The quickest way to put one photo from your iPhone or iPad into a Mac email, note, message, or document may be Universal Clipboard. On the source device, pinch inward with three fingers to copy the image; on the destination, pinch outward to paste it. You can also use ordinary Copy and Paste commands.
It can be faster than AirDrop when the destination app is already open because there is no Share sheet, device picker, or acceptance prompt. It is not a replacement for AirDrop when you need to move many files, preserve an untouched original, or send a photo to someone else.
The three-finger photo-sharing trick
- Open the photo in Photos or another compatible app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Pinch inward with three fingers. This invokes Copy.
- Open the destination app on the other Apple device.
- Click or tap in an image-capable field, then pinch outward with three fingers to paste.
If the gesture is not recognized, use the normal controls: touch and hold the image and choose Copy on iPhone or iPad, press Command-C on a Mac, then choose Paste or press Command-V on the destination Mac. Apple documents the underlying cross-device copy-and-paste behavior in its Universal Clipboard guide; the three-finger motion is a shortcut for those commands.

This is Universal Clipboard, part of Apple’s Continuity features. The image is copied to a temporary clipboard and pasted into an app; it is not automatically added to iCloud Photos or permanently synchronized between your photo libraries. Clipboard content remains available only briefly, or until another copied item replaces it.

Set it up before you try
On every participating device:
- Sign in to the same Apple Account (older articles may say Apple ID).
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- Keep the devices nearby—Apple’s troubleshooting guidance specifies approximately 30 feet (10 meters).
- Enable Handoff.
On current iPhone and iPad software, go to Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity and turn on Handoff. Some older versions label this AirPlay & Handoff.
On a current Mac, open Apple menu → System Settings → General → AirDrop & Handoff, then enable Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices. Older macOS releases use System Preferences → General. Apple lists supported hardware and software generations in its Continuity requirements.

iPhone or iPad to Mac
- Open Photos and display the image.
- Pinch inward with three fingers, or use the image’s Copy command.
- Open Messages, Notes, Mail, Pages, Keynote, or a compatible image editor on the Mac.
- Click where the image should appear.
- Press Command-V, choose Edit → Paste, or try a three-finger outward pinch on a compatible trackpad.
For example, this lets you copy a screenshot from an iPhone directly into a Mac email draft without starting an AirDrop transfer.

- Select the image on the Mac and press Command-C (or choose Edit → Copy).

- Tap Paste, or use the three-finger outward pinch where supported.

iPhone to iPad, or iPad to iPhone
The same process works between the two mobile devices: copy the image on one, switch to an app with an insertion point on the other, and paste. Notes, Mail, Messages, and Pages are practical destinations. If a particular app does not expose an image field, its Paste command may be unavailable even though Universal Clipboard is working.
When it is better than AirDrop
Use Universal Clipboard when you have one image (or a very small selection), both devices belong to you, and the destination app is already open. It removes several workflow steps: no Share sheet, recipient selection, or acceptance dialog. “Faster” here means less friction, not a measured transfer-speed advantage.

When AirDrop or another method wins

If the image will not paste
- Verify that both devices use the same Apple Account.
- Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff on both devices.
- Move them within roughly 30 feet (10 meters).
- Confirm that the destination field accepts images.
- Copy again and paste promptly; the Universal Clipboard is temporary.
- Install available iOS, iPadOS, and macOS updates.
- Restart both devices and retry.
- If permitted by your organization’s policy, test with a VPN temporarily disconnected. Apple notes that VPN configurations blocking local networking can interfere with Continuity.
If the gesture itself is unreliable, stop using it: conventional Copy, Paste, Command-C, and Command-V invoke the same underlying feature.
