The Starry Night is Vincent van Gogh’s oil painting of a reimagined night landscape, made at Saint-Rémy in June 1889. The original belongs to The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York—not the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Its famous sky draws on observation, but the village, cypress and proportions are not a straightforward record of the view from Van Gogh’s window.

What does The Starry Night show?
A dark cypress rises at the left, its flame-like shape cutting across the sky. Below it sits a compact village with clustered houses and a prominent church steeple, set against rolling hills. Above, the night sky fills much of the canvas with broad, curling bands of blue, white and yellow. A crescent moon glows at the upper right; the bright star near the center-left is identified by MoMA as Venus.

The eye moves between the two parts of the scene: the small, settled village and the enormous, restless sky. Repeated arcs and spirals carry movement across the upper half, while the cypress links the dark foreground to the heavens. The painting feels unified, but its elements do not obey ordinary scale or perspective.

Was it painted from Van Gogh’s window?
Partly from observation, but substantially reimagined. Van Gogh was staying at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy when he painted the work. The view from his room informed his landscapes, and the sky was rooted in his close observation of nature. But the village in The Starry Night is based on other views and could not be seen from his window in the form shown. He also enlarged the cypress and brought it closer to the viewer, while rearranging and intensifying features of the landscape and sky.
It is therefore misleading to call the painting either a literal window view or an entirely invented fantasy. It combines looking, reconstruction and artistic alteration. That transformation is central to its effect: the image is recognizably a landscape, yet it expresses more than a specific place at a specific moment. What does the painting mean?
There is no single confirmed explanation for every element. Interpretations can help explain how the painting works, but they should not be mistaken for a key that Van Gogh supplied or for settled fact.

- An emotional landscape: The sweeping, agitated sky can suggest wonder, longing or unrest. Its expressive force comes partly from the way the strokes make the sky seem to move, rather than merely describing it.
- Earth against sky: The orderly village and the vast, turbulent heavens create a contrast between human scale and the immensity of nature.
- The cypress as a link: The tall tree visually joins earth and sky. Viewers and scholars have associated cypresses with mourning, death or eternity, but those are interpretations, not documented certainties about Van Gogh’s intention.
- Spiritual readings: Some readings find spiritual or religious resonance in the stars and heavens. The painting should not, however, be presented as a proven coded biblical scene.
Van Gogh’s stay at Saint-Rémy followed severe mental-health crises, and that context matters to his life and work. It does not make the painting a diagnostic record: its style alone cannot establish a medical explanation for its forms. MoMA’s account emphasizes the work’s mood, expression, symbol and visible painting process rather than reducing it to biography.

How did Van Gogh make the sky look alive?
Van Gogh used paint and brushwork to do more than outline objects. His strokes are visible, directional and often thick enough to give the surface a tactile quality—a technique commonly called impasto. In the sky, the marks curve, coil and sweep. Repeated strokes create a rhythm that makes separate areas of color seem to flow into one another.
Blue dominates the sky, set against yellow and pale highlights around the moon and stars. White and pale-blue strokes add variation; dark green and near-black tones anchor the cypress and foreground, while the village and hills use more muted earth colors. The contrast helps the lights appear luminous without turning the scene into a realistic account of how the night would look to the eye.

Space is also altered. The oversized cypress, compact village and compressed landscape do not follow a neutral, photographic perspective. Brushwork, color and proportion both describe a world and draw attention to the act of painting it. In that sense, the marks are part of the subject. MoMA’s collection analysis and art historian Richard Thomson’s MoMA essay discuss this expressive use of color and paint.
Why did The Starry Night become so famous?
The painting was not a celebrated museum work in Van Gogh’s lifetime. After his death, it passed through family, dealers and collectors before MoMA acquired it in 1941 through the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest. Its history is documented in MoMA’s provenance record. The museum’s acquisition gave the painting a lasting home in an institution central to the history and public presentation of modern art.

Its later fame is also a history of reproduction. The bold silhouette, saturated colors, recognizable moon and stars, and clear rectangular composition reproduce readily in books, posters and popular imagery. It has become shorthand for Van Gogh, modern art and emotional intensity—and often for the romantic image of the tormented artist. Thomson’s MoMA essay examines the painting’s wider cultural life. Its popularity owes something to its visual power, but also to museums, publishing, education and mass reproduction.
Where is the original painting now?
The original is in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York. It is not at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, although that museum holds many important works by the artist. A collection listing does not guarantee that a work will be on view on a particular date: display schedules can change because of gallery rotations, conservation or loans. Check MoMA’s collection page and current visitor information before planning a visit.
The Starry Night and Starry Night Over the Rhône
These are two different Van Gogh paintings. Without further qualification, “Starry Night” usually means the 1889 painting discussed here, now at MoMA. Starry Night Over the Rhône is an earlier nocturnal painting made in Arles in 1888. Van Gogh also painted Café Terrace at Night, another Arles scene, focused on artificial light and urban life. The Saint-Rémy work belongs to a continuing interest in nighttime effects, not an isolated experiment.

Can you buy a reproduction?
The original is held by MoMA and is not an ordinary retail purchase. Posters, prints, books and merchandise reproduce the image; they do not reproduce the original canvas’s physical surface, dimensions or impasto. If you want a print, official museum shops offer distinct options: MoMA lists a poster and a book about the painting; the National Gallery of Art Shop lists an 11 × 14-inch print; and The Met offers a custom-print service.
