In the U.S., a JustWatch listing checked on July 30, 2026 showed the movie available through Max/HBO Max, including an HBO Max Amazon Channel listing. “HBO Max” in third-party listings generally refers to the same Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service now branded Max, while an Amazon Channel subscription is a separate billing route.

The release timeline: theaters, digital, then Max
The film’s home-release schedule is easy to confuse because its premium digital release came well before its subscription-streaming debut:

The film reached digital storefronts about two weeks after its U.S. theatrical opening and Max roughly two months later. That rapid home-release sequence does not, by itself, prove that the Max date was caused by the box-office result; distribution windows can reflect broader scheduling and contractual plans.
Why is it called a box-office flop?
Box Office Mojo records show a worldwide theatrical gross of $20,758,572, comprising approximately $9.16 million domestically and $11.6 million internationally. In the U.S., it opened to about $4.55 million from 2,602 theaters.

The weak start was followed by steep declines. Its second domestic weekend fell approximately 72.9% to $1.24 million, while the third weekend dropped to roughly $450,000 as the theater count contracted sharply. Those results were far below the commercial expectations attached to the Lord of the Rings name, supporting the description “commercial disappointment” or “box-office flop by theatrical-gross standards.”
That wording needs an important qualification: box-office gross is not studio profit. Theaters retain part of ticket sales, and marketing, distribution, financing, licensing, and production expenses are not included in the total. Without a verified production budget and complete cost data, it is not responsible to claim a precise loss or say exactly how much money Warner Bros. made or lost.

What is the movie about?
Set 183 years before the original Lord of the Rings film trilogy, the story follows Helm Hammerhand, the legendary king of Rohan. A conflict with Wulf, a Dunlending lord seeking revenge, forces Helm and his people into a desperate last stand at the Hornburg—the fortress later known as Helm’s Deep.
Helm’s daughter, Héra, is a central character. That makes the film more than a retelling of a familiar trilogy battle: it explores an earlier chapter in Rohan’s history while expanding on material associated with Tolkien’s appendices and the kingdom’s background. The synopsis above avoids the ending and major late-film revelations.
Is it an anime, and how does it connect to the trilogy?
The War of the Rohirrim is an animated fantasy action-adventure film made with strong Japanese anime influence. Kenji Kamiyama directed it. The principal voice cast includes Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand, Gaia Wise as Héra, Luke Pasqualino as Wulf, and Miranda Otto as Éowyn.
Otto’s return as Éowyn provides a voice and narrative link to the earlier film trilogy. The movie is a Middle-earth prequel set long before Frodo’s story, not a continuation of the trilogy’s plot. It is also not directed by Peter Jackson, and it is not a direct adaptation of a complete Tolkien novel. Its story develops the history of Rohan for animation.

Critical reaction has been mixed rather than uniformly negative. Reviewers have highlighted the film’s visual scale, mythology, music, and focus on Rohan, while criticisms have included its approximately 134-minute runtime, familiar story beats, uneven animation, and the challenge of matching the cultural impact of Jackson’s live-action trilogy. A poor theatrical run does not demonstrate that every viewer disliked the film. A franchise movie can appeal strongly to dedicated fans while failing to attract a large general audience in theaters.

It may be a poor fit if you expect Peter Jackson’s live-action style, want a direct Tolkien novel adaptation, dislike long animated features, or prefer stories that require little familiarity with Rohan and Middle-earth. Casual viewers can follow the central conflict, but fans of the original trilogy will recognize more of the historical and visual connections.
Other ways to watch
The film’s premium digital rental and purchase release began on December 27, 2024. Current storefront availability and prices vary, so check your preferred digital retailer. Physical Blu-ray and DVD editions may also suit collectors who do not want to depend on a rotating streaming catalog.
In the U.S., the movie was also listed through the Max/HBO Max channel on Prime Video. This is an add-on channel route, not an indication that every Max title is automatically included with a standard Prime Video subscription. Readers who already receive Max through a television or internet bundle may not need a second direct subscription.
