The Washington Post launched “Your Personal Podcast” in December 2025 even though three reported rounds of internal testing found that 68% to 84% of generated scripts failed the evaluation. The failures reportedly included mispronunciations, distorted summaries, misattributed statements, fabricated quotations and AI-generated commentary that could sound like the Post’s own editorial position.
That does not mean every episode was inaccurate, or that the percentage was a universal accuracy score. It means most scripts in the internal pass/fail evaluation were judged not to meet the test’s standard—and that testers were reportedly instructed to fail scripts when uncertain. The central issue is therefore not simply that an AI system made mistakes. It is why a news organization released a product after its own review indicated that many outputs were not publishable.
What “Your Personal Podcast” was supposed to do
“Your Personal Podcast” was an AI-generated audio feature inside The Washington Post’s mobile app. According to the Post’s help-center documentation, subscribers and registered users could choose topics, AI-generated hosts and episode duration. The system could also use signals such as a user’s reading history to personalize the briefing.
The feature was presented as a personalized news experience rather than a conventional podcast recorded and edited by journalists. During the beta period described by the help page, episodes were limited to eight minutes. The Post also described a planned ability to ask follow-up questions using its AI technology.

The distinction between narration and generation matters. This was not simply an approved Washington Post article being read aloud by a synthetic voice. The system generated a new conversational script from Post journalism. That required it to select material, summarize it, organize it, attribute statements and turn written reporting into spoken dialogue. Each additional step created opportunities to change the meaning of the source.
A short timeline of the rollout
- December 10, 2025: The Post announced the feature, with coverage describing it as an effort to create a more personalized audio product.
- December 11: Semafor reported newsroom concerns about live outputs, including fictional and misattributed quotations.
- December 14–15: Semafor reported the results of internal testing and the decision to release the feature while continuing to address problems.
- February 6, 2026: The Post announced the suspension of Post Reports, a separate human-produced daily podcast.
Keeping those stages separate is important. The initial reports concerned errors encountered after release. The later reports concerned internal testing and the product team’s decision to proceed despite the results.
How severe were the internal test results?
Semafor reported that an internal review covered three rounds of testing, with failure rates between 68% and 84% of generated scripts. Put another way, the reported pass rate was approximately 16% to 32%—but that is an arithmetic implication, not a separately reported accuracy statistic.

The testing reportedly used a pass/fail standard, and evaluators were told to fail a script when they were unsure as a precaution. A failed script could therefore contain a mixture of accurate and unacceptable material. The metric also appears to have covered more than factual correctness, including attribution, tone and editorial acceptability.
The available reporting does not establish several details that would be needed to interpret the numbers fully:
- How many scripts were tested in each round.
- Which subjects and source articles were included.
- Whether evaluators worked blind.
- Whether the test used the same model, prompts and production workflow as the public product.
- Whether reviewers were newsroom staff, product staff or both.
- Whether a failure required one serious defect or any problem at all.
- Whether the percentages referred to scripts, complete episodes, claims or individual errors.
Those limitations do not make the results unimportant. They make the correct interpretation narrower: the product reportedly failed its internal editorial evaluation at a very high rate under the organization’s own test conditions.
What the system reportedly got wrong
Semafor’s reporting described errors ranging from awkward audio presentation to failures that strike at the foundation of journalistic credibility.

1. Pronunciation mistakes
Names, places and technical terms can be difficult for synthetic voices. A mispronunciation may be embarrassing or confusing, but it is generally less serious than changing the underlying facts. Even so, pronunciation errors can matter when two names sound similar or when the spoken version is the listener’s only access to the story.
2. Distorted summaries
A generated briefing can alter a source’s meaning without inventing an entire event. It may omit a qualification, reverse the emphasis of a statement or create a misleading chronology. These errors are especially difficult for listeners to detect because the audio can sound fluent and confident.
3. Misattributed statements
Attribution tells readers who made a claim and whether it came from a source, a critic, a government official or the newspaper’s own reporting. If the system assigns a statement to the wrong person, it changes the story even when the words themselves appeared somewhere in the source material.
4. Fabricated quotations
Reported examples included quotations that were invented or assigned to the wrong speaker. A fabricated quote is not an ordinary wording error. It can falsely represent a person, damage the credibility of the publication and create serious reputational or legal risks.

The system reportedly added commentary that could be understood as the Post’s own view. That blurs the line between a journalist’s reporting, a source’s opinion and an AI-generated transition or interpretation. A listener may reasonably assume that anything delivered by a Washington Post-branded host has passed through the paper’s editorial process.
Semafor also reported simulated conversational fillers—“ums,” “uhs” and pauses—to make the hosts sound more natural. That design choice may improve the listening experience, but it can also make synthetic material feel more like a human-reviewed broadcast and make the experimental nature of the product less apparent.
Why release it anyway?
According to Semafor, the product review team recommended launching while continuing to “iterate through the remaining issues.” That is a familiar software-development approach: release a beta, observe real-world use, gather feedback and improve the system.

It is also where ordinary product logic collides with newsroom responsibility. A consumer app can often tolerate interface bugs or incomplete features. A news product that generates new language under an established publication’s name faces a different threshold. A single fabricated quotation may be unacceptable even if most of the surrounding summary is correct.
The decision exposed several governance questions:
- Did editorial or standards staff have authority to block the launch?
- Who owned the final approval decision?
- Were the internal results escalated to senior leadership?
- What launch gate separated a technical beta from an editorially acceptable product?
- Was a human reviewing every generated script, or were automated safeguards used instead?
- Could the feature be disabled quickly if serious errors appeared?
- Could the Post identify and correct the exact episode each user heard?
Personalization makes those questions harder. Instead of one fixed program that editors can review once, the system can create many combinations of stories, voices and wording. That increases the number of outputs that need monitoring and makes it difficult to know precisely what any individual listener received.
The Post’s defense—and why “beta” is not the whole answer
The Post described the feature as a beta and said it would launch new features only if they proved successful for customers, according to statements reported by Semafor and other outlets. The company also presented the product as an experimental experience based on Washington Post journalism, not as a traditional human-produced podcast.
That is a meaningful distinction. A beta label tells users that a product is unfinished. It may reasonably set expectations about missing controls, changing features or occasional technical problems. But it does not automatically tell users that a generated briefing may contain fabricated quotations or alter the meaning of reporting.
For a news organization, an effective warning would need to explain the nature of the risk, not just the product’s development stage. Users would also benefit from prominent links to the source articles, visible disclosure that the script was generated, and a simple way to report or correct an error.
How newsroom staff reacted
Semafor reported distress among Washington Post journalists. Internal messages quoted in coverage described the tool as warping the paper’s journalism and distributing errors to the audience at scale. Another staffer reportedly called the product a “total disaster” and said the newsroom was embarrassed. The Post’s head of standards, Karen Pensiero, reportedly described the situation as frustrating.
These comments are evidence of an internal standards dispute, not an independent audit of every public episode. The distinction matters: staff criticism can show that journalists believed the rollout threatened editorial norms, while recordings, transcripts or reproducible examples would be needed to establish the exact frequency and severity of public-facing errors.

Still, the reported reaction highlights the unusual accountability problem. The journalists who wrote the underlying articles could find their work transformed into statements they never wrote and would not approve, while audiences could reasonably attribute the final audio to the Post.
The Post’s AI policy appears to raise the same concerns
The Washington Post’s published AI policy emphasizes transparency, innovation and accuracy. It says accuracy cannot be assumed, verification is critical, and journalists and technologists should be involved in vetting, editing and contextualizing AI products.
The reported rollout appears in tension with those stated commitments. The relevant questions are not whether the Post used AI at all, but whether the generated scripts were verified, whether newsroom journalists had meaningful authority in the process, whether the AI nature of the output was sufficiently disclosed and what safeguards substituted for human review.
That is not the same as declaring a formal policy violation. The available reporting does not establish the complete approval workflow or every control that may have existed. It does show why the policy’s emphasis on verification is consequential: source articles written by humans do not guarantee that a newly generated script will preserve their facts, context or attribution.

The product arrived amid reported pressure to improve the Post’s performance in podcasting and other digital products, where competitors such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal had been stronger. Semafor framed the feature as part of broader efforts to develop new products and reach audiences, including younger listeners.
Digiday reported that the product was developed under a multiyear agreement with ElevenLabs, a voice-generation company whose technology has also been used for article audio by publishers including the Post, Time and The Atlantic. The partnership establishes technology involvement; it does not establish that ElevenLabs caused any particular editorial error. The available reporting does not identify which model, retrieval system, prompt, editing workflow or quality-control process produced each failure.

Nor does the evidence prove that cost-cutting was the Post’s sole motive or that the system replaced journalists. The product generated audio from Washington Post reporting. The documented issue is the transformation of that reporting into a new, potentially unreliable script under the Post’s brand.

What happened afterward?
The status of “Your Personal Podcast” should be described cautiously. The latest official Washington Post help-center documentation located for this account still described the feature as available through the app and in beta, with the eight-minute beta limit. That documentation was not definitive proof of its exact availability on September 15, 2026, so it would be inaccurate to state that the feature was certainly still active today—or that it was permanently removed—without newer direct evidence.
The Post’s February 6, 2026, announcement about suspending Post Reports concerned a separate human-produced daily podcast. It should not be presented as proof that the AI feature was canceled or replaced. The Post’s podcast pages also continued to list other programming after the suspension.
What a safer version would require
The Post could have reduced the risk by narrowing what the system was allowed to generate rather than treating the problem only as one of prompt refinement. Reasonable safeguards for an AI news-audio product would include:

- Approved-script narration: Use synthetic voices to read journalist-approved text without allowing the system to rewrite it.
- Source-constrained generation: Require every factual statement to map to a specific passage in a source article.
- Quotation verification: Compare every quotation with the source text and block output when the wording or speaker does not match.
- Human review for high-risk stories: Require review for political, legal, medical, crisis and quotation-heavy coverage.
- Visible traceability: Display source links and, where practical, show which article supports each segment.
- Pronunciation controls: Maintain pronunciation dictionaries for names, places and specialist terms.
- Refusal behavior: Have the system decline to summarize when it cannot find adequate supporting material.
- Rapid rollback: Maintain a kill switch, versioned scripts and the ability to replace or retract faulty episodes.
- Post-launch sampling: Audit outputs continuously rather than relying only on pre-release testing.
Another option would have been a smaller internal pilot. A controlled test with employees or invited users would have allowed the Post to measure failure modes without presenting experimental output to a broad audience as a branded news briefing.
The larger lesson for AI-generated journalism
The Post episode is not evidence that every AI audio product is doomed, nor that synthetic voices are inherently incompatible with journalism. It is evidence that the risk depends on the task. Reading approved copy aloud is narrower and easier to audit than generating a conversational interpretation of several articles.
The more useful standard is whether an organization can answer five questions for every output:
- What source material supports each factual claim?
- Who checked the generated script before publication?
- How are quotations and attributions verified?
- How does the listener know what was generated?
- How can the publisher correct or retract a specific version?
A beta label may be sufficient for an unfinished interface. It is not, by itself, a substitute for editorial controls when the failure mode includes fabricated quotations and altered reporting.

The Washington Post’s reported decision is consequential because the internal testing did not merely reveal occasional imperfections. It reportedly showed that most tested scripts failed the organization’s evaluation, while the product team chose to release the feature and iterate. That makes the episode a governance story as much as an AI story: the decisive question was not whether the model could make mistakes, but whether the newsroom’s standards had the authority to prevent those mistakes from reaching readers and listeners.
