Unauthorized users accessed public-facing information and announcement systems at three Canadian airports on the evening of October 14, 2025. The incidents affected Kelowna and Victoria in British Columbia and Windsor in Ontario; the clearest report of flight delays came from Kelowna. Available reporting found no indication that air-traffic control, aircraft systems, passenger screening or other core aviation operations were compromised.
What happened on October 14?
On Tuesday evening, October 14, unauthorized political messages appeared on airport systems used to inform passengers. Reports published the following day described the material as pro-Hamas and anti-Israel, alongside anti-Donald Trump or anti-U.S. content. The messages were not statements from the airports or the Canadian government, and their content does not identify who was responsible.
The reports concern public communications systems, not a shutdown of Canada’s airport network. Transport Canada confirmed incidents at three airports, but details differed by location. CityNews, citing Canadian Press reporting, and CityNews Vancouver identified Kelowna, Victoria and Windsor.

At Kelowna, the airport said an unauthorized third party gained access to its display and PA systems. According to PAX News reporting on comments by the airport’s operations director, the PA system was restored in roughly 20 seconds, while removing the images from screens took several minutes. The airport isolated and checked the systems before restoring them later that night.

Victoria’s affected PA platform was described in reporting as cloud-based and supplied externally. That raises a broader question about third-party systems, but the available reporting does not establish that the provider was breached, that one provider served all three airports, or that a particular vendor security failure caused the incidents.
Were flights delayed?
Some delays were reported at Kelowna after the incident. That is narrower than saying the hack delayed flights at all three airports. A departure board showing a delayed flight the next morning is not, on its own, proof that the cyber incident caused that delay: weather, airline schedules, aircraft or crew availability, and other operational factors can also affect departures.

Airport information screens and announcements matter to passengers and can complicate routine operations when unavailable. Airports may need to verify information or use alternate communication methods while systems are isolated. But a disruption to passenger-facing communications does not automatically mean aircraft cannot move or that flight operations have been compromised.
Was aviation safety affected?
Available reporting said there was no indication of an impact on aviation safety or core airport operations. Transport Canada said it was working with federal security partners and law enforcement to investigate whether there were wider effects. This is a report of no known impact, not a claim that every possible consequence had been definitively ruled out.

The compromised systems reported at Kelowna and Victoria were used for displays and announcements. Reporting did not say that air-traffic control, aircraft navigation, runway systems, passenger screening, customs and immigration processing, or airline reservation and check-in systems were accessed. Those functions should not be conflated with a terminal display or PA system.
What is known about the attackers?
Public accounts described unauthorized access, and the displayed or broadcast material had an evident political character. But the available reports did not identify the person or group responsible, explain the initial access method, say whether credentials were stolen or a vulnerability exploited, or confirm that the incidents were centrally coordinated. The message’s apparent politics are not proof of the attacker’s identity, sponsorship or motive.

Why a screen-and-speaker intrusion still matters
Passenger information systems are not flight-control systems, but they are part of how an airport communicates gate changes, boarding information and other instructions. A hijacked screen or loudspeaker can create confusion and undermine confidence in official announcements even if safety-critical systems remain unaffected.
When airports rely on networked or externally managed communications platforms, resilience depends on more than preventing unauthorized access. Useful safeguards include separating public-facing systems from operational networks, tightly controlling vendor and administrator access, using strong authentication, keeping audit logs, and maintaining a tested local override or fallback. The reporting on this incident does not say which of those controls failed or what the investigation ultimately found.

What travelers should do if airport displays or announcements fail
- Check your airline’s app or website for current flight and gate information.
- Follow instructions from airport staff and official airport channels rather than treating an unexpected screen message as authoritative.
- Allow extra time if staff are communicating manually or verifying information.
- Use airline or airport alerts for updates; do not infer that a displayed delay is caused by a cyber incident unless officials say so.
For this October 2025 incident, the most accurate summary is limited: public information and announcement systems were accessed at three airports, and some Kelowna flights were delayed. No available report indicated a compromise of flight-safety systems, and investigators had not publicly attributed the intrusion.
