You can control whether it appears on the front end from your profile, while developers can change its visibility or customize its menu through WordPress hooks.
What the WordPress Toolbar does
The Toolbar sits above the site for signed-in users and provides shortcuts to common administration tasks. Depending on the site and your permissions, it can include links to WordPress information, options to create posts or pages and add users, comment-review access, profile links, and alerts about plugin or theme updates. Its entries are not identical on every site: context, user permissions, themes, plugins, and WordPress version can affect what appears.
WordPress’s Toolbar documentation was last updated January 16, 2023. Its terminology and documented behavior are useful reference points, though labels and available entries can vary across installations.
Show or hide it while viewing the site
To change the setting for your own account, go to Administration > Users > Your Profile and toggle Show Toolbar when viewing site under the Toolbar option. This preference controls the front end—the site as visitors see it. It does not hide the Toolbar on Administration Screens.

This is the direct choice when one user wants a less cluttered front end. For site-wide behavior or a custom implementation, developers can use WordPress’s documented visibility API, described below.
If the Toolbar is missing on the front end
- Check the profile preference. In Administration > Users > Your Profile, make sure Show Toolbar when viewing site is enabled.
- Check the theme footer. WordPress lists a theme that does not call
wp_footer()in itsfooter.phptemplate as a possible cause. - Check plugins. A plugin may have disabled the Toolbar.
These are possible causes documented by WordPress, not a diagnosis of any particular site. Inspect the theme and active plugins before changing code; the profile checkbox alone cannot correct a missing footer call or a plugin-level change.

| What you want to change | Approach | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Hide or show the front-end Toolbar for your own account | Profile preference: Show Toolbar when viewing site | Individual user; does not hide it in Administration Screens |
| Control whether the Toolbar is displayed through code | show_admin_bar filter or the show_admin_bar( $show ) function |
Code-driven behavior; interactions with other plugins are possible |

Control visibility with WordPress code
WordPress documents the show_admin_bar filter as the recommended way to hide the front-end Toolbar: “Returning false to this hook is the recommended way to hide the admin bar.” The separate show_admin_bar( $show ) function sets its display status and may be called immediately on plugin load or placed in a theme’s functions.php.
These are developer-level controls, not profile preferences. Choose an implementation suited to the site and account for other plugins that may also affect display. Avoid hiding the Toolbar as a substitute for checking a missing wp_footer() call or investigating why a particular user cannot see it.

Customize Toolbar menu items
The WP_Admin_Bar class reference describes the core class that generates the Toolbar. WordPress says modifications are generally made by modifying the $wp_admin_bar object passed through the admin_bar_menu hook reference.
Use the current API to add, remove, or adjust entries, and apply capability checks appropriate to the action a menu item opens. A link that exposes an administrative destination should not be shown to users who lack permission to perform that action.

The WordPress plugin-directory listing for Admin Bar Editor describes a visual interface for hiding Toolbar items, reorganizing menus, and changing styling and position. The listing also describes adding links in its Pro version. Treat these as listing claims rather than a guarantee about your site: check the plugin’s current compatibility, update activity, permissions, and terms before installing or relying on it. The listing does not establish a verified affiliate or referral arrangement.
