There is no universal calendar for replacing thermal paste. For a desktop CPU, replace it whenever you remove the cooler; otherwise, repaste only if temperatures show a persistent, unexplained rise after you check dust, fans, pump operation, mounting, workload and room temperature. A stable system does not need annual repasting. Use the compound maker’s guidance as an inspection reference, not an automatic deadline.
What thermal paste does—and what it cannot fix
Thermal paste, also called thermal interface material (TIM), fills microscopic gaps between the processor’s heat spreader and the cooler’s contact plate. The surfaces may look flat but are not perfectly smooth at that scale. The paste helps heat cross that interface; it does not replace a heatsink, improve case airflow, or compensate for a loose or incorrectly mounted cooler. Intel explains the role of TIM.
A practical replacement schedule
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| New desktop build, temperatures normal | Record a temperature baseline and leave the paste alone. If the cooler came with pre-applied TIM, do not add more. |
| Cooler or processor removed | Clean both contact surfaces and apply fresh paste before reinstalling. Do not reuse disturbed paste or put new paste over old residue. |
| Undisturbed desktop with normal temperatures | Do not repaste just because a year or two has passed. Monitor temperatures and follow the compound maker’s product-specific advice. |
| Gaming, workstation or overclocked system | Check temperatures periodically under comparable conditions. Investigate a persistent rise; higher power and heat do not prove the paste is at fault. |
| System moved or transported | Movement alone does not require repasting. Inspect if the cooler shifted, was removed, or temperatures changed. |
| Laptop or graphics card | Do not apply a desktop CPU schedule automatically. Consider the design and risks of opening the device; GPU assemblies may also need specific pads or putty. |
| Paste has been installed for several years | Around five years is a reasonable inspection point for many systems, not a universal expiration date. If temperatures remain normal, replacement may not be necessary. |
Intel says most systems should not need paste reapplication more than once every few years, while also recommending fresh TIM when the processor or heatsink is reinstalled. Intel’s application guidance and its processor installation guidance support a condition-based approach with a firm rule after cooler removal. Product claims are not interchangeable: Noctua, for example, specifies up to five years on a CPU for NT-H1 and NT-H2, but says performance can last longer and recommends monitoring rather than automatically replacing at five years. See Noctua’s guidance.

When replacement is warranted
- You removed the CPU cooler or processor. Removing a cooler disturbs the paste pattern and can introduce air gaps. Intel advises replacing the TIM rather than applying fresh paste over used material.
- A temperature increase persists in a comparable workload after you have checked other cooling and system changes.
- The CPU has started throttling or shutting down under a workload it previously handled normally. Stop repeated stress testing if it approaches its thermal limit or shuts down; diagnose the cooling problem before using it heavily.
- After cooler removal, the old paste appears contaminated, cracked, displaced or uneven. In any case, apply fresh paste when remounting rather than judging whether the disturbed layer looks reusable.
A temperature rise, noisy fan or shutdown is a reason to investigate, not proof that paste has failed. Modern processors can run hotter as boost, power settings and workloads change. There is no single safe-temperature figure that applies to every CPU; check the processor maker’s limit for the exact model.

Check other causes before disassembly
Compare like with like. Record the CPU and cooler models, room temperature, workload, test duration, fan or pump behavior, and whether the CPU is stock, undervolted, overclocked or power-limited. A raw temperature reading without workload and ambient context is weak evidence. If possible, compare the CPU-to-ambient temperature difference under the same repeatable load. Noctua likewise recommends monitoring the delta rather than replacing paste by date.
- Clean the system: Clear dust filters, fan blades and heatsink fins. Dust can restrict airflow while the paste remains functional.
- Check fans and pump: Confirm fans spin and respond to their curve. For an all-in-one liquid cooler, verify pump operation and check for a blocked radiator.
- Inspect the mount: Look for a shifted cooler, loose screws, incorrect mounting hardware or uneven pressure.
- Review settings and conditions: Check room temperature, BIOS power limits, voltage, fan curves, overclocking and recent BIOS or software changes. A new workload or higher boost behavior can explain a temperature difference.
- Retest: Use the same workload and duration as your baseline. If the rise remains unexplained, repasting and remounting is reasonable.
Case airflow and other system components affect CPU thermal behavior, so paste should not be treated as the only variable. Intel’s system-thermal guidance discusses these broader factors.

How to replace desktop CPU paste
- Shut down safely. Turn off the computer, switch off and unplug the power supply, and let hot components cool. Disconnect the fan or pump cable if needed to remove the cooler.
- Remove the cooler evenly. Loosen screws gradually in a diagonal or cross pattern. If the cooler is stuck to the CPU, gently twist it to break the bond instead of pulling up hard. Abruptly pulling can risk lifting the processor from some sockets.
- Clean both surfaces. Remove old paste from the CPU heat spreader and cooler base with a lint-free cloth or tissue. Isopropyl alcohol is commonly used, but follow the paste or cooler maker’s directions; Noctua says a dry lint-free tissue may be sufficient for its paste. Let the surfaces dry fully, avoid sharp metal tools, and keep residue and cleaning fluid away from electrical contacts.
- Apply fresh paste. Follow the paste maker’s quantity and pattern for your CPU. A small central dot works as a general guide for many standard desktop CPUs, but chip size and shape can call for a different pattern. Do not spread it by hand unless the manufacturer instructs you to, and do not add fresh paste over old paste. Intel warns that too little can leave part of the interface uncovered, while too much can reduce effectiveness or spill onto the motherboard.
- Remount the cooler. Lower it into place without sliding it around where possible. Tighten screws gradually and diagonally for even pressure, following the cooler’s instructions. Check that any protective film has been removed from its base.
- Reconnect and test. Reconnect the fan or pump, confirm it is detected and running, then repeat your baseline workload. If temperatures are still abnormal, recheck contact, mounting hardware, fan direction, pump operation and CPU power settings.
Application patterns vary by socket and processor size; for example, Noctua’s instructions show different patterns for different CPUs. Use the instructions for your particular compound and hardware rather than treating the pea-sized-dot method as universal.

Laptops
There is no universal laptop repaste interval. Cooling assemblies and disassembly procedures vary; opening a laptop can damage clips or cables, disturb thermal pads, or affect warranty coverage. If rising temperatures, unusual fan behavior or throttling suggest a problem, use the device’s service documentation or a qualified repair service—especially if the machine is difficult to open.
Graphics cards
GPU repasting is a more involved repair than desktop CPU repasting. A card may use thermal pads or putty on memory and voltage-regulation components, and those materials need suitable thickness and compressibility to maintain contact. Do not substitute ordinary paste for pads or putty, or assume a CPU repaste schedule applies to a GPU.

- NEXT-LEVEL THERMAL PERFORMANCE: MX-7 features a performance-optimized, dense, and highly viscous consistency. Its high filler content ensures exceptional heat transfer
- LONG-TERM STABILITY: High cohesion prevents pump-out, dry-out, or bleeding even under repeated thermal cycles, ensuring long-lasting and consistent performance without the need for frequent reapplication
- PERFECT APPLICATION: MX-7 cannot be spread manually by design. Its low adhesion allows the paste to distribute naturally under cooler pressure, forming a thin bond line without trapping air bubbles
- SAFE FOR ALL DEVICES: MX-7 is electrically non-conductive and non-capacitive, making it completely safe for CPUs, GPUs, laptops, consoles, and other, no risk of short circuits or electrical discharge
- INCLUDES MX CLEANER: Thoroughly removes old thermal paste and prepares contact surfaces for optimal performance before applying new thermal compound.
Liquid metal
Liquid metal is not a routine substitute for conventional paste. It is electrically conductive and can react with some metals, so it requires careful compatibility checks and specialized handling. Follow the device and compound makers’ instructions; if you are not confident, use a qualified service provider.

Do not confuse tube life with installed life
Unopened storage life, storage life after opening and service life after application are different measures. As one product-specific example, Noctua says NT-H1 and NT-H2 can be used for up to two years after opening when stored correctly, and specifies up to five years of use on a CPU. Those figures apply to those products, not every compound. Noctua’s opened-tube guidance explains the storage claim. If a tube’s consistency has changed, check its manufacturer’s advice rather than assuming an old tube is usable.

If repasting does not solve it
Persistent high temperatures after a fresh application often point to another problem. Confirm the cooler’s protective film is off, the base makes full contact, the correct brackets and spacers are installed, and screws are evenly tightened. Check fan direction, radiator airflow and pump operation; review CPU voltage and power limits. If available, test with a known-good cooler. Avoid prolonged stress testing when the CPU is near its thermal limit or shutting down.
