Short answer: The speaker behind the “138,000 five-star reviews” headline is almost certainly the Cambridge SoundWorks OontZ Angle 3, currently listed on Amazon as the OontZ Angle 3 Gen 4 (ASIN B010OYASRG). It is a small, inexpensive Bluetooth speaker with a claimed 24-hour battery, 100-foot range, AUX input and IPX5 water resistance. That makes it suitable for showers, kitchens, travel and light outdoor use—but IPX5 does not mean the speaker can be submerged.
The old “138,000 five-star reviews” figure is not a current, verified five-star count. Amazon’s captured listing showed 4.5 out of 5 stars from 164,390 total ratings, and also displayed a “Frequently returned item” warning. The rating history suggests popularity, not guaranteed sound quality or reliability.
The speaker behind the headline
The product is made by Cambridge SoundWorks and belongs to the long-running OontZ Angle family. The current Amazon page identifies it as the OontZ Angle 3 Gen 4, a compact triangular speaker measuring 5.3 × 2.8 × 2.6 inches and weighing 9.4 ounces. It is easy to confuse with the OontZ Angle 3 Ultra, Angle 3 Pro or Angle 3XL; those models have different power, battery and water-resistance specifications.

Use the exact ASIN, B010OYASRG, when checking the listing. Amazon’s comparison material includes other OontZ products, so specifications shown nearby may not apply to the Angle 3 itself.

What happened to the “138,000 five-star reviews” claim?
Older shopping coverage described the OontZ Angle 3 as having more than 138,000 five-star ratings. That wording has been repeated in deal and commerce articles, but it should be treated as a historical, rounded claim.

A total-rating count is not the same as a five-star count. Amazon’s displayed number can change, and ratings may span variants, colors, older inventory or different generations. The current page does not establish that exactly 138,000 people gave this particular current unit five stars.
A very large rating history is useful evidence that many people have bought the product. It is not an independent sound test, durability test or guarantee that every buyer will be satisfied. Amazon also currently labels the item a “Frequently returned item,” which is important counterevidence to an entirely promotional reading.

These are listing specifications, not independent measurements. The “up to 24 hours” figure is associated with playback at approximately two-thirds volume. Louder listening, phone calls, temperature, Bluetooth conditions and battery age can reduce runtime. The 100-foot figure likewise assumes favorable conditions; walls, floors, bodies, Wi-Fi congestion and the phone’s Bluetooth hardware can shorten the usable range.
IPX5 is splash protection, not pool-proof waterproofing
The listing uses “waterproof” language, but IPX5 is the more precise technical description. IPX5 means protection against water projected by a nozzle or water jets. In everyday terms, that is appropriate for:
- Shower spray and bathroom splashes
- Light or moderate rain
- Kitchen spills and wet countertops
- Poolside listening, provided the speaker stays out of the water
It does not mean the speaker is rated for immersion. Do not drop it in a pool, bathtub, sink, lake or cooler. IPX7 and IPX8 are the ratings generally associated with temporary or continuous immersion, depending on the product’s stated conditions.

Close the charging-port cover as instructed, never charge the speaker while it is wet, and dry the exterior and port before connecting power. Chlorinated water, saltwater, soap and sand can be more damaging than ordinary rain. Water resistance can also decline after drops, cracks, worn seals or years of use. Even a direct, sustained shower jet at close range is a harsher test than ordinary splashing.
What it is likely good at
The Angle 3’s strongest case is convenience. A small speaker that pairs with a phone, runs for much of a day on a charge and accepts an AUX cable can cover a lot of ordinary situations:
- Podcasts, audiobooks and radio in a kitchen or bedroom
- Shower listening
- Dorm rooms and desks
- Travel and hotel rooms
- Small gatherings and background music
- Poolside or patio use where it will not be submerged
- Connecting an older device or car audio system through AUX
Amazon’s page claims clear stereo sound, enhanced bass, loud playback and the ability to fill an average-sized room. Those are manufacturer or seller claims, not independently verified test results. A 12-watt enclosure can sound loud for its size, but it is not a substitute for a larger party speaker. Compact cabinets also limit deep bass, and outdoor sound disperses faster than indoor sound. Spoken-word content and background music are a more realistic match than bass-heavy music at maximum volume.

Why some buyers may regret it
It is an older, simple design
The speaker offers Bluetooth and AUX, but shoppers wanting USB-C charging, an app, stereo pairing, a smart assistant or modern multi-speaker features should look elsewhere. The product’s appeal is low-cost simplicity rather than a feature-rich ecosystem.
Battery claims are maximums
“Up to 24 hours” is not a guaranteed runtime. A used unit may have a tired battery, and third-party or older inventory can vary in age and condition. If the speaker powers on but quickly dies, the likely issue is the battery or charging system—not Bluetooth pairing.

A successful pairing does not guarantee a stable connection. If dropouts occur, test another phone, move the speaker closer and remove walls or sources of interference before concluding that the unit is defective.

Warranty and seller terms matter
The captured Amazon product details showed a 30-day warranty field. Verify the current seller, return window, warranty and whether the item is new, refurbished or otherwise condition-labeled before ordering. The live price also needs checking: older articles mentioned sale prices around $25, but those are historical and should not be treated as today’s price.
Who should buy it?
- Casual listeners: You want inexpensive background audio rather than premium fidelity.
- Podcast and audiobook listeners: Clear vocals and portability matter more than sub-bass.
- Shower or kitchen users: You need splash resistance, not immersion protection.
- Travelers and dorm residents: The small footprint and AUX input are useful.
- Budget gift buyers: You are comfortable with a mature, widely sold design and will verify the exact listing.
Who should choose something else?
Skip it if you need to submerge the speaker, produce strong bass or high outdoor volume, or buy primarily because of the 138,000-review headline. Also compare newer speakers if the OontZ’s current price approaches models with IPX7 or IP67 protection, USB-C, app control, stereo pairing or a more substantial support policy. - Open the exact B010OYASRG listing and confirm it says Gen 4.
- Check the live price, seller, condition, returns and warranty on the day you buy.
- Read recent one-, two- and three-star reviews rather than relying on the headline count.
- Look for recurring reports of charging failure, battery wear, pairing problems, distortion or water damage.

Verdict
The Cambridge SoundWorks OontZ Angle 3 Gen 4 is best understood as a popular, inexpensive, compact speaker for casual listening and splash-prone places. Its claimed 24-hour battery, AUX input and small size are practical advantages. Its 12-watt output, IPX5 rating and basic feature set impose equally practical limits.
