Lift the handset of Whispering Wires and the disconnected vintage telephone answers with a poem. Théo Z. V. Champion—also known as Rootkid and tzvc—converted a 1960s French Socotel 63 into a 2025 interactive installation that combines a Raspberry Pi, networked audio and an archive of more than 3,000 spoken-word recordings.

A telephone that answers with poetry

The artwork starts with an instinctive action: someone sees an old telephone and lifts the receiver. Instead of a dial tone or silence, a human voice begins speaking close to the listener’s ear. That surprise is the central gesture of Whispering Wires, listed by Champion as a 2025 work on his project page.

The telephone is not merely a nostalgic shell around a music player. Its handset is the control surface. Picking it up is the button, and the one-person listening position makes the encounter unusually intimate. The technology supports the atmosphere: an obsolete communications object becomes a vessel for recorded human voices.

What hardware is inside the Socotel 63?

The donor is a push-button Socotel 63, a French telephone associated with the 1960s. The original telephone line is no longer the functional system; the casing and handset provide the physical interface.

Part What is established What remains unspecified
Computer Hackster identifies a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W; Champion’s page says more generally “Raspberry Pi Zero.” The sources do not publish a complete software image or bill of materials.
Connectivity Wi-Fi is used to access or stream audio over the internet. Offline caching and recovery behavior are not documented.
Audio An amplifier drives the handset earpiece, with an additional speaker in the telephone body. Amplifier model, impedance, power rating and wiring are not stated.
Mechanical fit Raspberry Pi Magazine coverage describes a 3D-printed internal support or enclosure. The design files and exact dimensions are not established.

For the model distinction, the safest wording is that the project is described as using a Pi Zero 2 W in Hackster’s technical feature, while the artist uses the broader Pi Zero label. Older magazine coverage also uses Pi Zero W terminology, so those names should not be treated as interchangeable specifications.

From pickup to spoken poem

The documented signal path is straightforward:

  1. The receiver is lifted and the installation detects that interaction.
  2. A recording is selected at random.
  3. The audio is retrieved through the networked Raspberry Pi system.
  4. Telephone-style filtering is applied.
  5. Amplified sound reaches the handset earpiece, with a second speaker contributing sound from the body.

The available descriptions do not identify the sensor. It could be a switch, reed sensor, Hall sensor or another mechanism, but none can be asserted as Champion’s implementation. They also do not establish whether pickup and hang-up are detected separately, whether every lift produces a new selection, or what happens during an outage.

How the poetry library was prepared

Champion’s reported collection contains more than 3,000 spoken pieces associated with material in the Poetry Foundation’s online archive. The preparation workflow, described by Hackster, uses automation for the laborious editing steps:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Gather spoken-word recordings associated with the archive.
  2. Run WhisperX to produce transcripts with word-level timing.
  3. Use a language model identified in the coverage as GPT-4o-mini to estimate where an introduction ends and the poem begins.
  4. Cut away introductory remarks and retain the poem segment.
  5. Store or stream the prepared recordings for random playback.

AI is therefore a production tool, not the poet. The installation plays recordings of human poets or readers; it is not described as generating new poems.

The rights question

Hackster reports that Champion found an “open access” route to the Poetry Foundation database. That phrase does not by itself grant permission to download, transform, redistribute or publicly exhibit every audio file. Those are separate questions involving the recording, the underlying poem, the reader’s performance and the venue. Anyone making a reproduction should begin with audio whose licence explicitly permits the intended use.

Why it sounds like a telephone

The project deliberately narrows modern recordings to evoke telephone transmission. Champion describes a frequency range of approximately 300–3,400 Hz and an 8 kHz sampling rate, with digital filtering before playback. The result removes much of the bass and treble and makes speech feel constrained and close.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.

These settings are a recognizable approximation, not a complete simulation of every historical telephone network. Real systems varied with handset design, line conditions, exchanges and later codecs. A reproduction can add compression, noise or mild distortion for a stronger period impression, but those effects are aesthetic choices rather than documented requirements of the original installation.

Could you build a similar installation?

Yes, as a conceptual reproduction, but it is not a matter of placing a Pi in a phone and running a single script. A practical build has to solve sensing, audio, mechanical fit, power, networking and rights at the same time.

A sensible build path

  1. Choose a donor. Use a nonvaluable, repairable telephone. Do not modify a rare collector piece unless the intervention is reversible.
  2. Plan the receiver sensor. Add a reliable pickup detector without damaging the original mechanics. Debounce it in software so movement does not trigger several poems.
  3. Choose the computer. A Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W-class board supplies compact computing and Wi-Fi. The official product page is Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W. An older Pi Zero W may suit a simpler local-audio design, but it is a different, older platform; see Raspberry Pi Zero W.
  4. Match the audio hardware. The Pi needs an appropriate amplifier and a transducer that fits the handset earpiece. Check impedance, gain, noise and available space rather than choosing by wattage alone.
  5. Mount and power safely. A custom bracket can hold the board and amplifier. Provide strain relief, ventilation and a regulated supply, and isolate or remove any legacy wiring before powering the modified device.
  6. Start offline. Use a locally stored set of properly licensed clips first. Add streaming only after pickup, playback, reboot and failure behavior are reliable.
  7. Add the telephone treatment. Resample to 8 kHz and band-limit roughly to 300–3,400 Hz, then tune level and distortion on the actual handset.
  8. Test public-use cases. Check repeated lifts, hang-up timing, corrupted files, boot delays, network loss and recovery after a power interruption.

This is an engineering plan, not Champion’s exact instructions. The reviewed sources do not provide his GPIO assignments, sensor type, amplifier chip, power design, dependency versions or repository.

What can fail in a reproduction?

  • False triggers: vibration or a loose hook mechanism can activate playback repeatedly.
  • No trigger: an inaccessible or worn mechanical assembly may require a separate sensor mount.
  • Quiet or distorted speech: handset earpieces often need more suitable amplification than a Pi can provide directly.
  • Network silence: Wi-Fi, DNS or streaming failures can leave an online-only installation mute; local fallback is safer for exhibitions.
  • Slow readiness: a Pi must boot before visitors can use it, so startup behavior matters.
  • Bad clip boundaries: automatic transcription and segmentation can remove openings, endings or repeated lines and need human checking.
  • Unsafe telephone wiring: never connect a modified installation to an active telephone line without appropriate isolation and expertise.

Why the project works artistically

Whispering Wires succeeds because the hardware’s meaning and behavior agree. A telephone promises a voice at the other end; the installation fulfills that promise without pretending to restore a working landline. The receiver forces close listening, while the random selection keeps the encounter unrepeatable. Wi-Fi, speech recognition and compact computing remain mostly invisible, leaving the visitor with an old object that seems, briefly, to have found something to say.

Champion’s own description and the technical account in Hackster document the core architecture. Additional maker context, including the internal 3D-printed support, appears in Raspberry Pi Magazine issue 152; earlier coverage is in issue 151. None of those sources is a complete build guide, so reproductions should treat the published details as a design foundation rather than a wiring specification.
