The original StumbleUpon is still defunct. An independent project revived its one-click web-discovery idea in 2026, first as StumbleUpon.cc and later as Stumble. It is not an official relaunch by the original company or Mix, and its name, domain, and features may change.
What happened to the original StumbleUpon?
Founded in 2001, StumbleUpon helped people discover websites by selecting interests and clicking through recommended pages. After an acquisition by eBay in 2007, co-founder Garrett Camp later bought the company back. The service shut down in June 2018 and pointed users toward Mix, a separate content-discovery service built around saving and organizing material into collections. StumbleUpon’s history and contemporary coverage of its closure document that transition.
Mix remains available at mix.com. It is connected to the original transition, but it is not the 2026 Stumble revival: its emphasis is curated discovery and collections rather than repeatedly pressing one button to jump to another site.
What is the new StumbleUpon?
In June 2026, PCWorld reported on an independent project called StumbleUpon.cc. Its basic pitch is familiar: open a web page, press a discovery control, and land on another website. The project later appeared under the name Stumble at stumble.ink.

Think of it as a modern, independent homage to StumbleUpon—not the original service restored. It does not bring back the old company’s accounts, community, toolbar ecosystem, or historical recommendation database. The reported experience is a lightweight web app intended for surprise browsing, not a comprehensive search engine or a conventional infinite-scroll social feed.
Status can change quickly. The early reports and later creator updates describe different names and domains. If an old link to StumbleUpon.cc fails, use the project’s current link rather than downloading an unofficial app or extension offered elsewhere.

How to use it
- Open the project at stumble.ink, if that domain is still current and working.
- Select the main Stumble or equivalent discovery control.
- Explore the site it opens. To continue, return to the Stumble page and select the control again.
- If the current interface offers categories, likes or dislikes, bookmarks, rewind, or a personalized mode, use them to shape or revisit discovery. Availability may vary as the project changes.
The core experience was presented as anonymous and requiring no login. Later creator updates also discussed accounts and features such as bookmarks and personalization, so do not assume every feature is account-free. Check the current interface and its privacy information before creating an account or saving personal data.
Is it really random—and does it use AI?
“Random” is best understood as a description of the feeling, not a documented technical guarantee. The project has described hand-picked sites and surprise-oriented discovery, while its creator has also discussed a For You mode that learns from user behavior. A result may therefore be curated or semi-random, with personalization potentially available—not an arbitrary selection from every page on the web.

The creator has also described an AI-assisted process for evaluating submissions, while saying that operating it at scale was costly and that it was not fully active. That is the creator’s account, not an independent technical audit. It is useful to distinguish the simple, feed-free browsing experience from possible back-end ranking or moderation tools; “no conventional social feed” does not necessarily mean “no algorithms.”
Is the new Stumble safe and private?
No discovery service can guarantee that every third-party destination is safe. An unfamiliar result may be broken, misleading, aggressively ad-supported, adult, or designed to collect information. Treat each destination as a separate website and use ordinary browser-safety precautions:

- Do not download files just because a page prompts you to, and do not enter passwords or payment details on unfamiliar sites.
- Close pages with fake virus warnings, suspicious pop-ups, or requests to enable notifications.
- Keep your browser updated and its security protections enabled. If you routinely experiment with unknown sites, consider a separate browser profile.
- Parents should not assume random discovery is child-safe. Leave a result that is disturbing or inappropriate, and use a reporting control if one is available.
These are precautions for browsing the open web, not claims about a particular security certification or moderation standard. Before signing up, review the service’s current privacy terms and decide whether the features you want justify sharing any information.
Is it official? What happened with the name?
No: the 2026 project is not an official StumbleUpon or Mix relaunch. The original service closed in 2018; Mix is the service associated with that transition. The newer project independently recreates the one-click concept.

In a July 2026 announcement, the project’s creator said attorneys representing Mix Media Group had contacted the hosting provider over alleged trademark infringement, after which the project pointed users to the Stumble name and stumble.ink. This is the creator’s description of a dispute, not a court ruling. It does not establish trademark ownership, infringement, abandonment, or the likely outcome of any legal matter. The project’s branding and domain could change again, so use its current link rather than relying on old search results or screenshots.
Which alternatives are worth trying?

Reddit, Tumblr, Pinterest, and TikTok can also surface unexpected material, but they are social or algorithmic feeds, not direct substitutes for a tool designed to send you to independent websites.
What should you expect from the revival?
Try it if you want a low-commitment way to encounter unfamiliar sites, small projects, games, art, or independent writing—and you are comfortable with irrelevant or imperfect results. Prefer Mix if you want collections and more deliberate curation; try a directory such as Cloudhiker or a categorized service such as Bored Hoard if you want more control over what you see.
For now, treat the revival as an evolving web app, not a mature platform with guaranteed uptime, comprehensive moderation, a stable API, or a supported native mobile app. The creator has said a browser extension was planned, but that is not confirmation that an official extension or iOS or Android app is available. Check the project’s own current site for live features; do not install lookalike downloads from third-party pages.
