Bluetooth Remote (also called BT Remote) by Atharok can turn an Android phone into a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse for a compatible TV or streaming device. It is especially useful for typing passwords and searches when you do not want—or cannot use—a Wi-Fi remote app. But it is not a universal remote: compatibility and button support depend on the device, and initial pairing may still require access to the TV’s settings.
Why use a phone as a Bluetooth TV remote?
Typing an email address, password, or search query with a conventional TV remote can be slow. A phone keyboard is easier for text entry, and a phone can also be a handy backup when the physical remote is lost or its batteries are dead. Some remote apps, however, depend on the TV and phone being on the same Wi-Fi network, or offer controls specific to one manufacturer.
Bluetooth Remote takes a different approach: it makes the phone behave like a Bluetooth input accessory. That can be helpful when you need keyboard or mouse-style input and do not want to rely on a network remote. Its strongest case is as an Android-first backup and text-entry tool—not as a guaranteed replacement for every function of the remote that came with your TV.
How Bluetooth Remote works
The app uses Bluetooth Human Interface Device (HID) behavior. In plain terms, the TV or streamer sees the phone as a keyboard and/or mouse, much as it would see a separate Bluetooth keyboard. This is different from a Wi-Fi remote app, which typically discovers a device over the local network and sends commands using a platform-specific protocol.

Because the control link is Bluetooth, the phone and TV generally do not need to be on the same Wi-Fi network for the remote connection. The TV may still need internet access to stream content, and Bluetooth still needs to be enabled and supported. HID also has limits: a device might accept typing but ignore a power, input, channel, voice-search, or other specialized command.
What controls does it offer?
The featured app’s reported interface includes a directional pad, select/OK, home and back, volume and mute, playback and skip controls, number keys, subtitle control, a keyboard mode, and a mouse or air-mouse mode. Those are app features, not a promise that every button will work on every television. Actual behavior depends on what the target device accepts and how it maps external keyboard and mouse input. The source coverage also notes that some PC-oriented options, such as brightness and screenshots, did not work or appear as TV controls in its use.

For most people, the practical test is simple: can you type into a selected text field, and can you navigate the menus you use? Do not assume that seeing a button in the app means the TV supports its command.
Devices to consider—and where not to assume compatibility

“Smart TV” describes a product category, not a single operating system. A Samsung TV, an LG TV, a Roku TV, and an Android TV may handle phone control and Bluetooth accessories in very different ways. The source article identifies Bluetooth Remote as an Android/Google Play app; it does not establish an iPhone version or universal model-by-model support.

How to pair it
- Install Bluetooth Remote from Google Play and open it on your Android phone.
- Grant the Bluetooth permission Android requests for discovery or connection.
- On the TV or streaming device, open its Bluetooth accessory or pairing settings. Exact menu names vary by model and software.
- In the app, select the target device. If the TV displays a pairing prompt or code, follow the on-screen instructions and approve the connection.
- Try keyboard input in a text field, then test directional navigation and any other controls you need.
Important: A phone cannot always complete first-time setup on a TV that has no working remote. You may need the original remote, the TV’s physical buttons, an already-paired accessory, or a USB keyboard or mouse to open Bluetooth settings and approve pairing. This is especially relevant if the remote is lost before Bluetooth has been configured.
When Bluetooth Remote is the better choice
- You have an Android phone and a TV or streamer that accepts Bluetooth keyboard or mouse input.
- You mainly want faster text entry for logins, searches, or passwords.
- The phone and TV cannot share the same Wi-Fi network, or you would rather not set up a network remote.
- You need a backup input method and understand that some remote-specific buttons may not work.
When to use an official remote app instead
Choose the manufacturer’s or platform’s official app when you need deeper device-specific control—such as app launching, voice search, input selection, casting, or other functions that a generic keyboard-and-mouse connection may not provide.

- Google TV or Android TV: Google’s phone remote uses the Google TV app. Google’s setup instructions call for the phone and TV to be on the same Wi-Fi network, selecting the TV, and entering a code shown on the television. See Google’s Android TV remote instructions.
- Samsung: Samsung identifies SmartThings as its phone-remote option, with controls such as volume, apps, and inputs. Samsung says a Samsung Account and internet access are required for phone-remote use. See Samsung’s SmartThings TV guidance.
- LG: LG ThinQ offers model-specific controls, including apps, inputs, volume, and pointer features on supported setups. Compatibility depends on the TV model, webOS version, and region. See LG’s ThinQ setup guidance.
- Roku: Roku’s official mobile app is designed for Roku devices and TVs. Its availability and controls depend on supported software, region, and mobile-control network settings. See Roku’s mobile app instructions.
These apps generally rely on network communication rather than Bluetooth HID. That can mean extra setup or same-network requirements, but it may be worthwhile for platform-specific functions. iPhone owners should use the appropriate official app; the featured Bluetooth Remote app is presented as an Android solution. Apple’s Apple TV Bluetooth accessory guidance concerns accessories for Apple TV, not using an iPhone as a generic Bluetooth remote for any television.

Common problems and fixes
The TV does not appear in the app
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the phone and that you are close to the TV.
- Open the TV’s Bluetooth accessory settings and confirm it is ready to pair.
- Check that the device supports Bluetooth keyboard or mouse input; Bluetooth audio support alone is not enough.
- If the device has many paired accessories, disconnect or forget an unused one, then try again.
- Restart Bluetooth on the phone and restart the TV or streamer. A wired USB keyboard can help establish whether the TV accepts keyboard input at all.
Pairing succeeds, but buttons do nothing
First test the keyboard in a selected text field. If typing works but other controls do not, the device may support keyboard input without accepting the app’s media, power, or navigation mappings. Try forgetting and pairing the device again, then use the official app for controls Bluetooth HID does not provide.

The keyboard connects, but text does not appear
Select a text field and make sure the TV’s on-screen keyboard or text-entry state is active. Some apps restrict external keyboard input; others require Enter or a separate confirmation action. An unexpected input language or keyboard layout can also make typing behave differently from what you expect.
The connection drops
Move closer to the TV, reduce obstructions, charge the phone, and retry. Bluetooth range and interference vary by room and device. If you need control from another room, a local-network remote or a physical remote is usually a better fit.
Is it free, ad-free, and private?
The February 2026 coverage describes Bluetooth Remote as free, ad-free, open source, and requiring minimal permissions. Those details can change, and minimal permissions do not by themselves establish that an app collects no data or is private. Check the current Google Play listing for price, ads or in-app purchases, requested permissions, developer details, Android requirements, update date, and data-safety disclosure before installing. If relying on the open-source claim, check the linked project and its license as well; open source alone is not proof that a particular published app binary is safe.
The practical verdict
Bluetooth Remote is worth trying if you have an Android phone and a compatible Android-based TV or streamer, especially when typing is the main frustration or Wi-Fi remote setup is not an option. Treat it as a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse and backup remote, not as a universal replacement. For Samsung, LG, Roku, or Apple TV-specific features, start with the official platform app; if you need reliable power and input buttons, tactile controls, or setup without a phone, get the exact model’s physical replacement remote.
