The reported password was “Louvre,” the museum’s own name. But the detail came from a French cybersecurity audit conducted in 2014. Public evidence does not show that the password was still active when thieves raided the museum on October 19, 2025, or that they used it to access the surveillance system.
What happened at the Louvre?
Thieves entered the Louvre’s Apollo Gallery on October 19, 2025, using a vehicle-mounted lift or ladder to reach the building. They broke display cases with power tools, took royal and imperial jewelry, and escaped. The stolen collection was valued at approximately €88 million, although dollar estimates vary with exchange rates and valuation methods.
The burglary was primarily a physical intrusion—not a publicly established cyberattack. That distinction matters because the password story has often been repeated as if the thieves simply guessed “Louvre,” disabled the cameras, and walked away. There is no public forensic evidence establishing that sequence.
Where did the “Louvre” password claim come from?
The claim traces back to a 2014 audit by France’s National Agency for the Security of Information Systems, or ANSSI. Later reporting based on documents obtained by Libération said the audit found “Louvre” being used as a password for part of the museum’s video-surveillance infrastructure. Some reports use “LOUVRE”; that capitalization difference does not indicate a separate credential.

A separate credential reportedly associated with surveillance equipment from the French defense and technology company Thales was “Thales.” The details were discussed in a French Senate committee hearing and should be understood as findings attributed to the older audit—not as a current Louvre-confirmed password. The Senate’s account is the key source for those reported credentials.
Was “Louvre” still the password during the 2025 robbery?
That has not been established publicly. The audit was conducted more than a decade before the burglary. The available reporting does not confirm whether the password was changed afterward, whether it remained active in 2025, or whether the specific system audited in 2014 was the same system operating during the robbery.
Nor is there public evidence that the thieves logged into the surveillance network, disabled cameras, changed permissions, or used the password to facilitate the break-in. In fact, cameras recorded at least portions of the crime. The Louvre’s president-director told a French Senate committee that the camera outside the Apollo Gallery did not cover the particular window used by the thieves. A camera failing to cover one access point is not the same as an attacker compromising the entire surveillance system.

As TechRadar noted, the age of the audit makes it unsafe to present “Louvre” as proven to be the active password on the date of the heist. ABC News’ reporting likewise separates the alleged credential from the question of how the thieves actually carried out the burglary.
The audit reportedly found more than a bad password
The password is memorable because it is so predictable, but it was reportedly only one symptom of broader weaknesses. Coverage of the ANSSI audit described outdated software and hardware, vulnerabilities affecting surveillance and access-control systems, and security software purchased around 2003.
Documents reportedly also indicated that some security-related systems still relied on technology associated with Windows Server 2003. That does not mean the entire Louvre ran that operating system, or that every museum system was compromised. The narrower conclusion is that some legacy components remained part of the security environment.

Secondary reports also said auditors were able to gain access during testing and alter permissions or surveillance-related controls. Those technical details come through reporting on the audit rather than a fully public audit document, so they should be treated as reported findings—not as proof that the burglars performed the same actions.

The password story became especially damaging because it appeared alongside official findings about the Louvre’s broader security posture.
France’s Ministry of Culture said an administrative investigation found that the risk of theft and intrusion had been underestimated over a long period. It also identified insufficient external surveillance and ordered an urgent, comprehensive review of intrusion and theft risks. The ministry’s summary called for faster modernization and immediate security measures.

The Louvre announced plans to expand perimeter video surveillance, modernize its control rooms, relocate the central control room, and incorporate cybersecurity into its security-equipment master plan. Those measures address a system, not just a password: camera placement, monitoring, response procedures, equipment lifecycle management, and protection of the networks connecting security devices.
The French Court of Auditors also criticized modernization delays and the museum’s investment priorities. One widely reported figure put the estimated security modernization plan at about €83 million, while roughly €3 million had reportedly been invested between 2018 and 2024. The €83 million figure was an estimate, and the €3 million figure refers to reported spending during that period—not a complete measure of every security expense.

Why the password still matters
Even if the thieves never touched the museum’s computer network, a password such as “Louvre” would represent a serious security failure. Surveillance systems, alarms, access controls, communications, and incident logs are part of a connected cyber-physical environment. Weak authentication can make expensive equipment easier to misuse, while unpatched systems can complicate monitoring and response.
The lesson is not that one embarrassing password caused an €88 million theft. It is that physical security depends on routine technical disciplines:
- Strong, unique credentials: Passwords should not be predictable, shared, or based on an institution’s name.
- Lifecycle management: Hardware and operating systems need replacement or isolation when vendors no longer support them.
- Network segmentation: Cameras, alarms, access controls, and administrative systems should not all rely on one flat network.
- Independent testing: Audits need to be repeated, tracked, and tied to accountable remediation.
- Complete coverage and response: A camera that records an event is not enough if critical approaches are outside its field of view or alerts are not acted on quickly.
The bottom line
A 2014 ANSSI audit reportedly found “Louvre” being used as a surveillance-system password, with “Thales” cited as another related credential. That is an extraordinary example of weak security hygiene, but it is not proof that the password remained active during the October 2025 burglary or that the jewel thieves exploited it.
The defensible story is broader: the old password exposed a vulnerability, while later official investigations identified delayed modernization, inadequate external surveillance, and wider weaknesses in the museum’s physical and technical security. The joke is about the password. The serious issue is the system that allowed such weaknesses to persist.
