Short answer: The U.S. Department of Defense reportedly tested a prototype called Bullfrog at a 2024 Technology Readiness Experimentation (T-REX) event. Developed by Allen Control Systems, it combines a vehicle-mounted turret, sensors, computer vision and AI-assisted aiming with a 7.62-mm M240 machine gun to engage small drones.

That does not mean the United States has deployed a robot soldier or fielded a gun that independently chooses human targets. Reporting indicates that a human still had to authorize firing during the demonstrated configuration. Allen Control Systems says the system is technically capable of fully autonomous operation, but no public evidence in the available reporting establishes military adoption, large-scale procurement or combat deployment.

What is Bullfrog?

Bullfrog is a counter-unmanned aircraft system, or C-UAS, developed by defense contractor Allen Control Systems (ACS). The reported demonstration used:

  • a 7.62-mm M240 machine gun;
  • a rotating, reportedly vehicle-mounted turret;
  • electro-optical sensors;
  • computer-vision software; and
  • AI-based target tracking and fire-control functions.

The weapon and caliber details come from secondary defense reporting and should not be treated as a publicly released Pentagon technical specification. The system’s stated purpose is to defeat small drones, not to replace an ordinary infantry machine gun.

What “AI-powered” means in this case

Here, “AI-powered” refers primarily to perception, tracking and aiming. The system is intended to watch the airspace, detect a possible drone, predict its movement and point the gun quickly enough to engage a small, maneuvering target.

It is not described as a generative-AI chatbot or a general-purpose reasoning system. Public reports do not disclose its model architecture, training data, confidence thresholds, sensor-fusion methods or detailed engagement rules. ACS chief executive Steve Simoni described the engineering challenge as coordinating motors, encoders, computer vision and AI control algorithms so the turret can keep both the gun and a fast-moving drone in its sights. Futurism’s report provides the main publicly available account of those claims.

When and where was it tested?

Reporting published in November 2024 said Bullfrog was demonstrated during the Pentagon’s Technology Readiness Experimentation event, known as T-REX. The available accounts place the demonstration in August 2024.

T-REX is intended to give companies an opportunity to demonstrate prototype technologies that could eventually be considered for military use. A demonstration at such an event is not the same as passing operational tests, receiving a procurement contract or entering service.

The public material does not establish the full test schedule, range location, number of engagements, target profiles, environmental conditions or independent accuracy measurements.

How the reported system works

  1. Sense: Electro-optical sensors observe the surrounding airspace.
  2. Detect and track: Computer vision and AI-assisted software identify and follow a possible drone.
  3. Aim: Motors and encoders move the turret to keep the machine gun aligned with the target.
  4. Authorize: A human reportedly had to approve firing during the described test.
  5. Engage: The gun fires while the system continues tracking the moving aircraft.

This division of labor matters. Automating detection, tracking and aiming can make a gun faster and more accurate against a drone without giving the software authority to decide when to fire.

Is Bullfrog a fully autonomous weapon?

Based on the available evidence, the tested configuration is best described as AI-assisted or semi-automated, not a fully autonomous battlefield weapon.

Level What it means
Remote-controlled A human directly controls aiming and firing.
AI-assisted or automated Software detects or tracks targets and helps aim, while a human authorizes the shot.
Fully autonomous The system selects and engages targets without a human approving each individual firing decision.

ACS reportedly says Bullfrog is “fully autonomous-capable.” That is a manufacturer’s technical claim, not evidence that the Pentagon authorized autonomous firing or that the system has been deployed in that mode. The reported test retained a human firing authorization step.

There is also no public evidence that Bullfrog can reliably identify friend from foe, select human targets or operate without defined rules of engagement. The available reporting concerns drone detection, tracking and aiming.

Why use a machine gun against drones?

Small drones are relatively inexpensive, difficult for a human gunner to hit and increasingly useful for surveillance, targeting and carrying explosive payloads. Their low cost can create an unfavorable exchange when defenders use expensive missiles or other high-value interceptors.

A machine-gun turret offers a different approach: use existing ammunition and automated aiming to engage small aircraft at closer ranges. ACS presents Bullfrog as a potentially lower-cost alternative to some missile, laser or microwave systems. That comparison is a company position, not an independently documented lifecycle-cost analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The economics involve more than the price of a bullet. A serious comparison would include the turret, vehicle, sensors, software, ammunition, power, operators, maintenance, reload time, networking and the cost of false engagements. A gun may be cheaper per shot while still requiring substantial equipment and support.

What the demonstration appears to show

Video and secondary reporting appear to show a vehicle-mounted prototype tracking and firing at small drone targets during a controlled demonstration. That suggests automated aiming can help a conventional firearm engage targets that are difficult for a person to track manually.

It does not establish that Bullfrog is combat-ready. In particular, the public demonstration does not prove:

  • reliable performance against large drone swarms;
  • accuracy at different ranges, speeds or approach angles;
  • operation in rain, fog, smoke, dust, darkness or urban clutter;
  • resistance to jamming, spoofing, hacking or electronic warfare;
  • safe identification of hostile, friendly and civilian aircraft;
  • sustained performance after barrel heating, vibration or ammunition changes;
  • safe operation near civilians or friendly troops; or
  • successful integration with a wider air-defense network.

A promotional video can demonstrate that a prototype worked in particular filmed engagements. It cannot substitute for operational testing, safety certification, acquisition approval and deployment evidence.

What could go wrong?

Counter-drone fire-control systems face ordinary mechanical risks as well as AI-specific risks. Potential evaluation questions include:

  • Could a bird, piece of debris or civilian drone be classified as a hostile aircraft?
  • Could glare, camouflage, smoke or bad weather break the tracking loop?
  • Could the system lose a target during an abrupt maneuver?
  • What happens if communications fail, the sensor becomes unreliable or the turret jams?
  • How does the system behave when several drones arrive at once?
  • Can an adversary spoof the sensors or exploit the software?
  • Can a human operator understand why the system recommends an engagement before approving it?

These are foreseeable risks and testing requirements, not failures publicly reported during the Bullfrog demonstration.

What U.S. policy says about autonomy

The relevant public policy is Department of Defense Directive 3000.09, “Autonomy in Weapon Systems”, effective January 25, 2023.

The directive addresses autonomous and semi-autonomous weapon functions, including oversight, review, testing, reliability and safeguards intended to reduce the likelihood and consequences of unintended engagements. It is not a simple blanket ban on AI-enabled weapons, and it does not mean every system must require a human to approve every shot in every possible mission.

The applicable controls depend on the system, mission, operating environment, authorization and rules of engagement. Bullfrog’s reported human-authorization step is therefore important, but it should not be confused with a complete public description of how an eventual operational version would be controlled.

Has the U.S. military deployed Bullfrog?

There is no established evidence in the available material that Bullfrog has entered service, been purchased at scale or been deployed in combat. The strongest supported description is a contractor prototype demonstrated or evaluated during a 2024 military technology event.

That distinction is easy to lose in headlines. “The military tested an AI-powered machine gun” describes a real demonstration, but it does not mean the Pentagon adopted a lethal autonomous weapon.

The bottom line

Bullfrog is best understood as an AI-assisted counter-drone gun prototype. Its software and sensors are intended to improve detection, tracking and aiming against small unmanned aircraft. The reported test still required human authorization to fire, while ACS claims the design could support greater autonomy.

Until the Department of Defense publishes procurement, operational-test or deployment evidence, the system should be treated as an experimental technology demonstration—not a confirmed autonomous battlefield machine gun.
