The founder of Xiaohongshu—literally “Little Red Book,” and widely called RedNote by American users—is Mao Wenchao, also known as Charlwin Mao. He is not Mao Zedong, and the available evidence does not show that he named the app as a tribute to the former Chinese leader or that Mitt Romney personally inspired it.
The more defensible explanation is narrower: reporting has linked the app’s red branding to Mao’s associations with Stanford University and Bain, the firm indirectly associated with Romney. An earlier founder interview also described “book” as a symbol of learning and discovery. The company has not published a definitive primary-source account that settles the name’s origin.
The confusing coincidence behind the name
Xiaohongshu (小红书, Xiǎohóngshū) translates literally as “Little Red Book.” Its co-founder and CEO is Mao Wenchao, who is also known publicly as Charlwin Mao. That combination—“Mao” and “Little Red Book”—made the app especially easy to connect with Mao Zedong and his famous quotation collection.

Who is Mao Wenchao?
Mao Wenchao co-founded Xiaohongshu with Qu Fang, also known as Miranda Qu, in the early 2010s. He later became the company’s CEO. Reporting and an earlier founder interview describe Mao as having studied at Stanford Graduate School of Business for an MBA from 2011 to 2013 and having professional experience connected with Bain.
That biography matters because later reports linked the app’s red identity to the founders’ associations with Stanford and Bain. It does not, however, establish that Stanford officially created, endorsed, incubated, or invested in Xiaohongshu.

What Xiaohongshu originally did
Xiaohongshu did not begin as a straightforward TikTok clone. Its initial idea was a guide for Chinese consumers shopping overseas. Travelers needed reliable information about what to buy, where to find it, and whether products were worth purchasing.

The service developed into a crowdsourced shopping and review platform. Users posted recommendations, and people who were not traveling began using those posts to discover and purchase foreign products. That behavior pushed Xiaohongshu toward social commerce, with product sourcing, warehousing, and direct-purchase functions.
Over time, the platform broadened beyond shopping into a lifestyle network covering beauty, fashion, food, travel, parenting, and everyday advice. Wired’s account of Xiaohongshu’s history describes this progression from overseas-shopping guide to a much wider social-commerce platform.
Does “Little Red Book” refer to Mao Zedong?
In English, the phrase “Little Red Book” strongly evokes Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung, the collection of Mao Zedong’s political sayings. That association is understandable, especially because Xiaohongshu’s founder is also named Mao.

There is an important linguistic distinction, though. Xiaohongshu is written 小红书, literally “little red book.” Mao Zedong’s quotation collection is generally known in Chinese as 毛主席语录, meaning “Quotations from Chairman Mao,” and is also associated with 红宝书, or “red treasure book.” The overlap is therefore especially striking in English, but the two names are not identical Chinese expressions.

The safest conclusion is not that the app definitely was, or definitely was not, named after Mao Zedong’s book. The company has not publicly provided a definitive primary-source explanation. However, the public explanations reported so far point elsewhere.
The Stanford-and-Bain explanation
The Washington Post reported that Chinese media attributed the red branding and name to associations with Stanford’s business school and Bain. Stanford is strongly associated with red branding, while Bain formed part of Mao’s professional background.
This is a reported attribution, not a confirmed official origin story. It should therefore be described as “reportedly inspired by” or “linked to” those associations—not as a settled fact that Stanford or Bain formally designed the brand.
The earlier 2016 interview adds another layer. In that account, “book” represented learning, knowledge, and discovering the unknown, while “red” was described as memorable and culturally positive. That explanation fits a consumer platform built around recommendations and discovery better than a claim that the company was created as a political statement.

Where Mitt Romney enters the story
Mitt Romney is the most recognizable public figure associated with the Bain name. Romney co-founded Bain Capital and later became a prominent American politician. That makes him an attractive shorthand in a viral headline—but it does not make him the source of Xiaohongshu’s inspiration.
The available evidence does not establish that:
- Romney personally advised Mao Wenchao;
- Romney selected or approved the Xiaohongshu name;
- Romney invested in or helped create the platform; or
- Mao modeled Xiaohongshu on Romney’s political or business career.
The defensible formulation is that reports connected the app’s branding to Stanford and Bain-related associations. Bain is the indirect link to Romney, not evidence of a direct Mao-Romney relationship.
Coverage should also avoid treating Bain & Company and Bain Capital as interchangeable. The specific corporate entity matters, and a general reference to “Bain” should not be expanded into a claim about Romney without documentation.
Why Americans started calling it RedNote
In January 2025, uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s future in the United States prompted large numbers of American users to explore Xiaohongshu. Many adopted “RedNote” as the English-facing name, bringing sudden international attention to a platform that had primarily served Chinese users.

The migration also amplified the name confusion. American users encountered a service called RedNote, learned that its Chinese name literally meant “Little Red Book,” and connected that phrase with Mao Zedong. But RedNote was not a newly created American TikTok replacement; it was the English label applied to an existing Chinese social-commerce platform operating within China’s regulatory and censorship environment.
The Washington Post reported that Xiaohongshu had more than 300 million users as of July 2024. That is a historical estimate and should not be presented as a current 2026 user count.
What the evidence actually supports

The viral claim contains a real coincidence but overstates the conclusion. Mao Wenchao co-founded Xiaohongshu, whose name literally means “Little Red Book.” Yet the best available evidence points to Stanford, Bain-related associations, and a metaphor of learning and discovery—not a proven tribute to Mao Zedong and not a direct inspiration from Mitt Romney.
