hardware RAID, SAN, clusters, and Storage Spaces
The original 2009 article described successful use on particular Windows Server 2003 RAID 1 and RAID 5 systems. That is historical anecdotal experience, not a compatibility guarantee for a modern controller, SAN, cluster, Storage Spaces pool, or vendor-specific virtual disk. Confirm the controller model and firmware, the logical disk presented to the operating system, vendor support, and array health. Never repartition an array that is degraded or rebuilding. For managed or clustered storage, use the documented storage-layer procedure and support path.
Virtual machines
If the guest needs more total capacity, first expand its virtual disk in the hypervisor or cloud platform, then rescan the disk in Windows and extend the partition or volume. GParted cannot create capacity beyond what the virtual disk presents. Use it only if a supported guest partition-layout change is actually required.

Critical workloads and dynamic disks
For a database, domain controller, clustered workload, or other critical system, do not use a boot editor without a tested rollback and a workload-aware backup. Confirm whether the disk is dynamic or otherwise managed before proceeding; a basic-volume procedure should not be assumed to apply to a different volume type.
Common problems and safe responses
Windows will not shrink the volume far enough
Windows may be constrained by immovable files, pagefile placement, shadow copies, filesystem errors, or insufficient free space. First cancel the resize, boot Windows, check filesystem health, review pagefile and shadow-copy placement, and remove or relocate unnecessary data. GParted’s NTFS guidance also recommends checking the filesystem, defragmenting where appropriate, moving large files, and ensuring Windows has shut down properly (GParted help manual). Recalculate the required shrink size rather than forcing an oversized change.
GParted cannot see the disk
Do not proceed on a guessed device. The cause may be a controller mode or driver, SAN or multipath configuration, unsupported storage layer, virtual-disk presentation, or hardware issue. Reboot into the normal environment and use the hypervisor, controller, or storage vendor’s tools to inspect it.
The change completed but Windows shows the old size
Confirm that both the partition boundary and filesystem were resized, that the correct disk and partition were edited, and whether Windows needs a rescan or reboot. Recheck whether encryption, dynamic disks, or another storage layer controls the volume.
Windows does not boot or the volume is missing
Stop experimenting and use the organization’s tested image-based or bare-metal recovery procedure. Boot failures can follow an interrupted move, filesystem damage, changed partition identifiers, incorrect system-partition state, or a GPT/UEFI and MBR/BIOS mismatch. Avoid improvised boot-record commands without knowing the exact configuration and recovery environment.
Validate before closing the maintenance window
After reboot, open diskmgmt.msc and check the partition order, drive letters, labels, and expected capacity. Confirm that the server boots normally, services start, and applications can read and write. Review Event Viewer for new disk, NTFS, or boot errors; confirm backup software recognizes the volume and BitLocker is in the expected state. If appropriate, run a non-repairing online scan such as chkdsk <drive-letter>: /scan. Schedule a repair scan if it reports errors or the recovery plan calls for one.
Which tool should you choose?

GParted remains a capable free tool for supported offline partition work, not a universal Windows Server maintenance shortcut. The 2009 article that popularized the topic concerned Windows Server 2003 and should not be read as current assurance for modern RAID, BitLocker, virtualization, or storage configurations (historical article). Use Windows tools for simple adjacent-space changes; use GParted only when its ability to move partitions solves a real layout problem and you are prepared to restore the server if the operation fails.
