It contains a real electrical-discharge pattern, but not a live bolt or trapped storm lightning. The object made by Electron Impressions is a transparent acrylic cylinder with a permanent internal Lichtenberg figure: branching channels formed when stored electrical charge discharged through the insulating material. A particle accelerator supplied the energetic electrons; rotating the cylinder during exposure helped distribute them around its curved surface.
What is actually inside the “bottle”?
Despite the viral shorthand, the object is described as a solid acrylic cylinder, not an ordinary glass bottle filled with glowing plasma. Its interior contains a branching network of microscopic channels and fractures created by an electrical discharge. That pattern is a three-dimensional Lichtenberg figure—the scientific name for lightning-like branching marks formed in or on an insulating material.
The channels remain in the acrylic after the discharge. They are not free-floating bolts, and the finished sculpture is not a container of continuously moving electricity. “Real lightning” is accurate only in the limited sense that a genuine electrical breakdown produced the pattern; natural lightning was not captured.

The basic art and engineering process predates this viral cylinder, so the notable challenge here is the cylindrical geometry—not the invention of Lichtenberg figures.

How accelerator-made Lichtenberg figures work
Acrylic is an electrical insulator. High-energy electrons can be driven into it, where charge accumulates inside the material rather than flowing away as it would through a conductor. When that stored charge breaks down and discharges, it travels through branching paths, leaving the characteristic internal figure.
- Irradiate the insulator. An accelerator directs energetic electrons into the acrylic, depositing charge within it.
- Allow charge to build up. The material holds that charge temporarily as a space charge.
- Release it through a discharge. The electrical breakdown propagates through the material, forming branching channels.
- Inspect the result. The permanent pattern is viewed through the transparent acrylic.
The accelerator does not simply shoot a visible lightning bolt into the object. It supplies the energetic electrons; the conspicuous branching discharge happens as stored charge breaks down. For background on accelerator-made figures, see this technical PDF from Captured Lightning.
Why rotate a cylinder?
With a flat block, a beam can be directed at a broad face. A cylinder presents a harder distribution problem: if held still in a fixed beam, the side facing the accelerator would receive more exposure than the far side. That could produce an uneven charge distribution and a lopsided figure.

The rotation allowed the beam to reach around its circumference, aiming for a more even distribution. That practical adaptation is the key engineering idea behind the object: the maker had to handle the workpiece mechanically while it was in the accelerator environment, not just put a familiar acrylic block in a new shape.

The reported rotating rig
Coverage of the build describes a deliberately simple assembly: a brushed DC motor powered by a 12-volt lead-acid battery, with a sheet of lead around the battery as additional shielding. A 3D-printed black PETG structure supported the setup, and staggered printed wheels acted as rollers for the cylinder.
The account reports a rotation speed of about 150 revolutions per minute and an exposure of roughly one to two seconds. Those are reported settings for this project, not a general recipe or a universal operating target. The coverage does not establish the accelerator’s beam energy, current or dose, nor does it supply a complete mechanical drawing or a full radiation-safety protocol. It also does not establish a general radiation-resistance rating for PETG.
Keeping the mechanism mechanically simple may avoid relying on sensitive control electronics in a radiation environment. The trade-off is that a simple motor-and-roller arrangement offers less precise monitoring and control than a fully instrumented system. Rotation speed, exposure, material, geometry and charge behaviour all matter; the reported figures should not be copied as if they made the process predictable.
Two cylinders, two different discharges
The published account says two cylinders were prepared. One discharged after being tapped following exposure, producing a comparatively symmetrical pattern. The other discharged spontaneously during exposure and left a more chaotic figure.

The contrast is a reminder that the result is not perfectly deterministic. Small differences in charge distribution, material, geometry, defects and handling can affect where a discharge starts and how it branches. Rotation can address uneven exposure around the circumference, but it cannot guarantee identical patterns.
Why does it look as if it is glowing?
Several effects can be confused in a video or photograph:
- The permanent figure: internal channels and fractures scatter and refract light. The cylinder’s curved surface can magnify or distort their apparent depth and size, making the structure look suspended inside it.
- The discharge flash: the brief release of stored charge can emit light while the figure forms.
- Light during accelerator exposure: the reported footage shows a blue glow associated with electrons interacting with surrounding material. The account says a radiation-shielded camera recorded the exposure; that is a production detail, not a recommendation for filming accelerator work.
- Illumination and reflections: external lighting and reflections can make a clear sculpture appear luminous.
The available reporting does not establish that the finished acrylic emits visible light by itself or continues glowing without an external light source. A striking image is not evidence that live lightning is trapped inside.

Not the same as a plasma bottle
Several different objects are casually called “lightning in a bottle,” but their mechanisms differ:

The American Chemical Society’s plasma-bottle explanation describes a powered gas-discharge effect, a different phenomenon from a permanent figure in solid acrylic. No—not safely as a DIY project. This process combines specialized accelerator equipment and stored high-voltage charge. Accelerator work involves ionizing-radiation hazards, while the discharge stage can involve dangerous electrical energy. A viral clip is not a demonstration that the setup is suitable for a workshop.
Do not try to imitate it with a microwave transformer, Tesla coil, improvised accelerator, high-voltage supply or an impact-based discharge setup. Those approaches can cause fatal shock, fire or arc-flash injuries; an accelerator adds radiation hazards and requires professional controls. A finished acrylic sculpture is not the same thing as a safe manufacturing process.
If you want the look rather than the underlying phenomenon, a commercially made plasma globe, an LED prop or illuminated acrylic can provide a safer visual substitute. Those are not captured Lichtenberg figures. For the actual permanent acrylic phenomenon, a professionally made sculpture is the relevant category; Captured Lightning describes such work, but the available sources do not establish that it sells Electron Impressions’ specific cylinder.

What the project demonstrates
This is best understood as an unusual adaptation of an established electrical-art process. The accelerator supplies the charge, but the cylinder creates a mechanical and distribution problem that a flat block does not have. Rotating the object during exposure is the compact engineering solution that makes a circumferential pattern possible.
The end result is visually close to a tiny frozen storm, but physically it is a solid polymer sculpture marked by a genuine, one-time electrical discharge. That distinction explains both why it looks like lightning and why it does not behave like a powered plasma lamp.
Reported build details and approximate figures above come from Indian Defence Review’s account and contemporary coverage. Exact accelerator specifications and a complete safety protocol are not provided in those sources.
