It can fly fast or slow, depending on which of its two interchangeable tails is fitted. BionicBird advertises its Swift ornithopter with a Speed tail for flights up to 31 km/h (19 mph) and a Precision tail for stable forward flight as slow as about 3.5 km/h (2 mph). Those are manufacturer performance claims, not independently verified test results—and the slower figure does not mean the aircraft can hover.
What is The Swift?
The Swift is a small, flapping-wing aircraft—an ornithopter—from BionicBird, designed by French engineer Edwin Van Ruymbeke. Rather than using exposed propellers like a typical multirotor drone, it generates lift and thrust by flapping its wings. The intended appeal is the experience of piloting a bird-like flying machine, not taking aerial photos.
The defining detail is easy to misread: it does not fly with two tails attached at once. It comes with two interchangeable tail configurations, each intended to suit a different flight regime. New Atlas’ product report describes five app-based settings for each tail, adjusting characteristics such as speed, glide, and response.

The tail is an aerodynamic configuration, not merely a cosmetic part or a fast/slow switch. Each setup changes the way the aircraft behaves and the flight characteristics it prioritizes. The advertised figures do not establish that one setup delivers the best speed and the best low-speed control at the same time.

BionicBird’s official product page and the earlier report give the headline speed figures, but the available sources do not provide an independent test method, measurement equipment, or conditions. Treat 31 km/h as a claimed maximum—not a guaranteed speed in every flight. Actual performance can depend on factors such as battery state, pilot input, and flying conditions.
Slow flight is not hovering
The 3.5-km/h figure describes very slow forward flight. It is not a hover speed: The Swift is not a quadcopter, and the sources do not establish that it can remain stationary in midair. A multirotor can counter gravity with downward thrust while holding position; a flapping-wing aircraft moving forward at low speed is doing something different.
The Precision tail makes indoor flying plausible in a sufficiently spacious, controlled environment, but it does not make every room suitable. The aircraft still needs room to turn and recover. Furniture, people, pets, doorways, ceiling fans, and air movement can all create collision hazards. A large clear room, gym, or similar space is a more sensible setting than a cramped living room.
How the aircraft flies and is controlled
The wings produce the primary aerodynamic force through repeated flapping. The tail influences pitch, stability, and the aircraft’s speed behavior. BionicBird says onboard inertial sensing and real-time flight corrections help stabilize the aircraft; the pilot supplies commands through a smartphone app. The optional X-Play accessory is a joystick-style attachment that mounts over a phone’s touchscreen, rather than a separate radio transmitter.

The product is intended for hand launch or a ground launch using small wheels. The manufacturer lists a quick-swap battery system, a 60-mAh battery, and an approximately 13-minute charging time. Earlier campaign-era coverage reported roughly 10–12 minutes of flight per charge, a control range of about 150 m (492 ft), and a weight of approximately 10.9 g (0.4 oz). These figures come from different product descriptions and should be treated as specifications or claims, not as results from a standardized independent test. Confirm the final package details and phone compatibility with BionicBird before ordering.
Reported construction materials include expanded polypropylene foam, carbon-fiber rods, and titanium. The very low weight makes the aircraft easy to carry, but also suggests caution in wind and turbulent air. The sources do not establish a wind-speed rating, so do not assume it will handle breezy outdoor conditions.
What it is—and what it is not
The Swift is best described as a recreational, biomimetic flying aircraft or hobby ornithopter. It has stabilization assistance and remote control, but it is not a camera-equipped quadcopter, an autonomous commercial UAV, or a research-grade aircraft.

- No onboard camera: BionicBird’s FAQ says The Swift is not intended to provide aerial photography or video.
- Do not expect multirotor hovering: Low-speed forward flight is not the same as holding position in the air.
- Indoor-capable does not mean collision-proof: Choose a clear space and keep people and animals away from the flight path.
- “Crash-proof” is not a guarantee: Marketing language about a resilient design should not be read as assurance that the aircraft cannot be damaged.
Availability and the preorder caveat
The Swift was covered during its Kickstarter campaign. BionicBird’s current product page presents it for preorder and schedules first deliveries for September 2026. That is the manufacturer’s current target, not a guarantee of delivery on a particular date; preorder timing, included accessories, final specifications, and fulfillment can change.

Campaign-era coverage cited a €109 (about US$129) pledge and a planned €156 (about US$185) retail price. Those are historical figures, not confirmed current prices. Check the official listing for the current price, shipping, taxes, warranty, replacement-part availability, and refund terms before committing.
Who is it for?
The Swift may appeal to hobbyists curious about biomimicry and ornithopters, drone pilots who want a different flying experience, educators demonstrating flight and stabilization, or gift buyers looking for something unusual. It makes most sense if you have access to both open outdoor space and a large, uncluttered indoor area.
It is a poor fit if you want aerial photos, stable hovering, autonomous navigation, long endurance, or dependable operation in wind. Its central trade-off is novelty and bird-like flight in exchange for a less conventional, more space-dependent experience than a typical multirotor.
